Port City is the exception, not the norm.
That show was built upon an outpouring of Tulsa area teams. None of the teams from North Texas came up, and very few from the OKC area. Tulsa has become the largest mini sprint hub in the nation. If you think that was a huge count - consider that there were at least 12-15 Tulsa teams that didn't run. probably more.
And PCR gets that sort of turnout for the same reason most of the bigger tracks don't. They have a hell of a track. Many outside of the 918 don't want to run it, fear it, afraid to tear stuff up. because it's actually wheel to wheel racing. But the best talents in the region all race there, because you have to actually race. there is nearly always two grooves, sometimes more. it takes a lot of balls to really race there, esp as tight as the track is coming out of turns 2 and 4.
It is the #1 track in the state right now by a few galaxies. The place has an undeniable atmosphere. The same sort of atmosphere State Fair Speedway had - that you actually know that the odds are extremely high that the race will be fantastic. It actually means something to win there. it means a lot. hell, it means a lot to just run well.
Last saturday was the 30th time we made the 5 hour round trip - and 26 of those 30 were of a quality that is unmatched anywhere in the area. the 4 that weren't - 3 of them had makeup races from the week before - not to mention the 130 car show they still had to run - and those shows were still good - the track just went away at the end.
I don't know what in the world PCR plans to do with the Relay 4 Life/Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial. Those pits were packed last weekend - and there will be a lot more teams for that show in September. Not to mention the parking lot was so overloaded that people were parking in the adjacent businesses - and the stands, while full, still had some room.
There WILL be more teams than the current pit area can handle, there WILL be more people than the place seats, and there WILL be a nightmare in the parking lot. Hopefully it is planned well. It will have to be. Can't wait for that show in September.
