Photos of my Hutchinson heroes growing up, Charlie Pitts, Henry Ellington, Jay Schrock, and Dick Hendershot. It just don't any better than this. From birth I grew up with these drivers at Mohawk Speedway. Gene McClellan was another one. But my memeory of him is real sketchy. I think maybe he ran a salvage yard on west 4th. Maybe moved to Wichita? I even recognized a winch truck in one photo from Angel's Construction next to the #26. The older I get the more these photos mean to a lot to me. Because the older I get the more these memories of my childhood get really fuzzy. I'm sure I attended every Hutch Nationals from from the beginning to 1981. With the exception of 1966 when hometown legend Henry Ellington won in Gene Angels #76. I have been to told I cried and pouted that whole afternoon. Until my aunt who made us late for the races took us swimming. We got there and it was sold out. Back then it was on KWHK or KWBW am radio.
For some reason Joe Lehman was a favorite and he was from Colorado. I'm not sure why back then he was a favorite. I remember in the Feature he would put a block of dry ice in front of the radiator. I thought that was cool.

This one could win a few car shows today!
Interestingly- The window is cut out almost like an Edmunds(angles down like a '7'-yet Edmunds car hadn't taken storm yet. I wonder if Edmunds got his ideas for a top from the Kansas cars? Luther Brewer said Edmunds would come in and look everybody over just like they all did.

Great photo....Is Bill Nelson a happy racer or what!!!There are professional racers that aren't that happy.....Great car, if it's out there it needs to be saved. Hoot Gibson.

Looks to me like a 4 door humpback sedan with the middle and ................the middle cut out. Coupe bodies were getting harder to find in some places.

So they made a coupe out of a big ole sedan. What character in those days.

The perfect example. narrow it down and cut from the back of the door to the windshield. 1935 Ford. The word is harder to find, but the real deal was the price was getting way up for a dirt track budget. Man by this time in history the hot rodders hated us dirt trackers.

Henry Ellington taking Victory Lap after Winning the Hutch Nat's in 1966 in Gene Angel's car.jpg)
|
So ugly its beautiful, this car driven by Henry Ellington exemplifies many of the cars that Henry
drove over the years to hundreds of victories over his career in modifieds and stock cars.
This race has to be the single greatest victory for a Huchinson racer back in the day.
81 modifieds took to the track that weekend. Many of the great stars of the era were there
besides the ones provided by DW in these great color photo's. Others that competed included
Buddy Cagle, Grady Wade, Davey Ross, Harold Leep, Dick Walker, Walt McWhorter,
Melvin Rogers, Benny Taylor, Bobby Reynolds, Evard Humphrey, and Frankie Brenfoerder.
Till the day my dad died, he loved talking about this day, and this race. The day one of our
own won the Hutch Nationals. Thanks Dwane for letting us Hutch guys enjoy reliving this
great moment in Hutch Modified Nationals history.

I wonder if that is not Bobby Fitzsimmon from Dodge City. This is the same color red as the cars Van "The Man" Gemmill raced in the early 70's. It has the same style #11 also. I trying to remember who owned those cars.

It wasn't as ugly has the cars Jr. Angel brought to the nationals after Gene was killed. Yellow and orange wheels #76 sedans.
The story was Harold Angel went all out that year. It had a Ernie McCoy engine in it.

This is the car that Jr. Angel raced for several years after Gene was killed. It was yellow with orange wheels. I remember the tornado that went through there property. They live just east of the Buhler Haver Road in the sand hills. In the area of all the TV towers. At one time the tallest structure in the US. KTVH/KWCH 12 Tall Tower Power. That goes to a TV tower in North Dakota now, I think.

I tried to crop this and lighten it up some to get a better look at the driver. The time trials list http://winfield.50megs.com/Hutch_Nationals/Fair/30Jul1966.htm if this is 1966. Roy Bryant is list as driving a #11. Harold Leep is listed as driving the #57 (#11) Nance Brown Hound which as beeen changed to 57?? My first thought was Bob Fitzsimmon in a car from Dodge City? Rick Salem FaceBooked to say it might be Larry Torson. But writes back say it is not Larry of definitely not Bob.
Maybe it blew up or crashed and didn't qualify??
