So Yesterday My daughter Meagan decided to not go to a charity barrel race for horses and decided she would rather have a father daughter date with me at Ventura Raceway. She would be my crew chief till after hot laps then we would be met with my friend Brad for some extra help .We got our pit passes and started to set up camp and Meagan was stoked. Where we were pitted we had surfers surfing on one side of us and on the other was the horses, Her specialty and passion, and in the middle was Dad and the old #27. I told her I had to relieve myself and I would be right back on the way I see Ray Stansberry. I say “ how’s it going Ray” he replied are you still running that rope retention strap for your drag link? “ I replied “yes”. He then told me I had to by a manufactured one. I told him that it was and he said by who? I said “Stunt Rigs Inc. and I am the president of the company”. I began to explain that the tether was made in accordance to the fiber manufacturer and that it was twice as strong as that crappy flat webbing. Webbing 2500lbs and the Samson Tech 12 rope is 5000# and the more importantly webbing has a 450 deg melting point and the Tech 12 being used has a 900deg melting point. Remember these tethers dangle in front of approx1500 deg headers! I also told him I could bring up all the info on my I-Phone. He pointed his finger at me and said “buy a manufactured one or you are not running”. Remember THE STRAPS BEING USED AND MADE BY Ray Stansberry certified MANUFACTURES, ARE FROM SCRAP HEAD NET MATERIAL ARE NOT SFI RATED. I replied that he was aware of the tethers and they have been on my cars for the last 2 years and now I know why the car counts are the way they are. I said if I was forced to buy a inferior product then I would load up and leave. By the way we won the all coast challenge with one on the car last year and anyone who knows me or seen me drive knows I have crash tested these as well. I then tried to keep a positive attitude and go to Jim Naylor for some help on this matter. I stopped him on his grader and he told me to give him a couple minutes and he would come talk to me. After a couple minutes a gentlemen came to the pit and explained he was there on behalf of Jim Naylor. I thought to myself what after 9 years of racing here he doesn’t have the balls to come talk to me man to man! I guess when you are a big time promoter you have to have a entourage and all messages have to be sent through his people. His people then wanted to hear my side of the story so I told him all the facts and he came back and said I had to buy one from the Track Shack!. Now they just ruined my day with my daughter. Not even a you have it fixed or have yours approved by next race! Remember Ray new they were on the car as well as Tom Harper Had them on his as well for the last year. The rules say : All cars must use a VRA approved drag link retention strap at all times. I asked Jims People what the VRA approval process was and I couldn’t get a straight answer and from what I could see it was Ray Running around like a dog wanting to flex and piss on fire hydraunts. He could not give me one educated answer on why they could not be used. REMEMBER I am a expert in this field and as president of Stunt Rigs Inc. I manufacture tethers and slings that fly stunt people and actors with high tempratures and severe conditions everyday. I have been to school on rigging and how to inspect hardware used for rigging. This is the same material used to tether the deck lids on NASCAR Stock car deck lids. I know Ray honestly can’t tell you how to even inspect Webbing. But remember Ray doesn’t recognise the sponsor on the side of my car as a real company! Maybe he could talk to the IRS and get me out of paying taxes. There was a time when everything was hand built in Sprint Car Racing.I had machined some top mount restrictors into the bottom of my stacks and had Ray inspect them before they were ever run and they passed then but are they illegal now because I didn’t buy them from Kruseman? Is my Chassis Illegal now because I clipped the front of it myself? Where would Bill Simpson be if Ray Stansberry had been the tech inspector for Indy Cars? Ray Stansberry Has some power issues and issues dealing with people that could be just childhood insecurity issue but I will be the first to admit I am not an expert in this field. Try to carry a conversation with him and count how many negative things that fly out of his mouth. Or shit he talks about people. During this whole ordeal I never raised my voice or threatened anyone. BUT VENTURA RACEWAY HAS LOST ITS SOUL! There is no saving this sinking ship. After 9 years of my family racing and bringing people to the track we will never ever come back and I will tell this story over and over. Thanks Ventura Raceway for destroying my day with my daughter. In the end we just packed up and left. Thanks for taking the time to read this and next time someone asks about the car count you can at least give them a reason why or one of the reasons why racers are not showing up. Stunt Rigs Inc. Wow, you got balls writing this but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sounds to me like the same idiots who are running our country into the ground. Sometimes, you just can't buy common sense.

