I've always wondered how fast they really are going because the line they run is more than a 1/2 mile?

When there are poles up trackside in the eyesight of drivers, and those poles have numbers on them corresponding to what turn it is, I would say that scenario is very very VERY FAST! In my only visit there back in the 1990's for a winged All Star Circuit of Champions event, it scared the hell out of me, as a spectator! The aforementioned poles with numbers on them are to let the drivers has some sort of way to let them know where they are on the race track. Trust me when I tell you, from my own personal observation, it is the fastest and scariest race track you could ever imagine as far as speed goes! SCAREY FAST !!!

I worked on the Beefpackers car in '96 when Paul Mcmahan drove it. I know the record's been broken a time or two since then, but we broke it at the All-Stars show that year and the announcer said the average speed was 131mph. Don't remember what the time was.

Damn fast is all I can tell you. We went last year and were very impressed. It comes up on this board often as to which track is fastest. As we all know lap times don't mean much due to diffrent size track even if they say "1/2 mile". I'm suprised no one has set up a radar gun at some of the tracks to see what the top end is. Being familiar with Knoxville , Eldora and Belleville I would guess they wouldn't be far off. Belleville is fast but never getting a straight away I would think would keep some speed scrubbed off the top end. Eldora is smaller than Knoxville but banked more so it would be interesting to see trap speeds. I know there are a couple track in PA that carry a lot of top end also. Any cops out there want to do a study for us?

Your best bet for food is the Bellevilla which is just West of Belleville on US36. Among other things they have a good ribeye steak there. There are (or I should say were) a couple of bars on the square downtown but its hard to say year to year what is still in business downtown any more. Mr. Goodcents West of town on hwy 81 is always good in a pinch. Make sure you give yourself time to hit the Higbanks Hall of Fame and Museum http://highbanks-museum.org/ and the Boyer Gallery http://kansastravel.org/boyergallery.htm both of which are not far from the racetrack.

Fast Freddie's or Bigfoot Freddie's on the square had good breakfast. Hope they keep the lights on at the track this year till the races are over.
