I know we tossed this around quirte a bit last weekend while racing in SC with some stock car teams. The rules for the RaceSaver deal are pretty similar across the board and we ended up at around $10-$12k depending on parts availability and such. Your return on your investment is another huge savings as you will not need to be buying 2 or 3 new tires a night or having to freshen your motor NEAR as often. Ours are sealed so very easy to enforce.
In talking with some of the lower stock car classes, some of those guys have more than that tied up in their cars already and having to replace sheet metal and tires constantly.
As far as competativness, we ran laps in the mid to upper 17s while the "unlimited" late models timed in to show us how much slower we were. They timed in between 18 and 19 seconds. Needless to say, it turned an awful lot of heads.
Hope it helps.

You can purchase a 1-2 year old roller for about $8500 & we built our motor with a forged crank & decent rods for about $6500.

thanks for the replies I was kinda guessing that you could be racing for around 12 not bad I'd rather be in a 305 sprint than a late model regardless of laptimes

I talked to a driver out of western Ks. ealier in the year. They had their motor just built and it cost them about 9500. That was a carb set up as well.

How often on a local racing level does a person completely wreck a frame? I've wondered that for awhile as that always has seemed like one of the more expensive parts of sprint car racing as apposed to say a modified, you see alot more rolls and bad wrecks with the sprint cars tearing up the equipment, where with a modified you can use most of your equipment the entire year if not longer if the person can drive the car reasonably well.
I've heard racers say several times that a way to figure how much your going to spend is figure out what you think you'll spend and double it. Not kidding, so say here your thinking around $12,000 to put the car together, if you figure $25,000 you'll probably be in the ball park once you get all the stuff your not thinking of together, like trailer, tools, spare parts and tires. Tires are at least a couple hundred a piece and you'll want several spares and shocks are a huge deal now for setup and there around a couple hundred a piece, theres 4 on the car and most guys probably have 10 different ones on the rack in the trailer.

You can find plenty of cars for under $10,000 that are fast, and reliable. Thats what great about the racesaver engine rules. If you turn the engine like a 360 u will break something in the engine. If you keep the rpms where they are suppose to be you will be fine. bearings, rings, valve springs. Replace them over the winter before the season starts and your good. Those guys who spend $10-15,000 on the racesaver engine are the ones who ruin what is suppose to be fun and cheap

take time to buy items. do not buy old junk. There are a few 305 cars that are 20 years old. Bad idea. If you look at used items for sale and they never even cleaned part up, you will find it probably bad on inside.

You are correct and this is so true of any division.
I have always thought it was crazy to spend so much extra $$$ on something that will not match your investment but then again, that is racing.
