Harryfan,
"Whoa Nelly" brought back great memories of the Sunday afternoon races televised from Ascot in the early days. My family lived in El Cajon and this was before the days of cable so it was always a challenge to see if I could get the television antenna adjusted to provide at least a fuzzy picture of the races. Another of Dick Lane's comments related to the "classic left hand turn" at the end of the front stretch.
I recently finished a book about Bobby McCoy's life and in it Lane was called a "famous movie star." I don't believe he ever achieved movie stardom as I think his career was limited to a few cameo appearances. But "whoa nelly" and "classic left hand turn" are great memories.
Also pictures of early sprint cars without cages are fantastic. The drivers really had big brass ones in that era. Of course they knew no difference. There were old drivers and bold drivers but very few old bold drivers!

I have to agree w/you Brett. Can't blame Steve and Jill at all. I mean what other promoter pays cash at the end of the race.
I keep hearing that Queen song in my head, "Another One Bites the Dust." When will it end.
Now isn't it just 2 dirt tracks in So Cal now? Perris and Ventura? With gas prices on the rise, I can only imagine how many fans are going to be forced to quit going or following the racers out of town.
Keeping my fingers crossed that something magical will happen, but not holding out much hope.
RIP Chet and Mark. You might be gone but never will
be forgotten.
