A buddy was at a car show in Sioux Falls and saw a sprint car on display there that had a carbon fiber steering wheel on it. Anyone know who is making them and where one can be bought?
Thanks,
Brian

Does anyone realize that if and when carbon fiber shatters, breaks are whatever it can cut you like a razor blade,to make a steering wheel out of it might look good for show but putting some of these carbon fiber body parts even steering wheels around or near the driver is not a safe practice, just my opinion. If I am wrong please tell me,please,I have an open mind when it comes to safety, you may survive a wreck but bleed to death from carbon fiber lacerations, again I wouldn't do it.

The cost to weight savings isn't there for a local sprint team. However, I believe the F1 steering wheels are carbon fiber. There is another thing to consider also and that is whether the item is made of matting or spun fibers. When a tube made of spun fibers breaks it is not as sharp as stuff made out of matting. I have seen the difference personally.

F1, IRL, and NHRA have been using carbon fiber for many years from bodies, wheels, to suspension parts and none of those drivers have ever had any problems from it. Heck a lot of racing divisions use carbon fiber drive shafts which are a lot safer because they will shatter rather than steel or aluminum that will beat the car and driver to heck. Which happened to a friend of mine that drives a late model when his aluminum drive shaft broke and came through the cockpit.

@Bet n Housen... IRL, F1, NHRA, Nascar, etc all sit in and around Carbon. Hell, as you know, the whole F1 and IRL car is made of carbon composite... As far as a being cut buy a broken steering wheel or any other carbon fiber piece, broken, sharp aluminum will cut you just as bad. The argument/point is to have parts that won't break....
The nice part about the IPC wheel is that it highly reduces vibrations... Something that no driver would ever realize untill they have used something other than metal...
I've only seen two wheels in use, one by Dustin Morgan, and the other was Sammy Swindell. IPC will tell you that one has never been broken..... Except when a driver has thrown a fit and threw, beat the wheel into something.....

We actually used the wheel all last season with out any issues. As Pettas said there was less vibrations through the wheel as well as the wheel maintains it's shape, unlike aluminum which can bend and distort on impact of a wreck. Also the wheel doesn't get hot, absorbing temp from it's surroundings as aluminum does. The people at IPC make first class products and were very informative of thier products.
