I like the idea of wearing the protective device instead of placing the padding on the car. I would be very cautious of wearing actual catcher's equipment. If that stuff is exposed to fire it could melt very quickly. There's lots of nylon, polyester, and other plastics in that equipment.

A purpose-built, leg padding constructed of fire resistive materials (Nomex, Carbon X, etc) would be an interesting proposition. Depending on the design, perhaps a device like this could protect against injuries resulting from driveline failures and other foreign objects that enter the lower portion of the cockpit. I know I'm not the first person to think of this.... Does anyone have any thoughts???

In my opinion, this knee pad is the only way to go..... It snaps in around the steering gear tubes and is super easy to remove for the car wash.
