Clear back in the 70s, I remember hearing that Alex Morales who ran the Tamale Wagon had a budget of $250,000 to run the California Racing Association season. God only knows what that would be today if the SCRA schedule had the same number of events.

Cheryl, thanks for posting that. I think it's funny how a lot of the stuff hasn't really gone up that much. I mean basically just doubled in almost 40 years. That's not bad. Everything but the engines. 3,000 to 50,000. I wish they would have only doubled in time. Thanks again.

From `83 till `00 I owned , drove, repaired ad paid for my own sprint car. At least 95% of all expenses came from my pocket and what the car made.I always had a decent car (1-2 yr old) and 2 complete alum 410`s. I had a new dually and enclosed trailor as well. I was able to win at most of the tracks I went too with a few track championships as well.
If I told people what my salary was during that period people would call me a liar but suffice it to say the early years paycheck wouldnt be minimum wage today.
I know some maybe wouldnt sacrifice as much as I did to race and it probaly couldnt be done today but not that long ago it was possible

The question should be, Do you need a $200,000 hauler and 3- $50,000 motors and 2-3 complete cars to run at the local level? central pa maaybe (except for the hauler)

I know from past experience that if you figure motor upkeep it costs around $1000 per night for tires, fuel, traveling expenses and thats not for repairs.Thats why sponsorships,a well to do wife or family ,or a great job make it possible. Its a lot cheaper to watch than race but most times not as much fun.A few of the top WOO teams spend in 7 fiquires if you fiqure every thing.A start and park cup team I read can spend several million to run 35th on back.Several people have told me the best way to make a million dollars in racing is to start with two

Junior Johnson, among others, has been quoted as saying that the best way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a big fortune.

I know what a good many sprint teams in East spend and boy do some of them spend, but the results sure don't show it,If people just knew what they spend to just make sure they get to every show and the poor results on a continued basis ,you could cry,for them,to know just how much they, its always the guys who can't afford it,to take food off the table, skip the kids shoes ,and not buy heating oil and keep the temp. down just to buy parts, most live on hot dogs half their lives and corn on the cob in the summer and the happiest people these guys have are the divorce lawyers because the old woman has had enough of these choices they choose to make.If you don't think this is not true, most of you know who most of them are.I am not a fan of people who try to race like this,no excuse for it and have seen it go thru a couple generations of the family until one day the light finally goes on and they quit. They have paid a tremendous price.

The $200,000 transports: it became a necessity when Ted Johnson started giving provisionals. Then other promoters started giving them at their local track for certain big events. Corporate sponsors expect their cars to be in every feature, thus Ted Johnson started the provisionals which kept the bigger sponsors happy. Everyone needed to have another car hanging from the roof of the transport, extra motors, extra everything, thus expensive transporters.

Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

+1 SSoT puts on a great show - and few (if any) have huge expensive haulers.

You are 100% correct and I fully understand the need for it on the touring level but you CAN do it with way less on a local level.
I will go to the tracks where I used to race and see massive truck/trailors in the pits and I know full well that some of these guys dont live 30 minutes from the track. Now dont get me wrong, I dont begrudge them one minute for having whatever they have, I just dont want to hear the same people complaining about the costs.

You know I have talked with a couple of locals guys who have the large toter and trailer and many of them state having something for their family to hang out in is a big plus to keep a local racing. Plus in many cases their monthly bill is cheaper than a dually and can be listed as a motorhome. Plus in many cases a sponsor buys them the rig as stated in the article at least the truck and trailer have a title and can be sold compared to motors, etc. Are there people who blow their $$$ on trailers, yes, but there are some that take what they can get. If you research on Hoseheads classifieds you can get some good deals on trailers and toters if you keep searching.

motorhead748: I should have qualified my answer about expensive trailers and Ted Johnson and other promoters giving provisionals. I didn't think of that on my own, it was Randy Hannigan's answer to a question about the need for big transporters in a Sprint Car & Midget magazine interview, guessing it was in the magazine about 2 to 4 years ago,

Teams spend way way more than they need to. They need to focus on what is going to make them fast on the track. Look at Silva Motorsports. ASCS National Tour Champions with just the right sized trailer.
