Im surprised Tony Stewart hasnt entered it. I can't believe with as many races as he's run this year he would sit this one out
More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the
cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years
to come. Only the most average talent behind the
wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on
the track!

Does anyone know if Robert Bell plans to run nationals? I saw his name in the results a few times this summer. Would be terrific to see him back at the nationals.

Looks like they put just about every Posse car Thursday. Likely out of respect for travel. Looks like more top WoO hitters are Wednesday. Knoxville Regs split pretty equal both nights. Thursday looks like tougher night from a depth standpoint so points will be harder. My guess is that of the top 16 locked into Saturday A will be 9 from Wednesday, 7 from Thursday.
Wednesday Locks: Dollansky, Saldana, S. Kinser, Schatz, K. Madsen, Heskin, Stewart, Henderson, I. Madsen
Thursday Locks: Swindell, Lasoski, Dobmeier, Brown, McCarl, Zomer, Maeschen

I would pick Sweet, Larson, McMahan, A. McCarl, and Jeffrey over Henderson on Wednesday..Also, on Thursday I would pick Shaffer, Kinser, Meyers, Pittman, W. Johnson, J. Johnson. over Lasoski, McCarl, and Dobmeier...but it is who stays out of trouble! I just don't see how if you can't win on a weekly night at Knoxville, you expect some of these guys to make the A of Nationals. Dobmeier surprised me last year and I loved it...however, I haven't seen much this year. McCarl just isn't fast enough. Zomer usually qualifies well, but I dont see this as his year. Maeschen has been crazy fast the last two weeks, so I think he makes it.
Here is my 16
Wednesday Night: Schatz, Dollansky, Stewart, K. Madsen, Saldana, Heskin, S. Kinser, Sweet, Larson
Thursday Night: Swindell, Brown, W. Johnson, Maeschen, K. Kinser, Meyers, Shaffer
Walker, Pittman, and Darrah could out point Sweet, Larson, and Maeschen...I just went with who I would like to see the most. I also see Sheldon Haud running very well and securing a spot on Friday.
I love this time of year. Can't wait to see who surprises, and who gets caught up in a crash to shake things up.

Dont sleep on Cap Henry last year was his first time at the track and got better on Friday night and he has also look very good lately. He also has been qualifying well which is major major help. Qualify well keep your nose clean in the heat start up front in the B if you dont pass anyone start in the middle of the A and BOOM! Locked into Saturday night.

If you don't pass anyone in your prelim A, I don't think you'll be locked into the A on Saturday night.
With only 16 spots up for grabs on prelim nights, I think you have to run top 10 minimum on your Prelim night (in addition to a good time trial and heat race) to have a chance at the top 16 in points.
Cap did look good last year, I wouldn't count out Danny Holtgraver or Bryan Sebetto either, they both run good IMO.

I'm sure the drivers wished it was that easy!! You don't start 11th in the A if you transfer from the B... that is WoO rules, not Knoxville Nationals rules. You tag the tail of the heat transfers at the Nationals, so better get your elbows up!
Madsen & McMahan started 15th and 16th in the A on Sat last year and both had similar paths on their qual night. Madsen timed in 7th, McMahan 5th. They both struggled in their heats, finishing 7th (started 7th and 8th). They both started near the front of the B and transferred out -- allowing them to start at the back of the A (Kerry 23rd, Paul 21st). Madsen charged to 11th and McMahan up to 14th.
The inverse of that is to struggle in qualifying (ie, Davey Heskin in '10 - timed in 19th) .. but transfer out of your heat (Heskin started 5th, ran 3rd) .. get a little lucky with a ton of the fast timers NOT making the A .. start up front in the feature, and finish up front (Heskin started 4th and finished 4th).

I've read the format on K-ville website, but don't quite get it... Will Friday be for points, or do just A-Main top 4 winners qualify? How do they fill B, C, D Mains Saturday?

The top 16 in pts from Wed/Thurs are locked into the A on Sat - that's the easy part. I believe the next 10 cars in pts (17th - 26th) have the option of keeping their spot in the top 5 rows of the B Main Sat -- or coming back on Fri in attempt to grab one of the final 4 spots in the Sat A-Main (given to the top 4 finishers in the Fri A-Main). If all or some of those 10 cars want to come back Friday to try to get into the A Main, I think they ask the next 10 (or however many to get to 10) in pts if they want to fill the top 10 spots in the B-Main... on down the line until someone agrees to that. I think they have to make that decision after the races on Thurs night (can't sleep on it). For everybody that 'takes a mulligan' and runs Friday, there will be 1-lap qualifying that sets up heats, B-features, and the A-main. The top 4 in the A-Main are spots 17-20 in the Sat A-Main, and it's my understanding that everybody after that will be slotted into the B, C, D, E based on how you finished in the A on Friday, and Friday B-Mains -- with 5th place in the A-Main on Friday night starting 11th in the B-Main on Sat. If I'm wrong Bill W, point me in the right direction!

Stewart has long said he is not ready to race in the Nationals. Plus his NASCAR obligations keep him very busy and the Sprint Cup race that weekend is in Pocono. He's lucky he gets here 1 or 2 nights to see Schatz and Kinser drive. Would love to see it someday!

Thanks, Chilly. I was confused last year too but it eventually made sense by Saturday! Only one more question (for now)... from your explanation it sounds like the points everybody except top 16 earned on Wed & Th. don't mean anything... is that true?

Yes and No.... top 16 are the most important 'cause they're locked in, no questions asked. The next 10 in pts are important too though 'cause they can decide not to take a chance at blowing a motor/rear end or crashing on Friday and be locked into the top 5 rows in the B-Main Saturday. Some of them (17th - 26th in pts) may decide its worth the gamble though to race on Friday... and you may be 30th or something in points and have the opportunity to be locked in the front of the B-Main (and not race on Friday). At the end of the day on Thursday, 26 cars aren't racing on Friday...... to everybody else, Wed/Thurs meant absolutely nothing and they're going to be running their a$$ off to get those top 4 spots in the Friday A-Main. It's the difference between starting at the back of the A-Main ($9,500 to start) or mid-pack in what is always a very tough B-Main.

What if you are in that next 10 in points and you race Friday but run like crap where do you line up Saturday?

As previously noted.... if you finish 5th in the A on Friday, you line up 11th in the B on Saturday... and on back. It looks like 14th in the A on Friday would slot you into the last spot in the B Saturday (20th). If you finish dead last in the A on Friday (24th), that would line you up 10th in the C on Saturday. If you don't make the A on Friday, the best you could start was 11th in the C on Saturday. If you wad it up in your heat race on Friday, you're probably looking at the D or E Main on Saturday. It's risk vs. reward.... is it worth the risk to have a spot in the A Main?? Friday is awesome now for a top dog that blows a motor in their heat on Wed/Thurs or wads it up (like Kemenah last year). It allows them to start from scratch and still have a shot at making the A Main, or at least running somewhere in the B. Under the old premise, the best you could start on Saturday was middle of the C (if you won the Friday night feature).
