Tulsa area drivers go for Chili Bowl gloryTulsa, OK - January 06, 2012 By: Lonnie Wheatley Lucas Oil Chili Bowl PR
Several local drivers hoping to keep the Golden Driller in the host state were featured as the initial press conference for local media took place at the QuikTrip Center on Thursday afternoon.
With the 26th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals set to take place next week, January 10-14 at the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway following a Monday practice, Sooner State contenders Jonathan Beason, Donnie Ray Crawford and Blake Hahn visited with Tulsa media about the prestigious event.
Beason ranked as the top-finishing Oklahoma driver last January with a fourth-place finish behind Kevin Swindell, Sammy Swindell and Michael Pickens. Crawford won a preliminary feature last year and teams with Hahn out of the Hard 8 Racing stable this year.
Only once in 25 previous editions of the ChiIi Bowl has the Golden Driller stayed within the host state, that occurring in 1994 when Broken Arrow’s Andy Hillenburg took the top spot. But the trio on hand Thursday are among several with legitimate hopes of keeping the coveted trophy in the Sooner State.
Beason came the closest to the top spot last year, finishing just one spot shy of the podium after advancing from “B” Main action.
“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about what things might have gone different for us to get the win,” Broken Arrow’s Beason commented. “Last year, the Midget stayed in the garage all year between the 2010 and 2011 Chili Bowl so it was almost a surprise to us to run so good. I think we’ll be even faster this year.”
Crawford, who made his third Chili Bowl championship feature last year after posting a fifth-place finish as an event rookie in 2007, is unphased by the idea of racing against the likes of NASCAR champions Tony Stewart and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
“We’ve been racing this kind of stuff all year, this is what we’re pretty much used to,” the third-generation racer from Broken Arrow explained. “When guys like Tony (Stewart) get here they have to adjust, it’s almost like they’re chasing us.”
Crawford is teamed with young Hahn from Sapulpa, an unlikely pairing given the Hahn-Crawford rivalry of old. Hahn is ready for his second Chili Bowl after a maiden voyage last year aboard a Bob East Midget.
Like Beason, Crawford feels good about his chances of Chili Bowl glory. “John (Kantor) and Hard 8 Racing has given me the best of everything, the stuff I’ve got is every bit as good as Sammy’s (Swindell) or Tony’s (Stewart) or anybody else’s stuff. We’ve got what we need, all we need is just a little Chili Bowl luck to go along with it.”
Hahn explains, after winning the Chevy ECOTec Midget portion of last weekend’s Tulsa Shootout, “That should give me a big advantage, I’ve got a lot of laps in a Midget already plus a ton more in the micro so I’ve got at least twice as many laps as anyone else going in.”
Beason, Crawford and Hahn lead an Oklahoma contingent of Chili Bowl competitors that currently numbers 36, with some other top Oklahoma contenders including Broken Arrow’s Brady Bacon, Mike Goodman and Chett Gehrke, Owasso’s Daryn Pittman and Matt Sherrell, Tulsa’s Dustin Morgan, Norman’s Danny Jennings, Oklahoma City’s Andy Shouse and Guthrie’s Michelle Decker among others.
Currently, there are 261 entries for next week’s Chili Bowl Nationals representing 31 states as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Finland.

Sorry to say Scotty won't be pit reporting this year. Aimee Loyet will be reporting from the pits and victory circle. Aimee is a University of Missouri graduate with a bachelors of Arts in Communication and a Sunset Hills, Missouri native. Loyet got her start doing pit reporting at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She is the Marketing and Social Media Coordinator for Loyet Motorsports and has done freelance work with Badger, USAC, POWRi and ASCS. Post-graduation, Loyet was privileged enough to work at Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and Red Bull Indianapolis Moto GP during 2011.

The Chili Bowl Nationals has long been known as a gathering place of the best of the best from all forms of racing, from the upper echelons of the sport to the grassroots level.
And the 26th edition of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals set for next Tuesday through Saturday at the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway is no exception with NASCAR champions Tony Stewart and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., headlining an impressive list of 2011 series champions.
While Stewart and Stenhouse took titles under National television spotlights, champions from all variety of Sprint Car and Midget series as well as one the nation’s premier Late Model series will be on hand as well.
Coming off his third NASCAR Sprint Cup title, Stewart returns to the Chili Bowl for the first time since 2008 in search of his third Chili Bowl triumph.
Stenhouse, who made the cut for his second Chili Bowl championship finale last January, went on to capture his first championship at the next level by taking the top spot with the NASCAR Nationwide series.
While the Chili Bowl is teeming with open wheel aces from the Sprint Car and Midget ranks that Stewart and Stenhouse climbed, Rick Eckert represents the popular Late Model racers. Eckert makes his fifth Chili Bowl appearance and first since 2010 after capturing the World of Outlaws Late Model championship in 2011.
Among the open wheelers, at least three drivers captured multiple championships in 2011 including Levi Jones, Brad Loyet and Brady Short.
Jones captured both the USAC Sprint Car and USAC Silver Crown championships in 2011 and takes aim at his first Chili Bowl finale since 2009.
Loyet added his third POWRi Midget championship in 2011 while also capturing the ASCS Warrior Region title in his rookie year of Sprint Car competition. Spearheading the potent six-car Loyet Motorsports stable, Loyet guns for his fourth consecutive Chili Bowl championship main event.
Short, a part of the A.J. Felker stable, tries for his first Chili Bowl finale after earning the MSCS (Non-Wing Sprint Car) and Bloomington Speedway titles in 2011.
One champion actually landed a ride for the Chili Bowl by earning his title, as the Midwest Open Wheel Association fields an entry for Jerrod Hull as part of his championship package with the Illinois-based winged Sprint Car series.
With countless champions from previous years throughout the QuikTrip Center, champions from 2011 include the following:
Bryan Clauson – USAC Midgets Shane Cottle – Kokomo Speedway (Non-Wing Sprint Cars) Dave Darland – King of Indiana Sprint Series (Non-Wing Sprint Cars) Rick Eckert – World of Outlaw Late Models Taylor Lynn Ferns – USAC Mopar D1 Midgets Blake Hahn – ASCS2 Outlaw Micro Sprints Jerrod Hull – Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) C.J. Johnson – NCRA (Winged Sprint Cars) Levi Jones - USAC Sprint Cars and USAC Silver Crown Brad Kuhn – BMARA Midgets Cory Kruseman – USAC Western States Midgets Brad Loyet – ASCS Warrior Region (winged Sprint Cars) and POWRi Midgets Brady Short – MSCS and Bloomington Speedway (Non-Wing Sprint Cars) Mike Spencer – USAC/CRA (Non-Wing Sprint Cars) Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. – NASCAR Nationwide Tony Stewart – NASCAR Sprint Cup Richard VanderWeerd – USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Cars (Non-Wing) Matt Westfall – Waynesfield Raceway Park (Non-Wing Sprint Cars)
