Thanks so much for posting this.
The 1955 Hawkeye Futurity was the first sprint car race I ever saw and I remember Slater's crash to this day.
I subsequently saw every Futurity they ever ran, including the one in C.R.
I remember all the events described, especially Ken Gottschalk's crash, the year that Johnny White came as a car owner, watching his car from flat on his back on a stretcher in the pit area after having suffered a broken neck in a USAC sprint car crash, Opp's big win, and the epic battle between Wagner and Blundy.
These were the races and heroes that made me a die hard sprint car fan forever.
Thanks for keeping their memory alive. May they never be forgotten!

Wonderful reading! I was just a kid during most of these years, and don't remember going to any of the Futurities except possibly the last one in Cedar Rapids. But, we lived near Knoxville and were fairly regular attendees there and saw nearly every driver mentioned race there. Brought back a few names I hadn't thought about in a long while!
Thanks so very much for posting. The site is now part of my favorites list.

I believe that these contributed videos on my website are from this era. They're just brief clips but worth a viewing. http://www.gotomn.com/racing/Gloria-Johnson.htm

Thank you for posting this. It brings back so many memories. My first Futurity was 1957. I was 12 and my dad took me. We had just moved to Des Moines and it was my first sprint car race. We had been to quite a few modified stock car races in Mississippi but this seemed like the big time. I did get to attend most of the Futurities and the fair races. Those daytime tracks were usually bad back then but hey, it was sprint car racing. I've been a big fan of sprint cars on dirt ever since my first race. We've raised 2 daughters and they are big fans too.
Thanks again,
Carl

Stan,
It looks like there is no catch or safety fence in those pictures between the track and the stands.
Who wants a front row seat!?

Ha, ha.
Remember when the flagman used to stand in the middle of the track to start the race? Still can't believe I never did see one get ran over! All it would have taken was one misstep while trying to run out of the way of the oncoming cars.
