Just curious what people think might be the car count for the race at Salina highbanks speedway April 27th for the ASCS national race.

I have learned over the years not to guess car counts but I am going to say right around the forty range.

Either way with the show on the High Banks at Salina, with sprint cars involved, it ought to be a hell'uve a show.

I agree 40 is a good estimate, had 39 at Devil's bowl. I was hoping some cars from north and east of there might show up. Long drive, but going to make it, then back home for the Lawton Saturday show. Curious to see what the regional numbers look like.

I agree with 35-40. wouldn't be suprised if it's in the low 30's, but if some Missouri cars come down or Memphis area cars come up.....never know.

I'm very curious about the Sooner show too. There were several new cars last year. It really just depends on the Tulsa area cars. Will they go run Salina and call it a weekend? skip Salina and just run Lawton? or run both?

You know that Joe Jr. will run, Covington, Shouse, probably Martin Edwards too.. But do any other Lone Star cars come up? Estes? Byrom? Lang? Ramey? hell Ramey wasn't even at the Lone Star race at Devil's Bowl last night. so who knows - there is a Gulf South double next weekend so that might tempt the Lone Star guys to go down there. Or they might just take a weekend off.

Where and what will the McClelland's run? the Frazier's? Michelle Decker? the Butch Roberts 36 car? the Jimmy Jones ASCS car? Danny Jennings? the Barksdale's? Cameron Hagin? Will both Sellers' run Lawton? possibly Owens, Ezell - some other champ regs? John Carney came up to Devil's Bowl saturday - Lawton's not much further than DB from El Paso... This is just off the top of my head. The stage is even set for a New Mexico car or two to come out to Salina and then stop at Lawton on their way back. It has happened before.

When you consider the above and more - you can see the dynamic with a pretty wide swing of the pendulum. There was a dynamic very similar to this with a Sooner region show at Lawton last year. There was concern over what the count would be - Sooner officials discussed having the show be a Sooner vs. Lone Star event to boost a count we were worried about. Ultimately the move wasn't made - and over 35 cars showed up.

Cannot underestimate the impact of having ASCS National Tour and OCRS at Meeker the night before the Sooner show at Lawton. But looking from another angle - look at the statewide sprint car scene the past few years - this weekend is a triumph in its' own right - esp if the 3 shows get good fields. Really it's an important weekend - and could well gauge the health of statewide sprint car racing - esp in the ASCS ranks.

I think Salina will get mid-upper 30's. OCRS at Meeker around 30. Sooner at Lawton 20-25. If that happens - Sooner state sprint car enthusiasts should be thrilled.

But the worst thing that could happen this weekend is people not participate. For fans that haven't felt they've had that special race to go see - here you go. There's 3 of them spread damn near in equal distance through the state. And the teams have their pick of where and what to run - so go run.
This weekend above most - it is crucial for all fans and drivers who can make it to get out and take part and have a great time. of course I haven't looked at the forecast yet either lol.

I forgot about the NCRA race lol. that could change a lot of things.

100% on point, OKC FAN. I was looking forward to the rained out BMS show as I have not been to nearly the OCRS shows as I would have liked. The Nat runners will head east to W. Memphis,

hope some will head down the turnpike. Saw both the Barksdales ran at DB, usually see them at Lawton.

I'm ready for some racing, hope the racers and fans show, but not the weather!

just talked to the Birdman - partial list for Lawton -

Joe Bob Lee
Kacee Frazier
Jesse Frazier
Nick Lucito
Brian McClelland
John Ricketts
Martin Edwards
Matt Covington
Joe Wood Jr.
Zach Chappell
Andy Shouse
Michelle Decker
Robert Sellers
Shane Sellers
Lee Little
Brandon Hahn

Still no word on the Jimmy Jones ride that is often seen in ASCS pits. Word has Danny Jennings going to Wichita. I think Claud Estes might well make the trip up. Maybe Brandon Corn. Barry Gifford and Rick Wright ran the series' last year. Possibly Brian Roberts, Kirby Bedford, Kyle Chady, Brady Demeree, Johnathon Beason, Dale Wester, Raven Culp, Michael Lang, Robert Byrom, the Barksdale's, a few New Mexico drivers also possible. You can look at last year's points and those that made trips to Lawton - there really are a lot of possible entries.

If those 16 above show up for sure - I think Lawton gets a solid 22-26 cars. With some suprises - maybe get up to 30.

Jimmy Jones 110% car is no longer, Jimmy is now Dustin Morgan Crew Chief full time and Cameron Hagin is running non wing stuff with AJ Felker Racing in the midwest in both Midgets and Sprints.

I think Lee Little sold all his stuff or was trying to over the winter.

add Godley, Texas' Claud Estes to join Edwards and Ricketts in leading the Texas charge. Man I still can't help but wander about Brandon Corn. Drove a hell of a race to beat almost 40 cars at Lawton last year, but I think he wadded some stuff up at a Gulf South race a few weeks' ago. Be cool to see him join the Texas teams. Same with Kevin Ramey - he's won some ASCS races at Lawton too. Still speculating on several other Texas cars as well, notably Raven Culp and Dale Wester.

Add Michael Brown to the list as well.

btw another good nugget - Blake Hahn will be running ASCS a little later into the season, currently putting it together. One gander at the couple ASCS starts the two-time ASCS2 Outlaw champ made last year - fans are gonna get a treat watching this kid come up. His first heat race at Lawton last year - first time in that car and at a track he had never run a sprint car at - just poured it on em. I think he came from 4th with 3 laps left and won it. The move by Danny Jennings, no stranger to ASCS racing at Lawton, was one of the highlights of last season. Can't remember who he trekked down, but I remember it seemed impossible for him to catch the leader - but he did it.

Can scarcely think of any young talent with a brighter future. Great kid on and off the track.

Man that 110% car took quite a ride at Lawton last year!!!

Similar to another foreseeable event a few years before it - can't remember the name or number, Jd can remember for the both of us lol - I just remember a total mishandling of turn two after the first successfully completed slider of the nameless and numberless guys career lol.
You saw the confidence rise so high in turns 3 and 4 - and just went straight to the woodshed in turns one and two...........ending in the turn two wall lol. you just KNEW he went down the front straight after the slider screamin "Whoooo Hoooo!!!!!" LOL.
I'd say it was priceless, but I'm also sure the owner would disagree lol.

It's been a slow winter for sure, not many "peppers" as you say OKCFan. I know I am stoked for this weekend. My traveling partner had to bail on me, gonna head up solo. If anyone wants to pile in a compact and keep company give me a yell and maybe we can work it out. I'll check the page or e-mail me at mountainbud1@gmail.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your GF, hope all works out for you guys. I am not totally backwards, but my only means of social media is a cell phone and an occasional e-mail. If things work out for you, I'm off work, gonna veg out around the house 'til time to head north. Shoot me an e-mail if needed, if not I'll look you up Sat at Lawton. Buddy
