2007 Bumper To Bumper Interstate Racing Association Outlaw Sprint Car Series
Oshkosh Speed Zone Raceway, Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Friday, June 8th, A Feature #8

Defending Champ Travis Whitney leads Steve Meyer by about 10 points coming into tonight. Donny Goeden is the hottest IRA driver with 3 out of 4 recent Features wins has moved into the Top-10 ahead of leading Rookie contender Billy Hafemann.

Todd King is back tonight since Wilmot. King was very impressive last year as he dominated the show, only John Sernett winning the Feature last fall prevented King from taking the sweep.

Kurt Davis is back in his ride, using a 410 from Wayne Modjeski busting out a primarily dark blue paint scheme of what the Fatt Fro 14AJ looked like at the Nationals last year sporting sponsorship by Stone Mountain Access Systems.

Troy Wondra is making his 410 powered debut. He has numerous starts with the IRA using his 360, tonight he wheels a familiar No. 08 which was previously K.J Skelton’s 360 Sprinter with the MSA and Plymouth area.

Wondra had some difficulty during his qualification. He first spun to a stop in turn 3 on his warm-up lap and then spun to another stop in turn 2 on his only timed lap.

Weld Wheels Heat (10 Laps) Top-5 Transfer to A Feature
1. Scott Biertzer [1]; 2. Scotty Neitzel [3]; 3. Travis Whitney [5]; 4. John Haeni [6]; 5. Kim Mock [4]; 6. Joe Symoens [7]; 7. Bill Wirth [8]; 8. Tim VanDerVere [9]. DNF-Ty Bartz [2].

Bartz lead out of turn 2 over Biertzer. Whitney into a transfer out of turn 4 around Lap-4 for about a lap as Haeni takes 5th out of turn 2. Biertzer was closing on Bartz when the yellow is out on Lap-8 after VanDerVere stalls out above turn 3. In a bizarre finish, Bartz had the field covered and was heading out of turn 4 when he spins across the track into the infield as the heat races by. Bartz has got some of the weirdest bad luck of any racer I know of.

MPD Race Products Heat
1. Steve Meyer [4]; 2. Donny Goeden [3]; 3. Scott Uttech [5]; 4. Andy Hunt [1]; 5. Mike Reinke [6]; 6. Russel Borland [7]; 7. Jason Johnson [2]; 8. Billy Hafemann [8]; 9. Troy Wondra [9].

Initial start waved off and Johnson is sent to row number two. On the restart, Johnson and Uttech tangle on the low side of turns 1-2 for a moment were hooked together, but were able to unlock and keep going. Johnson is now at the back row. When it finally got underway, Meyer disappeared from Hunt, Goeden and Uttech. Around Lap-3: Goeden takes Hunt for position using the low line out of turn 4. Lap-6: Uttech sent Hunt back another spot entering into turn 3.

Lane Automotive / VMAC Racing Heat
1. Mike Kertscher [4]; 2. Billy Warren [1]; 3. Todd King [6]; 4. David O’Neal [2]; 5. Scott Young [5]; 6. Brian Kristan [8]; 7. Kurt Davis [7]; 8. Dave Uttech [3].

Warren took the early lead around the track as Kertscher takes command beginning Lap-2. King moved ahead on the low side to secure 3rd early. Really good racing between Kristan, O’Neal and Young for the duration as they sorted each other out and at times 3-wide for 4th. Each lap and a different driver had 4th, 5th or 6th. Lap-9: O’Neal was finally able to break away out of turn 2 and breathe.

Behling B Feature (12 Laps) Top-7 transfer.
1. Jason Johnson [3]; 2. Kurt Davis [6]; 3. Brian Kristan [9]; 4. Bill Wirth [7]; 5. Russel Borland [5]; 6. Ty Bartz [2]; 7. Joe Symoens [4]; 8. Billy Hafemann [8]; 9. Troy Wondra [1]; 10. Tim VanDerVere [10]. DNF-Dave Uttech [1].

Start: Bartz leads Uttech and Johnson out of turn 2. By Lap-3: Kristan is up to 4th. A Yellow flag after Bartz and Uttech meet each other on the backstretch and the end result was a spinner into the infield by Uttech and then ending the night on the hook. Restart: Bartz washes above the cushion around turns 1-2, Johnson will lead out of turn 2 as Davis and Kristan also dive under Bartz. Lap-5: Yellow flag after Wondra rolls to a stop on the backstretch, he was able to refire. VanDerVere 180 loops in turn 2 on the restart and rejoins the field. Back into racing and Bartz, Wirth and Borland trade positions a couple of times until it is settled in the latter laps.

