The forcast is a little wet for tonight. Do they typically run these shows late or will they have a day qualifier? This is my 8th trip to the nationals and I don't remember ever seing a qualifing night ran in the day.

I've seen them finish a qualifying show during the day (features only) but I don't think that they've run a complete qualifying program during the day for many many years.
Seems to me like sometime in the 80's there was a time that the whole week nearly rained out and they raced during the day on Sat and Sun, hopefully some of the older guys will chime in.
For years the standard procedure has been if Wed or Thurs rains out Fri gets bumped to Sat afternoon so Fri is used for a qualifying night.

I've been there until 3 am due to rain and I've seen them run Friday/Saturday/Sunday afternoon.
I think it is a judgment call each time rain spoils the fun....how far into the program, what nights are already in the books, weather forecast for the rest of the week, etc will play a factor.
Yes, more than once in the late 80's rain forced the program scheduled for Friday night to be run Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I believe the emphasis is getting Weds/Thurs in the books before Saturday night so that the final can be run on time....even if that means postponing the Friday NQ night show until after the A main.

Not that I want to see it, but I'll be curious how any rainouts on qualifying nights are handled now with the new Friday night format. In the past they could completely skip the Friday night show and line everything on Saturday up by points if necessary. Now the format ties Friday's A-Main directly to Saturday's A-Main so that's not such an easy option. Of course, they cancelled the Scrambles in 2010 so I suppose anything can be done.

With this being Toby's first year who knows what the game plan will be for rain...but I'd be willing to bet it's going to be a late night if rain is involved.

I think in 2009 the was a heavy rain at about 7 pm on wed qualifying night and they sang the national anthem at about midnight and finished around 3.

Whatever it takes, day racing is no fun for anyone involved, fan or racer....

I've seen them race as early as 10:00 am and start hot laps after midnight. As a kid, in the early seventies, I can remember sitting the sale barn parking lot (now the Hy Vee parking lot) until well after midnight listening for engines to fire, then heading for the stands. One year, I'm guessing in the late 80's, some of our group weren't able to come until Friday and they got to see the whole 4 day show. They'll get the program ran one way or another.

We are all here for the week for racing so it doesn't matter when they start it. I don't mind starting late.

A big shoutout to the guy that came on here bragging about the forecast a little too early. Come on man, you gotta know you don't mess with jinxing things like that!!!
I'm with you thowell, I am there to watch races. If I have to stay up late, it will be well worth it.... after all, with no work in the morning....I can just sleep in the next day!

I don't know if it's me you are talking about, but i still feel confident that tonight's race will be run in its entirety. Like the previous posters said, I remember midnight national anthems and 3:00-4:00 am finish times. All forecasts are agreeing on passing showers tonight. While totally possible, I would doubt a complete washout. Looks like if they are on their game, they can get going before any rain would fall and may have a delay due to rain. (will be bad, bad, bad racing though-likely 1 groove track) If it does get washed out, I apologize for changing the weather by "jinxing it".

I always found the weather to add a touch of excitement and or anticipation to the evenings festivities. One year I even redeemed a 50/50 ticket while sirens were going off and the stands were being cleared. Being part of a hotel crowd returning from the previous night's race at 5:00 a.m. was a hoot in itself!

Its all good, I was just joking around. Its hard to portray that online, so I apologize! The weather will do whatever it wants, we just pray it cooperates with our addiction know as the knoxville nationals! :-D

Its 3pm and I just arrived in Pella. There is a monster just to the west of DSM. I am betting it hits Knoxville around 5 pm. Looking like a long night.

It's coming I'm afraid, and it's ugly. Pouring in central DM with 70 mph wind gusts. My son is south of DM in Norwalk and says they have the same there.
Tornado sirens are now going off. Going to have to go to the porch and see what's going on.
Updaty - Got .8" of rain between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. at our place and it's still raining softly.
If it would just rain and immediately move over the track and be done, I would think they would get the show in tonight.

Ugly is right. Too bad, thanks for the update. Think I'll hold off buying the PPV for now!
