As we enter 2012 I think back over the past two year and two significant deaths.
The first is Dan Wheldon who fell victim to a high dollar, Las Vegas promotion in which too many cars, many driven by drivers lacking sufficient experience, were allowed to start a race on a dangerously fast 1.5 mile track. RIP Dan
The second is the demise of "National Speed Sport News," the iconic motor sports newspaper in the United States. The economy and advent of the "electronic age" probably both contributed greatly to this death; however, as a subscriber of over 45 years, I still miss receiving the paper (even though it was often as much as two weeks late due to "snail mail" inadequacies). I miss Chris Economaki's "Editor's Column" immensely. It was the first thing I turned to each week when I received the newspaper. Of course I will always cherish the memory of an evening spent with Chris during a business trip to London in the early 1990s. It was a privilege to mave a couple of drinks and then dinner with a legend like him who claimed that he'd flown to London using "frequent flyer miles" as he needed bo purchase a new Burberry raincoat. RIP NSSN
