ALEXANDER FIRED UP AS USAC WEST COAST 360 SERIES RETURNS TO HANFORD!
(Gardena, CA, September 7, 2011) Greg Alexander, the 22-year-old Sprint Car racer from Torrance, California, is all fired up for the return of the USAC West Coast 360 Series to Giant Chevrolet King's Speedway in Hanford, California for the Jim Turner Memorial this Saturday night, September 10th. An eighth place finish in the new Chuck Tyler Motorsports Maxim car at Santa Maria Speedway two weeks ago has fueled Alexander's enthusiasm for this week's event.
An eighth place may not raise a lot of eyebrows on the outside, but once you scratch the surface and see how it came about, one can understand the young driver's enthusiasm. Alexander only qualified 13th in the 19 car field, but he quickly redeemed that slower than normal time with a win in his eight lap heat race on the 1/3 mile clay oval.
For the 30-lap main event, Alexander was originally slated to start in the 10th spot, but when a car who was supposed to start in front of him had a flat tire, he moved up to eighth. Once the green dropped, Alexander aimed the pretty #72 car towards the front of the pack and quickly steered it to fifth. However, when the car in front of him checked up, Alexander had nowhere to go, hit the brakes and spun out causing a yellow flag.
The spin sent Alexander to the back of the 19-car field for the restart. Regular racing fans knew what was in store from the talented driver. His patented move through traffic was about to begin. Once the green light came back on, Alexander was on a mission and he did not disappoint anyone in the stands. He passed car after car and drove all the way to seventh place in a crowd pleasing display. For the record, another car raced past him on the last corner of the race and relegated him to eighth, but as usual, he had passed a ton of cars in the main event and if it had been a few laps longer, he would have passed even more.
Despite missing two races, Alexander still sits ninth in the USAC West Coast 360 point standings.
Saturday's race will be Alexander's fourth of the year at Hanford and thus far in 2011, he is not happy with his outings at the track with a 10th, a 17th and a 21st place finish. He and the team plan on a much better showing this Saturday night.
