AGP: All Done Bar The Shouting

Tyrepower Sydney Speedway

Unfortunately tonight’s A-Main, the 32nd running of the Valvoline Australian Sprintcar Grand Prix was washed out at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway. The A-Main will now be re-run with twenty-nine laps remaining as a prelude to the Coca-Cola Sprintcar Stampede on the next time the Sprintcars compete on Sunday, January 1.

The race began with light showers persisting but still dry enough to keep racing. Lynton Jeffrey took an early lead and set up a sizeable margin before, on lap six, spinning in front of the field and being collected by David Craft. Craft was visibly unhappy with Jeffrey and made his feelings known as both drivers remonstrated on turn four.

The A-Main went no further as the showers got heavier. Officials and drivers tried to get the track back into a raceable condition as at one stage, the showers eased but the decision was made to cancel the race and proceed with the A-Main on January 1.

In the other divisions, the Street Stocks A-Main went to Brett Cotton from Brett Mitchell and Andrew Blackley.

The Late Model A-Main was a win to Darryl Grimson from Bruce White and Ben Nicastri.

All eyes are now on Thursday, December 29 when the 70th running of the NSW Speedcar Championship will be held along with the Australian Demolition Derby. The Wingless Sprints and Litre Sprints are also on the program.

Schatz Opens Qld Tour With A Win, Rico Fifth
Archerfield Speedway posted Tuesday December 27, 2011.
Donny Schatz opened his five night tour at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway in the best possible manner with victory in Round 7 of the KRE Race Engines Sprintcar Track Championship on Boxing Night, leading home David Muir and Cameron Gessner in the thirty lap Feature race. Fellow American Rico Abreu opened his International Sprintcar racing account with a solid fifth place finish and won himself a legion of fans in the process.

Driving the Monte Motorsports #17 J&J and starting from position five, Schatz moved past Cameron Gessner for second at one end of the race track on lap four and then took over the lead at the other end when Andrew Scheuerle's race came to an end with driveline problems in the #25 Ausdeck Racing entry, the KRE Championship contender rolling to a stop in turn four and subsequently pulling out of the event.

Muir, first in KRE 4 and third in WSS 1 this season at Archerfield, moved past Gessner for second a lap after the restart and set sail after the man who arguably ranks as the number one Sprintcar driver in the world, catching him in lapped traffic only for the yellows to come back out and snuff out the momentum he was building. Schatz however was near perfect in the final two thirds of the race, patiently waiting out a couple of yellows and then biding his time as two lapped cars fought for position ahead of him late in the going to win by just under three seconds and tick the first of five boxes in front of him during his two week stay in the Sunshine State.

Abreu, without doubt the shortest man to ever wheel a Sprintcar around Qld's Home Of Speedway, also commanded his own attention throughout the evening. Whether it was drivers and crews checking out the cockpit of the specially modified USA89 Kaedings Performance/Abreu Vineyards Maxim, the turn of speed he showed to stop the clock at a very impressive 11.405s in his first competitive look at the track (second only to Donny's 11.375s) or the character he showed to fight his way back into a top five finish in the Feature after starting sixth and dropping as far back as ninth, Rico got himself noticed and accredited himself very well.

The fans on the hill certainly agreed - and there were a lot of them at the special Boxing Day event - as they cheered his every move and then flocked to the ABC Auto Gear Racing transporter he shared with Pete Thorley after the races were finished for their chance to meet the nineteen year old Californian and grab an autograph from him.

KRE 7 was full of the wheel to wheel action Sprintcar racing is renowned for and Heat race wins during the evening went the way of Brett Thomas, Kevin Titman, Paul Rooks, Darrell Hodges, Steven Johnson and Peter Lack. Andrew Scheuerle, fourth in points after the Heats, won the Dash from Cameron Gessner, Pete Thorley, David Muir, Schatz and Abreu while Hodges, Dan Murray, Anthony Lambert and Luke Oldfield all transferred to the Feature via the B-Main.

Bryan Mann's fourth place finish in the A-Main coupled with Scheuerle's DNF will see Mann extend his lead in the KRE Race Engines Sprintcar Track Championship as the Series passes the half-way mark. Mann also leads the Sprintcars Qld Club Championship point score heading into the final Club race of 2011 at Kingaroy Speedway this Friday night.

In other racing on the Boxing Night programme, Matt Hardy won the Auto Parts 4U Action Series AMCA Nationals Feature from Eric Knight and Rene Frenkin, James Kennedy won the P&M Motor Body Works ASCF Junior Sedans Feature from Patrick Brennan and Jayden Peacock while Paul Hovey, Luke Thomas and Brian Gardner finished 1-3 in the twelve lap Modlites Feature.

The next event at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway will be night two of the annual Summer Of Speed schedule on Sunday night January 1 with Round 8 of the KRE Race Engines Sprintcar Track Championship featuring USA stars Donny Schatz, Rico Abreu and Shane Stewart plus a Demolition Derby, Fireworks and a host of support class racing on the programme.

James McFadden accounted for a classy field of 42 entrants tonight at Adelaide’s Speedway City in winning the fourth round of the Hi-Tec Oils World Series Sprintcars Championship.

It’s his third win in four rounds held so far.

“Glen Beaton (his crew chief) had the car set up perfectly tonight,” grinned the very happy winner, “it seemed like it didn’t matter where I put the car I could go quickly. I think I did about ten laps without lifting off the gas pedal. It was a dream to run this car tonight.”

