The JSTS show at Kasson, Minnesota on Saturday the 8th, had some great racing! The feature had a great battle between Greg Bakker and Austin Mc Carl and throughout the field were other wheel to wheel battles. There was one BIG problem with the show. The flagging was HORRIBLE !!! The flagging was done by the flagman from the Jackson Speedway in Minnesota. There were no 2 starts the same. Cars were scattered, not lined up in any consistent pattern. The sprint car world has a lot of up and coming drivers, but unfortunately, very few "up and coming" officials, flagging, tech inspection etc. JMO

Did they use a chalk line coming out of turn 4??? Why is it so hard for the flag man to see cars out of line or jumping the start.. I like Knoxville, jump early, they show you the black flag as a warning,do it again,Go to the back.. ENFORCE the starts. I like the cone restarts on the front strightaway...Flagman should have a birds eye view of the restart...IRA does a good job on starts,restarts....

I agree with you. Absolutely GREAT show last night but the guy on the flagstand was going to get someone hurt. Super slow to throw the caution with stalled cars on the track, even when Lusk got uspside down in turn 3 he was slow on the red. I mean it's a 3/8 mile track for crying out loud. Starts were rough also. They did use a white line out of turn four to start but it was still rough.

Non-wing cars just couldn't figure out how to use that restart cone, let alone the guy that was going to run out onto the track to retrieve it with the field at full throttle.. Good thing that he thought twice about it!

I believe it was 22 JSTS cars there last night, Greg Bakker, Austin McCarl, Lee Groz, Jacobsma and Andy Jones rounded out the top 5.

Witch cars were the JSTS regulars and IMCA and UMSS guys ? Just wanting to see where they are from I know the McCarls are from knoxville and Bakker, Jacobsma, lusk, and Juhl, are from Jackson. Did the rest come from UMSS, and IMCA?

Not here to bitch about sprint cars in SE MN, but the flagging was pretty poor. My wife, who doesn't get to a ton of races, mentioned a couple of times -- "boy, the flagman is out to lunch". The racing was good and hope they come back, but some advising/changes need to made to the race program--JMO.

Andy Jones, Chris Graf, Scott Broty, Cody Hahn, Brad Barickman, Sye Anderson and Mike Luks have been running mostly UMSS. Al Gilbertson runs some Jackson, UMSS and whatever other nearby 360 races fit his schedule. Rob Caho Jr. was the non-wing winner and he did double duty in one of Donavan Peterson's winged cars. Billy Johnson mostly races with the IMCA at Arlington and a few UMSS shows. Jody Rosenboom has been running the IRA and the car owner doesn't run much 360.

Hope that helps a little.

We've never used a cone in the middle of the straightaway on starts before in the wingless class. My opinion is if you are going to start a race from the chalk line out of turn 4 then why can't you start racing before you get to turn one? After the green flies you should be able to race, not just fall in line and play follow the leader into one and hope the guy in front of you isn't going to be slow and get you a quarter lap behind before you get out of the first corner. One thing is that the lighting isn't very good there and you really couldn't see the cone until you were right on it. I only saw it when it was flying over my head after it got run over a few times. We kept running it over trying to get rid of it but they kept putting it back out there Smile Was a fun night in Kasson. Needed some more moisture up top to make for 2 racing grooves for the wingless cars. If you tried going up there you were either going to get shuffled back or hit the wall, just nothing to grab on to up there saturday night.

I think, 8 full seasons have passed since Lev last flagged at Jackson.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

Bill hasn't been there for awhile. Don't think he has flagged there since that one couple who ran for a season. ( sorry can't think of their last name. The wifes name was Sabre)
when the green flag drops, the bullshit stops!

The flagman was the regular flagger at the Jackson Speedway. I thought he was bad there, but he out did himself at Kasson. I guess I thought that Jon would hire an good, experienced flagman for his JSTS races, but I was wrong! I wish Doug Clark would have been available! JMO

Mark, were you watching the parade lap and the start? Because of what happened on the parade lap was key to leaving those starts go.

Here is the way I saw it:

We give the guys the 1 to go as the cars are in turns three and four, both at the flagstand and on the raceciever. The cars are all together, behind the pace vehicle. Not quite all lined up, but pretty much in a pack behind the pace car. And there is only seven cars, and a lap and 1/4 to get in line.

At that point a couple of guys deciede to pass the pace truck and get in an extra practice lap.

Those cars barely get back in line, and maybe don't get a great start as a result of barely getting back in line.

Then in heat two, a guy must have seen what the guys did in heat one and thought he would try about the exact same thing. Again he barely got in line.

One point that was brought up (by T-mac) is Kasson is a much smaller track than Jackson is, and none of these guys have ever raced here before, so maybe they are "Eager" and maybe you should give the guys two parade laps once they are basically lined up to get their "Thoughts in Order and their Belts Tightened up"

Maybe guys could not tell which Truck the pace vehicle was? Because of the layout at Kasson, you gotta push the cars off on the track and the push trucks are all going around the track to get to the exit as well.

In the feature there was not a problem at all. Maybe the guys figured out which Truck was the pace Truck?

We don't have a rule that used to be around back in the good old days that if you pass the pace car you go to the back.

Oh and there is some pretty good video available at www.meeksvideo.com.

Thanks to Mark Meeks for the Video!

And also thanks to the Gilbertsons and Kasson Speedway for putting on the race.
