Sonny can usually be found with his son Chris racing a Late Model.

I remember them both well. I've typed Sonny's name hundreds of times doing Knoxville Results lately. I'm in the early 80s moving back today. I'll put up the 1985 season on www.knoxvilleraceway.com this afternoon. That season, Smyser spent time in the Robuck 12R...Enjoy!

I think Sonny was running at Knoxville in the late 70's when I had this car down there.
It was Wolfgang's first ride there....at the '75 opener. Dick Morris owned it and I bought it from him about 2 weeks later.

SJFast, yes Sonny would have been there in the late '70s. Was that car numbered 49 for the opener?

I have never seen Sonny drive but have known him for many yrs and he is one of the nicest racers you will ever meet. His son is a great man and racer also.

Doug did well that night. He ran third in the 'A' behind the winner, Edd French from Texas, and Ray Lee Goodwin in Speedy Bill's car. Not bad for his first time ever at Knoxville.

Hey, thanks for this topic as it is nice to just sit back and read stories about some of the older drivers and the talk about the past. Something for good reading on this cold, snowy Oklahoma afternoon.

I love learning as much sprint history as possible. Can only listen to 3 or 4 old guys stories so many times. need more new ones.

Well I know for a fact that Sonny Smyser is now Reverend Sonny Smyser. He is some sort of paster at a church in Lancaster, Missouri.
How's that for an update!? Good guy, and his son Chris is a good racer as well.
Here's one I want to know about. a guy with the last name McClure from Cincinnati, Iowa. I have always been told that he actually climbed up the flag stand and tried to beat up Doug Clark??
Anyone heard that one???

Danny Lasoski climbed the flag stand once around a track in MO. He was in the 5 car. Got sent to the back during the A main for doing something tons of guys were doing all night. Stopped the car on the front stretch and climbed the fence with his wheel in hand. Took last place and won the race cause he was so pissed off.

slow_sprinter, you speak of Rick McClure of Cincinnati, who drove the pink 25, and towed it with a pink bus.

Rick...that's it!!
But did he climb the stand...I heard he was banned from the track?!?
He resurfaced a couple years back with a 305 winged car. Took the wing off one night and almost broke his neck. He totaled the car and I think called it quits again.

It would be tough to climb the flagstand, he may have climbed the fence to the flagstand, that I don't remember that off the top of my head, but Doug would. My last record of Rick was 10th in the 1993 360 Nationals B, not a place where he would have climbed the flagstand and got banned for life...
On a related note, Greg Wooley was banned for one full year for contact with officials in the 1985 Nationals...no lifetime bans that I know of...

I remember the Greg Wooley incident. If I remember right it stemmed from him getting to staging late and not being allowed to start the feature.
Another driver had the same issue with officials the previous night....he was a rookie at the Nat's that year and has apparently retired. Anyone else remember who?
