PETERSEN
MEDIA: While continuing his first stint down under, Rico Abreu has
rang in the new year with a pair of top-10 finishes while competing at
the Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane, AU.
The St. Helena, CA native’s 2012 got underway on New Years Day, and
got off to a quick start as he timed in third fastest behind fellow
Americans Shane Stewart, and Donny Schatz.
Abreu then proceeded to charge to a third place finish in his first
heat, as he then worked his way up to a fifth place finish in his second
heat, transferring his Abreu Vineyards/Kaeding Performance/Shaver
powered No.89 machine into the dash.
Abreu scored a fourth place finish in the six car dash. Ordinarily
that would of lined his Swift Finishing’s/SCI/Yak Graphics machine in
the second row, but second place finisher, Donny Schatz, elected to take
the challenge, which inverted the field and added five laps to the race
and lined Abreu up in the 12th spot.
As the 35-lap feature got underway, Abreu searched around the track
as he worked his way through traffic, and quickly entered the top-10.
With laps beginning to wind down, Rico moved to the top of the track
and grabbed the sixth spot at the line as he chased winner and fellow
American, Shane Stewart, Donny Schatz, Dan Murray, Bryan Mann, and Daryl
Hodges across the stripe.
The Abreu Vineyards Racing team was back in action last night, again
at the Archerfield Speedway with a few more top Americans on hand.
Rico again wowed the crowd as he timed in with the fifth quickest lap of the night, with a very star studded field checked in.
The first heat showcased Abreu charge up from his eighth starting
stop to score a second place finish, as he then finished sixth in the
second heat. Heat race action was good enough to transfer into the dash,
where he would pilot his Stadlehofer Construction/Factory Kahne
Shocks/Maxim to a sixth place finish, lining him up sixth in the
feature.
When the feature went green, the bottom of the speedway was the
preferred line, as the field fought with each other for bottom
real-estate.
Coming from the sixth spot, Abreu was only able to get up to the
fifth spot during the feature, but would eventually fall back to the
seventh spot as the race came to an end as he chased Jason Meyers across
the stripe.
Robby Farr would pick up the win over fellow Americans Donny Schatz and Shane Stewart.
“It was a pretty good night tonight,” explained Abreu. I wish the
track would have been a little more race friendly during the feature,
but we will take the seventh place finish. I have to thank my crew for
all their hard work, and hopefully we can get a win this weekend before
we head home.”
Abreu would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Kaeding Performance,
Stadlehofer Construction, Factory Kahne Shocks, Sprint Car Innovations,
Santomauro Racing Products, ButerBuilt, Swift Metal Finishing, and 7
Industries for their continued support.
ON TAP: Rico and his Abreu Vineyards team will return to the Brisbane
Speedway on January 6-7, before heading home for the Chili Bowl.