I remember that someone with the last name of Granatelli once complained about how every time the CART board of directors mandated a change in the rules, that the only people that provided the parts to make the car legal would be a member of the board of directors. And the price was always very high.

Ventura Raceway is no longer the great race track that it was a few years ago . They have a track that used up ! the dirt is not there any more ! there are to many EGO'S and drivers that have NO RESPECT for other drivers there ! ( daddy's that buy there kids a new car every time they crash in to you ). R.I.P. VRA ! See ya next year in the USAC 360 races !!!

I just can't see preventing someone from running solely because of an unapproved drag link strap. Yes, the rule came about because Kevin Gobrecht was killed 12 years ago by a suspected untethered drag link came into the cockpit. It was a freak deal, not a commonplace type issue. I've done sprint car tech and would not have prevented this guy's car from running based solely on a non-approved drag link strap. It seems like the reasonable thing to do was to allow the car to run as is that night and request that the car not return until it either had it's current part approved or an approved part installed. A video of the strap being failure tested with the pressure visible would be enough for me but even then I wouldn't allow it to be used by other people until it received some sort of official certification.

Yes, this is a safety issue. Got that. Note that the intent of the rule is to keep you from skewering yourself with your own drag link. On the safety scale, it's fairly low on the list but it's one of the easier ones to visually detect. Based upon his expertise, it's probably within his technical abilities to manufacture his own seat belts but it wasn't as if he was trying to do something like that. The problem with sending a guy off for a thing like this is that there are other alternatives than Ventura to run at and you've just ensured that at least one car won't be back. Normally I wouldn't comment on a thing like this but I just hate to see a track keep shooting itself in the foot like this.

Just to make sure I understand the facts correctly?

1) This was a very important day for you to spend time with your child

2) You could have purchased a part that cost you less than $20 and saved the day to spend with your child, which you considered very important

3) You are upset because you believe your parts are technically superior, but decided rather than to seek approval preemptively , you would wait to get caught an then complain that the rules should not apply to you because you have expertise in their manufacturing. Seems like you might want to try this the next time you get pulled over for speeding ("limit doesn't apply to me, I'm a race car driver"....I believe a certain Nascar driver had fun with that recently)

4) Rumor has it that Jim was overheard arguing your point to the tech crew on your behalf, but from the sound of your rant perhaps that did not happen???

5) You are done with Ventura Raceway because they are asking drivers to respect and abide by their rules.

Gosh - I think I would have spent the $7.95 or whatever and spent the time with my kid and then seeked approval going forward - that seems to be the more rational way to play by the rules and set my priorities straight. But then again, my priority would be time doing something with my child over making sure my ego was properly soothed

Hay, 27. I with you on what you have wrote, the places has gone to shit. The guy, running the place, reminds me of our white house, The guys, who come around to check you car, are the same. We have been to the track, a lot this year. If you take a look in the pits, most of the guys, are not there and will not come back. That were there last year. Because of people running the place. Plus, take a look in the stands. The fans have got tried, of the bull.........TOO..... Will be going to the USCA 360 races this coming year. May have to drive, a little farther. But will see some good sprint car races.....With a bigger car count.... Thumms Was there 3 weeks ago. I think they had.... Maybe 12 to 13 cars in the main...... This much say something about, what's going on.......in the HEAD OFFICE........

Don't forget it is a 'my way (Jim Naylors) or the highway" track. 27, sorry you ran into a PMSing tech, as I remember he did his share of bitching when he ran a car.

On another note: announcing=joke.

I think you missed the part where he asked how to get it approved.

Principal is something very important to people. The saying is "you gotta stand for something or you'll fall for anything".

Hopefully Ventura will take the criticism constructively and change a few of their procedures or at least their approach.

i think when they booted josh ford out of there last month it had a much larger effect than anticipated . maby people that felt safe at ventura looked at the place differently after that event , their car count has gone down since then .maby im completely off base , i just dont think so !!! this was not the problem , just the fork in the road ...

Josh Ford was not "booted" from Ventura Raceway. His crewchief was suspended and fined for abusive foul language aimed at officials and then walking through the pits yelling obscenities. This is in direct violation of VRA Rules and Regulations. This was not the first time this type behavior had occured. At no time has Josh not been allowed to compete. Only his crew chief was sanctioned. Josh's team has chosen on their own not to compete.

thats a pretty strong statement considering josh was chasing the vra championship...for the team to not finish the season at ventura says something ... exactly what it says seens to have effected the car count at the vra races..the car count was extremely stable right to that point , that is not arguable ..