A Feature (30 Laps)
1. Travis Whitney $2,500 [3]; 2. Mike Reinke [5]; 3. Todd King [4]; 4. Donny Goeden [12]; 5. Scott Young [1]; 6. Steve Meyer [9]; 7. Scott Uttech [2]; 8. Scotty Neitzel [11]; 9. Kim Mock [10]; 10. Jason Johnson [14]; 11. Brian Kristan [22]; 12. Kurt Davis [20]; 13. Ty Bartz [13]; 14. Andy Hunt [16]; 15. Billy Warren [17]; 16. Russel Borland [19]; 17. John Haeni [6]; 18. Bill Wirth [21]; DNF-19. Mike Kertscher [8]; DNF-20. David O’Neal [15]; DNF-21. Joe Symoens [18]; DNF-22. Scott Biertzer [7].
Alternate: Billy Hafemann.
Lap leaders: Scott Young 1-9, Mike Kertscher 10-12, Travis Whitney 13-30.

Start: Whitney took the very early lead out of turn 2, but Young powered around turn 4 and lead the lap. Red flag is out after Haeni spins to a stop in turn 3 and Biertzer had ever so lightly tagged that front wheel which sent him into light rollover. Second week in a row, someone else is carried off the track by wrecker after a Haeni spin. The 2002 Champ is really having some bad deals going lately. Haeni into the work area. Someone tagged the barrier wall off turns 3-4 in evasive moves to avoid Haeni, not sure exactly who that was, but Davis is into the work area too. Both Davis and Haeni rejoin the field as the No. 21J is mangled from front-to-back. Running order for the restart: Young, Whitney, King, S. Uttech, Reinke, Kertscher, Meyer, Neitzel, Goeden, Mock in the Top-10 then Johnson, Bartz, Hunt, O’Neal, Warren, Kristan, Symoens, Wirth, Borland, Haeni and Davis. Restart: Young controls the field as Kertscher makes quick work of Reinke through turns 1-2. Lap-5: Symoens calls it a night and ducks off.
Lap-9: Young is looking at the back end of the field as Kertscher takes 3rd out of turn 2 and then 2nd on the front stretch. Lap-10: Kertscher leads this one out of turn 2. Lap-11: Whitney into 2nd into turn 3. Lap-12: Whitney leads on the front stretch. Whitney and Kertscher swap the lead several times around the track as lapped cars determine who would have the better line as a slower car would be in front of Whitney on a certain turn then Kertscher would have the deal in a another turn. Really good racing between Whitney and Kertscher in heavy, heavy traffic!
Lap-19: Yellow flag for debris as what was remaining of the top wing side board of Haeni finally comes off on the backstretch. He would also receive the Lucky Pass. Running order: Whitney, Kertscher, Reinke, (Wirth), Young, King, Goeden (from 12th), Meyer, (Borland), S. Uttech, Neitzel and Mock in the Top-10. Johnson, Kristan, Warren, Hunt, Davis, Bartz, O’Neal and Haeni with what looks like a car you tray race in that WoO Sprint Car game with damage as his top wing is nearly useless. Initial restart was called back as it was a very slow pace and by the time Whitney hit the cone, he stands on it and is a little too advantageous of a start. Johnson had just taken 10th from Mock, but was all for naught. Better restart the next time around and Whitney is off and running, but is slowed when Warren stops by the turn 3 work area. Restart: Whitney again, mostly unchallenged on the restart. Lap-21: Devastating as 2nd running Kertscher and O’Neal duck off the track about a lap of each other with unknown issues. Lap-24: Whitney is about to hit lapped traffic and has a comfortable lead over Reinke, Young and King. Lap-28: Whitney is in heavy traffic over Reinke safe in 2nd as King, Goeden and Young are nose-to-tail battling for 3rd. Lap-30: Whitney wins his 1st IRA Feature of the year in his title defense.

Tomorrow, I mean later tonight, catch the IRA as we head to Wilmot for the Al and Marie Winker Memorial.