The Queensland based Northern Territorian (Alice Springs) 21 year old sped his Totally Workwear #25 COOL Chassis to a strong win in the 35 lap Speedweek opener, relieving early leader Jason Johnson of the #1 position.

“I screwed up in traffic,” lamented Johnson, “you can’t afford to give any of these guys an inch and unfortunately I coughed up the lead at a critical moment and spent the rest of the race playing catch up.”

Johnson’s #47 Haynes Mechanical Maxim was fast all night, and began the A-Main from the front row alongside Vortex Gold Shootout winner David Murcott.

The American shot to an early lead and within half race distance the battle for second had extended to a five-car conflict between David Murcott, Robbie Farr, Steven Lines and Brooke Tatnell.

Lines powered his Monster Energy / Monster Energy #7 J&J to his second consecutive runner-up position in a WSS A-Main, following up on his result at Mildura for Round Three.

“Full credit to James (McFadden), he was fast and he did a good job. They put themselves in a position to win this race and we came up just a little short. It was a really enjoyable race; there were lapped cars everywhere and about four or five of us battling for position. It’s night like this you love racing Sprintcars.”

Jason Johnson finished right on Lines’ tail in the battle for second with the very consistent Robbie Farr fourth in the East Coast Pipeline #7 Maxim.

“Considering we were in no man’s land with qualifying, tonight’s not a bad result. It really could have gone either way coming into our second heat tonight but fortunately we were able to scrape into the Shootout and at least get a decent shot at a decent feature result,” Farr admitted.

Fifth car home was WSS Grand Marshall and Australian Sprintcar Champion Brooke Tatnell who had an up and down night in the Toyota Genuine Parts #1 COOL.

Tatnell set quick time in Revolution Racegear qualifying and looked set to rack up high points coming into the Shootout but an incident in his second heat where he made contact with a half spun Glen Saville saw the #1 COOL flip down the back straight.

The team thrashed to repair the car in time for the Shootout but the eight times WSS Champion wound up qualifying 6th for the A-Main – two spots back from the 4th place situation when he entered the event.

Tatnell would be the first one to admit, he really didn’t make the impact he was hoping for in the A-Main.

David Murcott put the #83 Mainline Dynolog Dynamometer Eagle Chassis on pole with a blitzing 12.280s lap in the Gold Shootout – as so often he has over the last season and a half.

The Victorian hard charger was involved in a major incident earlier in the night which saw South Aussie youngster Luke Bowey take a wild ride and Murcott also join the upside down club.

The crew returned the hastily repaired car to the track to finish the event but they wound up changing a motor prior to the Shootout – it was a busy night for the 2010/2011 Series runner-up.

He challenged several times for the lead but faded back to 6th by the fall of the chequers.

Coming in behind Murcott was the ever consistent Luke Dillon in the Hogs Breath Café #81 Eagle over fellow Adelaidians Matt Egel (Universal Forklifts #29 QT Chassis) who won the “Hard Charger” award for his rapid advancements, Ryan Jones (Murray Machining & Sheds XXX) and Trevor Green in the Natrad #4 Maxim rounding out the top ten.

Eleventh was a good result to salvage for Ian Madsen in the Australia Wide Towing #11 (he had a damaged front wing in qualifying that hurt his time trial performance) ahead of 12th place Dylan Jenkin (this result probably doesn’t accurately describe his consistency) Max Dumesny in 13th (Valvoline / GKR Transport Maxim) Daniel Pestka in 14th, Brad Keller (#19 Fatchen) in 15th and rounding out the finishers Sydneysider Glen Saville.

Recording a DNF against their names were Ricky Maiolo, Jamie Cobby, Garry Brazier and Warrenne Ekins.

Round Five of the Series (and Round Two of Speedweek) will be conducted at Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway Tuesday night, December 27.

Kendrick Shines In First Series Win

It was a team reversal for Kendrick 92.9 Racing with youngster Jason Kendrick bringing his race car home on top of the podium ahead of team mate Kerry Madsen for the Boxing Night show at Coates Hire Bunbury Speedway.

In one of the biggest nights of the racing season, with a bumper crowd in attendance, Kendrick showed the speedway public why his name is being bantered around the racing circle so often of late.

Earlier in the evening, he set close to a record fast time of 12.98, only three hundredths of a second from the lap record of 12.95 set by Max Dumesney way back in 2004.

The heats were extremely fast with winners being Kerry Madsen, Victorian Matthew Reed and visiting US driver Kaley Gharst taking two heat wins.

A front row with Madsen and Jamie Maiolo for the A Main event was to be a scintillating affair from the outset. After several stoppages and many exits with cars dropping out machinery failures, Kendrick was too fast for his team mate Madsen.

On the re-starts he out shone his closest rivals and showed maturity beyond the five years of racing under his belt. In the end he took the win and advanced his narrow four point lead in the Battery All Types Southern Thunder Series.

The night boasted a massive support program with big numbers of Wingless Sprints where Darryl Clayden out drove Kris Coyle to win the night. The Street Stocks were large in numbers. Although visiting North West drivers took the win, it was locals Wayne Thomson and Mick Hamon, who debuted a new car who were outstanding.

The Junior Sedans put on some excellent racing as they prepared for their WA Championship in Esperance over the new year weekend.

The next event is scheduled for January 7th with an historic event as a four car USA Late Model team will take on all WA drivers in a massive night of racing.

The night will be supported by the 360 Sprintcar Power Series with names like Ryan Farrell, Ben Ellement and Jason Kendrick to do battle. This will no doubt be a great show for the crowds to witness as the venue continues to boast hard hitting speedway events for the local region.
