It never ceases to amaze me how the drivers in the most unsafe junk class can wear t-shirts and jeans with no gloves. They're junk, they burn gasoline, I'd be wrapped in four layers with fireproof underwear and an onboard extinguisher.
I hear you on the Mid-West Safety Team. We had a Late Model driver go over at an IRA/Late Model show at Cedar Lake a few years ago. Steve Laursen son of the late Sprint Car driver Russ Laursen was the driver. Steve messed his neck up and the Safety Team did a great job getting him out. He ended up having surgery but he's back racing again.
I don't know the circumstances of why the Safety Team is hanging it up but probably the time commitment and travel costs or a combination of the two. It's getting tough to follow these races around whatever our capacity might be as far as supporting the sport.

We are lucky here in Central Missouri to have a great safety team who started out with the Winged Outlaw Warriors and are now the safety team for the ASCS Warrior Region. These guys are all paramedics/firefighters and have their own firefighting vehicles and quick response vehicles along with some top notch extraction equipment. Plus, they're a great bunch of guys!

Unbelievable! Completely unacceptable!
Good thing the drivers were able to get out, otherwise they would have been "toast".
The track wasn't even close to being prepared for a large fire.

Yes, in 1992. Seriously, you're bringing up crap from almost 20 years ago????? The Wolfgang subject has been beaten to death on the message boards in the past.

I saw a driver burn to death at the now defunct Balboa Stadium in a San Diego Racing Association modified sportsman race in the late 50s. It's a sight one never forgets.
I realize that was a different era safety equipment wise; however, such things obviously still happen. The driver in this video was extremely fortunate to be able to get out of the car before it fully erupted into flames.

Spot1,
I respectfully disagree!
Apparently we need to talk about Wolfgang's accident more often! I don't want to re-live his pain and suffering or debate "the lawsuit", but Doug's accident should serve as a reminder, a "call to action"!
I can't believe there are still race tracks, like the one featured in this video, that are so ignorant when it comes to fire safety.
Racers need to remember that they do have a choice. A few years back, I ran a few mini sprint races during the off season in an arena called Mototown USA (located in near Hartford, CT). We were having fun, but found out that the fire extinguishers that had been used one week, hadn't been refreshed for the next. They were also selling beer without a liquor license. Needless to say, we stopped going...
I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for Doug Wolfgang, who paid the ultimate price, to still find race tracks terribly unprepared...

Stan,
Gill Radtke was a guest of Jim Tretow on the racing roundup show september 19th. He needs knee surgery and will have the operation in the spring. He was doing safety for 39 years. Everyone involved with the IRA will greatly miss him and his crew. All of the drivers had great comfort while traveling to know we had a top notch safety team who knew all of the drivers and families.

I'll put Knoxville's safety crew (yes, a Midwest crew) up against any crew in the country. Another good safety crew is at Huset's Speedway in South Dakota............yep, another Midwest Crew. And, I have also seen the complete opposite at other tracks, as well.

We are all dumber for having read your post!
The Midwest Safety Team is a specific group, they do not represent the entire Midwest.
Your thread added no value to the discussion; you are an idiot!

When did a track in NM become a 'midwest ' track?

Won't let me embed or start a new thread. I am not in the debate over midwest safety crews, just came across this.

On a side note. My college roommate did Demo Derby's at his home track in Osky. I use to give him hell for having airplane fuel in a boat container right behind him and no fire suit. Then in one of the 'heats' a guys whole interior lite up. I couldn't even see this guy. Then the guy comes diving out onto his hood, with his Tshirt on fire. I just shook my head and looked at my friends now wife and said, "See this is why I gave him sh** about the suit, it's not about 'I'm not a pu**y' factor."
Fact, if you are in a car and competing, WEAR A DAMN FIRE SUIT!!!
Edit* I always felt WoO and the All Stars should have a 'Workin Woody' type of Fire crew. 2 guys who follow the series around, get paid and have a killer safety truck. Cause not all tracks have the best crews.
and in the original video. Don't park the tow truck below the car. Tracks are banked. Nothing like fuel running down hill and lighting up the tow truck.

Are we happy about what happened at the Enduro....no
Did it bring to light things that need to be improved upon...yes
In almost 20 years of running the Enduro twice a year that is the first time we have had a fire we could not get out in a matter of seconds.

Understable, however that display of safety worker/crew ineptitude isnt even worth defending. One time, just one time when you sit and watch a fellow human burning their flesh in a deal like that and you would feel exactly the same way we all do. It's 2011, get with the program and have SEVERAL LARGE EXTINGUISHERS at the ready on every safety vehicle and stationed in key spots in the infield. Make it a point to inform the racers where they are situated during the pit meeting, when it comes to fire you can never be ready enough. Plus where is the safety workers firesuits?? No race should commence without at a minimum a couple well equipted workers. They will be the guys jumping in to pull the burning driver out of the wreck, they need firesuits plain and simple. No excuses, just action. Remedy this deal for your racers interest in the future.
Cheers!

Don't even get me started with the row of sign poles down the backstretch without any barrier from the track...??? Insane...
Cheers!
