The first time I was at Knoxville Dick Gaines won in Carl Kinser's car. Some one told me the car was called "OLD YELLER". Is my memory correct and what year was it?
What year did Steve first win?
When did they quit staying in the barns and playing cards?
Some time in the 90's during the 360's there was a rain out and there were quite a few car pitted back in the barns. What year was this?
Is Steve gonna make the featue tonight?
Thanks for all the nice replies.

Dick Gaines won Knoxville in 1974. It was a really close race with Jan Opperman. I think Gaines was driving the number 11 for Carl Kinser . I was very young cant remember forsure. Steve won his 1st nationals in 1979.

1974 - Gaines car was red and white...
1980 - Steve's first win with Karl and Trostle
They quit in late '70's
360's in the barns - 1999
Is Steve going to make the feature tonight? Is he? LOL

Seems like the various barn thing sort of ended around 1974-75. I remember the first large enclosed trailer I can remember at the Nationals was the Seibert Olds Car #9 that Eddie Leavitt drove which may have been 1976. If I remember right enclosed trailers and motor homes started to happen, thus ending the barn shop and events. Plus with more hotels in the surrounding area (Des Moines) happened also. There may have been a few other enclosed trailers but they were relatively small and looked like a shed on wheels.
It was cool when teams were in the barn. There was an Arizona Barn right behind the grandstands.
You could walk through the barns visit with drivers, mechanics and owners It was a huge deal then to change an engine at the track. I remember a few aquaintances I met "in the barns" that later raced at Indianapolis or attempted it.
The Barns were very memorable on nights that rain delays occured. I remember some people kept their cars covered like a major secret was being with held under the tarp.
It would be a great thing to bring back from a fan support point of view and a great place for the teams to sell t-shirts and like items.

Ron Shuman won the Nationals in 1979 driving for Gary Stanton in the famous Pizza Hut white / powder blue #75. Son Casey was born about 11 days prior to the victory. Hell of a couple of weeks for the Flyin' Shoe!

Opperman was in the 4x and Gaines in that long tailed Mitchell chassis that Karl wrenched, did Dizz Wilson own it then?
If memory serves me it was a last lap pass a drag race off the 4th turn.
I remember Op saying that his right rear clipped an uneven section of the old steel plating and slowed his momentum.
A classic duel....

The car was #71 and Knoxville's website shows Karl Kinder as the owner.

Back in the early 70s Karl Kinser had 2 race cars a white #11 and a yellow #22 that he ran .Dick gaines drove #11 most of the time . He had a few different drivers in the yellow 22 some of the ones i can remember was Butch Wilkerson,Ray Kenens i know that a lot of other drivers was in these cars so if you can remember list them if you can . The race cars was sponsored by Mike Smith Indy speed shop Mike was the father of Danny .
