That video is just a little sad. As a die hard race fan it is always a little sad to see them go.

Yes it is VERY sad, I debate as to whether or not to post, tbh. But we took so many pictures and the last time I saw Tulsa Speedway it had bleachers still standing. I wish I had gotten to see be a fan in the stands there.... I'm sorry if this video is too sad

I think that the video was well done. It is just a shame, the number of tracks that are going away. We have had a couple of them shut down here in the last 5 or 6 years, and it really sucks. It is however a sign of the times. Local racing has been dying a slow death for a number of years now. With all of the entertainment options there are today and now the economy I suspect this situation will become much worse, not better. Our local track draws roughly 100 to 150 spectators a night for Midgets and the track that my daughter races at doesn't even fill up half way most of the time. It would be nice to see that trend turn around. But please keep working with the videos and the pictures. It is always nice to see someone new to the sport come in and get caught up in it this way. I will watch them! As I am sure many others will as well.

It always gets under my skin a little when people use copyright music for their video productions and slide shows. That's just my opinion as somebody who messes around with a room full of guitars and recording software and knows how much work goes into making music. Yeah, chances are that Tom Petty isn't going to surf around the internet looking for people using his music without permission but that doesn't make it right. I'm sure you're doing it in good faith but if memory serves me I think copyright law says that you can use up to a 30 second sampler without repercussions but I could be wrong on that.

I'm trying to brush up on my playing and songwriting so I can produce my own tunes for this purpose but I've still got a ways to go. http://youtu.be/6Uy8J9nNIeY

Nope, don't know that one or very many covers for that matter. I'm just an old 60 y/o blues/rock hobbyist that owns a few cheap guitars and plays around making some music once in a while. Copyright infringement is a pet peeve of mine because I see so much of that on these racing boards. In some cases I have even stumbled across slide shows that had some of my photos in them. My stuff might not be the best, I don't make that claim, but there's no infringement involved with any of it.

The YouTube rule is that a person must be legally permitted to use any copyrighted content in their video (essentially all commercial music is copyrighted). If I write a tune and create the content entirely myself, the copyright is mine, I can do what I want with it. If the content was created by someone else, I would need a license from the person who owns the copyright before I can use it in a video. Licensing copyright music for use in YouTube slide shows would be cost prohibitive. There is royalty free music available on the internet for this purpose but essentially it would be a copyright infringement for me to rip music off a CD and use it in a slide show.

People feel like they can ignore the copyright laws and use any music that they want. I see it all the time on these racing sites. That doesn't make it right just because everyone is doing it and my bringing it up will probably make me the bad guy. If respecting copyright makes me a bad guy on racing message boards so be it. Infringements are so out of control these days that people don't even realize that it's illegal and they get on my case whenever I mention it.

P.S. I'd venture a guess that even a lot of these racing videos with commercial music created by sites with paid sponsors do not have licensing to use copyright music unless they're affiliated with a radio station. Most of them aren't raking in the tens of thousands of dollars it would take to obtain licensing for the music from a dozen chassis, graphic companies and racing seat banner ads. Even bars have to pay a licensing fee if they want to hire a cover band nowadays.

I understand that Kit Kat has obtained licensing. Everything I have ever seen on the subject seems to suggest that it costs in the thousands. My daughter's fiance' is a singer in a local band and he says that the bar fee so that bands can play covers is $5,000. Evidently I was wrong on the cost and I'm waiting for a link so I can look into it myself. I've got thousands of unseen photos in my collection and it's a hassle to write and record a tune for everything.

I was thinking about making some MP3 stuff available on the creative commons and posting it on a site for download. The music is pretty time consuming and it's my winter hobby but I'm still kind of self conscious about what I'm putting out there. 45 years playing but I'm certainly not a shredder and my bluesy stuff probably doesn't appeal to the younger crowd.

I'm not going around telling on people who use music in racing videos. I don't want to see anyone get in trouble so I hope I didn't come off as a snitch or the bad guy.

Is it correct to ask permission from the song holder to use their work for anything? Sure

Is jaywalking a ticketable offense if you dont walk from the corner of the intersection. Sure

If you sell a race ticket for profit are you "supposed" to report your "earnings" to the IRS? Sure

Was the song used for profit? No

Was the song used to take a stance on religion? No

Was the song used to take a stance on abortion? No

Was the song used to take a stance on politics? No

Is the song holder going to lose revenue because someone added it to a racing video on a message board? Hell No

You going to publicly tell kids who use songs on their school projects they may be doing a illegal act?

You really need to lighten up dude.

Stan, listened to a couple of your videos and really like what I hear. I can certainly see them as background music on a racing video!

Didn't know you were a musician as well as a photographer and reporter/columnist. Hopefully I'll run into you at the track one of these days (most likely Cedar Lake when the sprints are there), although I probably wouldn't recognize you without an introduction (maybe at the Tatnall trailer after the races).

Everyone else, Stan has a valid point and complaint. The harm from using music on a racing video without permission is negligible, but in principle, it's not much different than me walking into your garage and "borrowing" a tool off of your workbench. I know nothing about the process of getting permission to use copyrighted music, but seems it would be advantageous for the artists to make it easily and cheaply available for something like youtube.

You do a good job and it has been a pleasure getting to know you a little via email. I just wanted everyone to know that I realize now that I could have been a little bit more discreet and asked you personally. Tact has never been one of my strong points so consider the source whenever I say anything. You've got the licensing covered and I applaud you for that because most people wouldn't even consider it. Maybe this post at least made a few people aware of copyright and got them to think about it.

I give you two thumbs up and support your work. wink

The Tatnell bonfire is usually a good place to start looking for me after the Jerry Richert Sr. Memorial. I'm probably going to be the clueless looking gray haired guy in the folding chair.

Lighten up? I tend to agree with Stan. Her latest frolic into video not only uses copyrighted audio but copyrighted video from Network TV. If she wants to share stuff please make it legal period. I know a few guys who do video and take great measures to do it with no infringements. Being a newbie on Youtube is no excuse for failing to educate yourself on what is rite.

I tell it like I see it.
