Interview with Luke Cranston. The motor in the video was their back up. They set up to run the cushion, as straight as possible. Notice how little movement there is in the steering, in the video.

J D Johnston, in the same race as Cranston, running the lower part of the track. Lots more steering and close racing. Sounds like he was twisting his motor even tighter.
