A big thank you to Bud Hunnicutt for gifting me his wonderful book Up On The Wheel a great history on racing in and around the Kansas City area in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Many, many stories that while I hadn't known the drivers all put a smile on my face as a lifelong racefan also a ton of photos to boot which was a real bonus for me. A first hand recollection from a man who drove for years and then worked as an official for many more and has been around Hoseheads for probably a decade also. Many Hosers would have met Bud and his lovely better half 'Keet' through their travels around racetracks all over the country and I doubt anyone has ever had a negative word about these two special folks.

If you grew up around the KC area during those years it would be a treasure to have and even moreso if you had a Father who was a big racefan back in the good ol' days. I'm guessing there are some still available and by contacting them through this forum could likely be obtained.

Thanks again Bud......

I bought this book last year and loved every page. Having grown up around Olympic, Lakeside & Riverside stadiums (2 early trips to Knoxville for the Nat'ls), Bud's writing really brought some perspective to many of the legends of the day: the Weld brothers, Tiger Bob Williams, Jud Larson, Gordon Woolley - the list is a long one. Very highly recommended....

Hmmm, I need to find a copy of this. Sounds like a great read. I started going to the super modified and sprint car races with my parents in the mid 60's. We were more central Missouri (Marshall, Sedalia, Jeff City) but did make an occasional trip to Olympic, Riverside, and Lakeside, and, of course, Knoxville for the Narionals.

Missouri Sprint Fan,

I know this sounds like a hustle but there is only one case of 13 left of the third printing and Bud will be glad to mail you one.Just call him at 816-331-2220 .Since it has now been 4 years we figure that it has reached most of the people that it would appeal to so we don't anticipate printing any more.

Dear MSPN,Thank you for the kind words about "UP ON THE WHEEL".

When he heard from Bob Williams,Junior Hower,Gordon Wooley and the Weld family it almost made for enough material for another book but suffice it to say that "UP ON THE WHEEL" was the last word on Kansas City Auto Racing from Bud.We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.

Those were the days of the best racing I have even seen. I wish there was more video from that time. Remember the rivalry between the Kansas City drivers ( Junior Hower, the Williams, and the Welds) and the central Mo. drivers ( Russel and Roy Hibbard, Ken Taylor, And Walter Sorrels). I don't mean to leave out all the other great drivers, there were so many from Kansas City and central Mo.

I too grew up in KC and attended all the tracks. Even went to Sedalia on Memorial day for three years in a row in the early 60's. One car I specifically remember was a straight 8 Hudson powered super. The drivers name was Virgil ???? can someone help me with the last name. I have to have that book so I will call the number and hope I can get one.

The name you are searching for is Virgil Chapman and his image and Bud's adorn the front cover of "UP IN THE WHEEL".Both drove Hudson powered machines at different points of their careers and both are featured in the book.

Bud will be returning your call in the morning as we returned from the races at Lakeside too late to call tonight. Thanks and talk to you soon.Keet

Kirk and I did a show a few years ago called "Legends of the Midwest". Click on the link below to watch Bud Hunnicut talk about his book on that show.

WOW ! If it wasn't for friends like the "Racin Boys",Bob Baker of the Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Richard Smith of "R&S Diecast "in Belton, this book could never have reached as many people as it has, but here we are selling out the last of the third printing and it's all due to these kinds of racefans.Don't want to forget the guy that really made it all possible because we relied on his skills and knowledge of the computer plus the wonderful work that he put in on the photos..

MIKE CARAWAY !

Knowing nothing about marketing we kind of fumbled our way through but it has been so gratifying to hear the responses from the different fans.

Thanks again to the kind words from Chris Econamaki,Dave Argabright,Bob Mays and Mike Nelligan we have come to the place where we can finish our career as book sellers and just rest on the laurels of a"mouthy kid with a lot of stories." Thank you to you all.....and you know who are.

I would imagine the Parnelli Jones book with Bones Bourcier will be worth checking out. It'll have to wait for 2013, as I already have too many good racing books to buy this year! (Argabright's fiction for my dad, 100 years of Winchester, and the Old School books).

Anything Bones writes is worth checking out. I've been reading his stuff since he wrote for New England Speedway Scene, when I was a teenager.
