As the weeks wind down to the National Open, Daryn Pittman continued his strong season with win #12 (410 and 360) at the Grove on Friday. It was Daryn's first ever handicap show victory and he looks to be the Posse's best chance at winning the Open this year.
In somewhat of a surprise, Ryan Bohlke finished 2nd, Henderson was 3rd, Cory Haas was 4th and Chad Layton was 5th.
While that win was important and a good start for the weekend, the main focus of the weekend was Selinsgrove for the Jim Nace Memorial. This event was a twin feature program with every pay amount somewhat related to the late, great Jim Nace. Similar to Port Royal last weekend, Selinsgrove was the only track running 410's which led to a great car count of 43. Once again, there were no invaders.
It was similar to the WoO format with a 4 car invert in the heats and quick time + the 5 heat winners going to the dash.
Surprise, Surprise, Daryn Pittman was quick time at an unheard of 15.8, a new track record. If any of you have ever been to Selinsgrove, it's scary how fast they get around there.
The heats were taken by Pat Cannon, Brian Monteith, Greg Hodnett, Danny Dietrich and Brian Leppo.
Pittman pulled the pole for the dash, won that and then went on to win the 1st A Main, worth $6000. Cannon finished 2nd, then Hodnett, Dietrich, Layton and Dewease. There was a 6 car invert for the 2nd feature so Dewease and Layton were on the front row and Daryn started 6th. If Daryn were to win this feature and sweep the twins he would win a whopping $26,000.
But it wasn't meant to be, he started strong and was up 4th by the backstretch on the opening lap but faded to 6th at the finish.
In somewhat of a suprise to outsiders, Pat Cannon won the 2nd feature to back up his win in the 1st feature in the same event last year. Pat's win was also worth $6,000. That team is interesting. They dominate the wins column all over the place in PA with their 358 and are always the team to beat when they pull in to the 358 pits. The team REFUSES to move up to 410's because of the Goodyear tires, so the only 410 event he runs all year is this one, an open tire race. I swear that team has the hardest hitting motor in all of Central PA. The thing just goes. I'm convinced that if the team ran 410's full time he would a top 5 car in PA. The last time he ran with the WoO was the National Open in 2009 (Hoosiers) and he finished in the top 5. He's a hidden talent. Time to move up and work with the tires, everyone else has.
Logan Schuchart, Bobby Allen's grandson and 358 standout, made his much anticipated 410 debut and impressed coming from 5th to 1st in the B, blowing by Stevie Smith like he was standing still. As he crossed the line, the rental motor went sour and they scratched for the night.
Brian Monteith was up to 2nd and pestering Pittman for the lead in the 1st feature when he lost a tire, I'm pretty sure he was running Goodyears.
It seemed like more teams were running Goodyears than last year at this event.
2nd feature finish : Cannon, Layton, Dewease, Dietrich and Hodnett.
Next week, Lincoln is the only track with 410's running on Saturday so a high car count is expected. The Grove has an "Outlaw Tuneup" show on Friday.

Jesse Keen needs to hire Logan. The retired retired guy should retire.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

It's an opinion, I, and the majority of Central Pennsylvania fans, think they should move up. Get over it.

Great stuff Dirthawk!
Reminds me of the "Notes" in my dearly beloved National Speed Sport News.
And if you're gonna take the time to share a report, you have the right to share some fair opinions.

I always figured the Highlands team doesn't move up because they'd prefer to dominate the 358s rather than only maybe get 3 or 4 wins in a 410 season.
