I'm taking a much needed break from retirement and have agreed to a project in Stockton, Ca., to last until about December. This is an area of California that I am not very familiar with and need some feedback from those that are, to suggest tracks within a reasonable distance to attend races while I,m there. Any help is appreciated.

Roger

My condolences. Stockton is a shithole and hopefully a local will clue you in quickly as to which areas to avoid as it can mean the difference between life and death. Avoid Charter Way for starters. I was the photographer for Delta Speedway for 3 years and advice by a local likely prolonged my life. On a more positive note you are located fairly centrally to some of the best race tracks we have within an hour or two drive.

The first thing I thought, was that Roger was imposing some a kind of new age "trail of tears" on himself... In other words, I thought he might be getting senile.wink

You have ocean speedway , Antioch speedway, placerville speedway, marysville speedway , silver dollar speedway, Calistoga speedway , Merced, kings speedway, Tulare speedway, Santa Maria speedway , ventura speedway, Bakersfield speedway, Perris auto speedway, Petaluma , and I'm missing a couple up north I know . But if you don't mind driving there's racing in ca. My favorite track up that way is Tulare and down south is the PAS.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Thanks to all for the help! Especially to 1800 for the time breakdown to reach each track. And thanks for the headsup on Stockton being a shithole. I've only passed through a few times on my way to somewhere else. Stockton couldn't be as had as some other shithole's I've spent time at. How about Newark N.J., LosAngeles, South Chicago, Rock Springs, Wy, Butler, Pa...just to name a few. Oh, I almost forgot, Weirton, W. Va.

@bigfish, I assure you that if I was to reinact a new age "Trail of Tears", it wouldn't be to California, probably back to the hills of N/W Georgia and Eastern N.C., where my people came from. I'll test my senility making the trip out that way in a couple weeks....As I remember, isn't it Route 66 that takes me as far as the beach at Malibu? From there, I'll ask directions.

Mine too go back to the Carolina's Roger, but I've never followed that route from that side of my family to the end. After finding out that the other side had spent time in Pennsylvania in the 1700's before moving to Indiana, I was afraid of what I might find..LOL

I do remember, but barely, the original old route 66 because we drove it from Torrance to Indiana in our new Coffee and Cream Colored Chevy when I was eight.

All those tracks to choose from, but you know as well as I do (because you were there) that the two best out this way are gone forever.

Route 66 will take you right through my favorite place in America, Winslow AZ. If you get a few extra minutes stop in downtown (off the Interstate) and stand on a corner and think of your old Canuck friend that wishes he was there with ya' Rog.

Lots of very good racing within a few hours of you in CA, been to most of those tracks and you will enjoy. All the very best, stay in touch, Take It Easy.....

Bigfish, I have a sililiar photo that I shot and sold (2 different angles) a few thousand of over the years. Almost had a deal with the Winslow people to sell it through their gift shop but there were two many chiefs I had to pay to make it happen and I walked. Those bricks in the photo can be purchased for $250 and there are some interesting reads there, Take It Easy....
