I posted this on IOW as well. Not tryin to mooch, just lookin for some insight. This is my first year in the sprint car world so I'm lookin for some input. I'm 6'3" I've got a Big Boy Maxim (A-frame moved back) but would like a bit more leg room. My knees are almost against the tubes so knee braces are practically impossible because it restricts me from getting in and out of the car. I have a KSE full gear in good working order. When driving the car I'm comfortable but that's w/o knee braces. My question is rather I should have KSE convert my older remote reservoir unit to the Gen 2 style while it's being freshened along with the pump or sell it as is and buy a used Gen 2? Apparently they no longer make the left tube reservoir conversions but they can eliminate the right tube. I've found that when I drop into the seat I tuck my left leg under and bend my right knee so with the right side gone it'd make a huge difference and I can get by with the matching knee guard for the left side. They can freshen the gear, pump, and convert it for about $500 where as a good used Gen 2 is $800+. I'm even open to a GME, Nields, etc. thanks for any tips you may have.

I have converted two of my old style KSE gears to half gears and it makes a huge difference getting in and out of the car. They work great. I would save the money and convert it. Just use one of the old round style oil tanks for the steering oil. I just sold one of them on the classifieds.

you did not say how much you weight. The key to having room is how big you butt is. I am 6'2" weigh 215lb and have no problem with conventional steering gear. The key is rotating the seat back as far as you can. I take a hammer and pound clearance for the low cross bar over the torgue tube to actually fit up in the seat.

I weigh 205 and I actually had that bar moved for better clearance of the seat but I can't move the bottom of the seat back to far cause even with a tall cage car I still needed the head room so I had to find a happy medium. It's a Butler containment seat and I cut the flange for the head rest as far as I could around the A-frame to recline the seat as well as trimming the shoulder flanges on the shoulder braces to clear the A-frame. I literally spent 2 days mounting that dang seat, which gets kinda heavy after lifting it in and out of the car 10 times. All the way down to fabbed delrin spacers. I'm not sure what to think about the universal Gen 2 knee guards cause it doesn't cover the master cyl. which seems to me like it would hurt to bang your knee on. I also replaced the large reservoir MC that was in the car with one using the smaller plastic one.

I'm 6'5 and 240, and I've had a big max, and a few J&J's, honestly, the most roomy cockpit I've ever had, both leg and arm room was an '04 double arm guard J&J. I will say, however, any car I buy in the future will be a tall cage car. There isn't much you can do for leg room, I'm afraid.

I ordered the part from KSE and did it my self. It was under $75 dollars. The GenII knee guard did not fit it so I made my own out of a Kirkey knee guard. I'll post a picture.

I just spoke to Butch at GME. He was very helpful. He can also add a left tube reservoir. Thanks for the info.

This is the one off the gear I just sold. I cut the right side off and put a hole in it for the short side. On the next one I'll post I didnt put the hole in the right side.

With the Butlerbuilt seat it makes a big difference getting out of the car.

That looks good. I actually have that same Kirkey knee guard. I'll probably cut mine up and give that a try. Thanks.

Im 6'5", I have an ultra shield 2" tall seat. My first car I ever ran was a regular cage'd Schnee. Although it was a tight squeeze I fit. The car I ran after that had a lowered seat bar, and wow did that make a difference. It made everything have more room. I know Doug Wolfgang does it for quite a few guys around my area. Just a thought.

Depending on the car,you can cut off the round steering box end mounts and weld new ones on a little farther forward, this can gain you some needed room,is fairly simple, and won't hurt a thing.

I have an 08 Maxim. I'd have to look at it again but I think they're all the way forward. That's a sharp idea though. Thanks

You will probably find that it could be moved forward on about any chassis as they are usually spaced back a little because about every maker uses bolts for the clamping, the front bolt is the problem. But if you turn that front bolt into a stud, then all you need is enough clearance to get a nut on it to tighten on the tubeThis can be done easily by cutting a bolt down to size,"cut the head off",screw it in,tack weld it in place. Now you can use a nut on the stud you made and dont need the extra clearance to get a bolt in.You might easily move your box clamps an inch forward this way and I'm sure by now you know that can help a bunch.Hope I explained it well enough to do you some good.
