OK, so I'm a rookie headed to Knoxville in a couple of weeks. Where do I need to go eat while there?
I'm thinking I will actually do a piece on this for our website on food: www.FoodAroundTheTrack.com . So all you Knoxville regulars, where and what are my best options out there?

1. Casa Grande for Mexican (great food and service)
2. Wackos (good pizza and lots of other things)
3. Rib Shack for BBQ (close to track, good food)
4. Swamp Fox (good burgers, lots of other things)
5. Deng's Garden (really good Chinese food)
6. Rick's Sports Dinner (good burgers, haven't tried anything else there)
7. Tasos (good variety)
I would recommend any of these local restaurants, this is probably my order of preference. They're all good. We also have the usual national fast food chains.

I'd go with the following:
Lunch/Dinner
Northcote Meats Tenderloin or Brisket sandwich (they are located in the HyVee parking lot) - local from Melcher Dallas, but set up their stand in K'ville for the Nationals
Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant
Swamp Fox
Fast Freddie's Pizza (take out only, located just off the square)
Wacko's
Down Under Grille (just opened yesterday beside Dingus, sounds like it could be good)
Deng's Garden
Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Rick's Sports Diner (probably doesn't serve dinner, I think he's a Breakfast/Lunch only place)
Mr. C's
Before/after the races adult beverages
Peace Tree Brewing Company Taproom
Dingus
Sandal's Lounge

Postman, Checkerboard in Pleasantville, if in the Des Moines area--try the Drake Diner. With the busy schedule you'll have I suggest you grab a pizza at the Casey's General Store across the street from the Sprint Car Hall of Fame and top it off with a piece of home made pie with ice cream from the Rotary Club tent which is normally on the grounds of the HoF. Looking forward to seeing you in Kville.

I have to go with a one of Vandy's suggestions. The Northcote Meats tenderloins are delicious. Same ones that Mr C's north of the track serve as well, only the church has a stand just north of Dingus set up during nationals. The wait may be 20 mins but well worth the wait. The track concessions sell these same tenderloin Big Foots, only a smaller version.
Never really had any bad food from any of the temporary vendors. The pork producers used to be just behind Dingus, but was thinking they were not there in 2011.

For what it's worth, I'm a chef in Milwaukee. when I went, we mostly grilled at our campsite. The HyVee across the street from the track gets their beef from the Amana colonies (Google them) & it was amazing. We ate various cuts of steak for 3 days straight. I was very impressed. Other than that, I tried the BBQ place next to the HOF one day & really enjoyed that as well.

Great advice by all. All the local restaurants, vendors, and track food are great, but these are the more daytime, "gourmet" choices. Lol. In case you keep some late hours at the track, dingus', or nearby campground parties, and are looking for something to soak up the festive juices, you have to try the corndogs at the corner of Rock Island & McKinley and the Hy Vee cafeteria breakfast. A trip to the Nationals just isn't the same without a 3 - 6 am Hy Vee breakfast.

If you have some time one day, take a drive 20 miles south of Knoxville on 14 and you will see a turn off for a town called Williamson. There is basically nothing there except a small tavern. This tavern sells a 16 oz. hamburger called the Papa Burger, it is delicious and will definitely fill you up.

I have always heard about that place, but have never made it down there. They're supposed to, or used to, have a giant tenderloin, too. Is this the same tenderloin as the Northcote Meats?

Everything is always just personal preference. We live here in Knoxville and have tried most everything worth trying in a 50 mile radius. As far as Chinese, we prefer the buffet on the square and the sit down, order across the square is quite good also. As far as Mexican, I have to say it, the one in Pella is the best in the entire area, hands down. That from one who spent 39 years in Arizona and have tried them all. Just never really cared for the one in Knoxville. VFW and Wackos both have gizzerds if you like them. Also on the square, the Coffee Connection is excellent for early in the a.m. and lunch. VFW is also great for burgers and the chicken. The Rib Shack is the best of the BBQ joints in the area. Swamp Fox, Tasos, Mr.C's and Ricks are all excellent for the American way as is Checkerboard in Pleasantville. As far a specials during the Nationals, as mentioned, The Beef Producers right as you come into the track, the Pork Producers behind Dingus, the HyVee and Northcottes and the BBQ wagon in the parking lot of HVee. Don't care much for the walking taco truck, but that's just my opinion. I don't think they were mentioned, but the pie and ice cream on the East end of the Hall of Fame, the pancake breakfast at the Armory, and the pancakes and bisquits and gravey at the Marion County Park. Sorry for the spelling errors but I hope this helps your decisions.

she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss

A great place in Knoxville is Hometown deli. In Attica, Kinfolks BBQ. In Pella, Van Develds home-made bologna rings

Alright listen up. The food is one of my favorite parts of nationals. All these suggestions are dead on, but they all missed the best one. Just between the race track and the railroad tracks right on hwy 14 there is a big tent. This is Captains BBQ. Im telling you right now that if you come to Knoxville and dont eat there at least 3 times you have wasted your trip. This food is absolutely amazing. He is a guy from right here in Knoxville. If you have the brisket and baked beans, all these other suggestions won't matter cuz you will keep coming back to see the Captain. I'll be the one moaning cuz I ate myself sick, hope to see ya there.

The Down Under Grill just opened. Its next to Dingus in the old Conoco building. I ate there yesterday, it was great. They are supposed to be open 24 hours during Nationals, including breakfast.

I'm going to stop in the next day or two. What's on the menu? Did someone say they have a lunch buffet or something? Hopefully they aren't serving Vegemite! ha ha.

Thanks. I have two Aussies staying with me again this year. I'll have to bring them in.
