The u joint bolts directly to the end of the crankshaft, the shaft of the u joint is splined,a spring and the driveshaft slide into the ujoint splines and the other splined end goes in the rearend .What you see in a completed sprint car is not the driveshaft it is the torque tube,it surrounds the driveshaft, one end bolts to the motorplate and the other to the rearend.Get youself a Speedway motors sprint car catalog so you can get a visual on what the parts look like

Wait I thought aluminum magnets were outlawed a few years back. And be sure your rubber band is a good year brand... And te yellow lettering is clearly visible. Part of the sponsorship agreements.

Dont tell anybody but most use Hoosier bands and then stencil the goodyear logo on them-you didn't hear that from me though.

It figures that I'd get one helpful comment and about four smart ass comments. All I was looking for was some help and a good pointing of a general directions. I bet sprint racing is probably just like motocross racing. When I was just starting out I had little help and almost got pushed away from the sport because I was afraid to get made fun of by all the fast guys out there who had been riding for years. Thanks to the four posts about complete bullshit you helped quite a bit.......maturity must be high up here

Aluminum u-joints are an accident waiting to happen. Kind of hard to drive one with 1 leg!!!
Is the weight savings really worth all that?

Here is what will help you more than a board of arm chair crew chiefs.
go to a local race. buy a tshirt from a local driver. start chatting him up. tell him you are interested in starting out. ask him if you can come by his shop or offer to help him wash his car. give him your number.
better yet just stop by the local car wash and help scrub some mud next time you see a racer there.
racers are as a whole very friendly and willing to offer any answers you might have.
and finally find yourself a copy Sprint Car Chassis Technology - By Steve Smith & Jimmy Sills. This will get you alot more info than asking a board full of Joe Q. Racefan, who defines stagger by the number of beers they had between the heats and the B main.
also, as stated above, the U-joint is not something you want to "save weight" on. in fact I personally wouldnt even go the "used" route. even for a 305. your ankles are worth alot more than what you would save. and the same goes for the drive shaft. a couple of ounces isnt worth crutches!!!
