Chad Humston – Fast Track!

(Bill W) August 30, 2011 – It was a fast track Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. A 360 track record was laid down in time trials, and Chad Humston registered the second quick time of the night. The Giltner, Nebraska driver and the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m team didn't get much luck after that however, and a DNF in the feature was the end result. The team plans on returning to Knoxville on Saturday for Season Championship night.

Clint Garner set quick time and a new track record in qualifying, and Chad was second quick. "We were second quick, but we were still a long way off from Clint," he says. "He really had that thing dialed in to set a record like he did."

Starting sixth in his heat on a fast track, the luck, or lack thereof, came in the form of the helmet shield popping open. "We should have finished better there," says Chad of the heat that gave the top five the honor of starting within the feature invert. "I'm never one to make excuses, but I ran into the first corner and my shield came open. The fresh air was fine, but the dirt and mud and rocks weren't. Once I got that handled, I tried to recover, but it was tough to pass on the track the way it was."

Chad pulled up on the fifth place car on numerous occasions, but could not make the pass. "It was close racing for a while, but we couldn't get there," he says. "That was big, because that put us starting back in 16th for the feature."

The team readied for the feature and their starting spot outside of row eight. Another patented charge from the #1m in the feature was expected, but it was not to be. "I thought the car felt pretty good to start the race," says Chad. "I think we were moving forward for the four laps we were actually in the race. We broke a rocker arm and that ended the night."

The DNF was obviously a disappointment. "I really believe we had a top ten and maybe a top five car from where we were starting," says Chad. "Stuff happens, and there's nothing you can do about it once it's over."

The team plans on running Knoxville Championship Cup Series Season Championship Night at the Knoxville Raceway, and then may venture to the Belleville Highbanks in Kansas on Sunday.

I need to do a better job, and I have work to do!

Well last Saturday night did not really meet our expectations, that's for sure. We qualified second which is good. The bad news is that we were only .418 seconds off of quick time. Chad's shield blew up on the start of the heat race. Then we managed to break a rocker arm in the A main and had to pull out. Tough night. But we've had worse.

Now before we all start pointing fingers at the 40 car....remember: When you start pointing fingers there is always one pointing out and three pointing back. (The thumb you ask? Stuck up my a$$ probably.) Sorry Kiddos....

You see this is really all my responsibility. It's my team. My helpers, I hired the driver, the crew, etc. I make all of the setup calls, bars, shocks, gear ratios etc. Chad gets in and drives and does a great job. Sure we all have our good nights and bad nights. For the most part I am the primary engine builder too. Man have I got work to do.

Obviously, the exceptionally talented Clint Garner, his humble and hard working team, and their engine builder Al Parker have all done their jobs. And they have done them quite well. As a matter of fact, they have done it so well that I am embarrassed to return to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday Night.

Probably the biggest embarrassment of all is that I have allowed my team to crumble to the point that it is almost one half of a second inferior to the toughest of competition. My loyal helper of many years, Mavin Gardens, has finally found greener pastures. Believe me when I say I wish him all the best. Obviously he will be missed and cannot be replaced. No-one can ever replace Marvin.

If it wasn't for my two helpers Cal Werner and Parker Burch, we wouldn't even make it to the race track. Those two have helped fill fuel jugs, mount tires, change wings, engines, etc. You say it and they do it. They are good helpers that is for sure. But I have more work to do. A lot.

Football season is here and school has started. I can barely compete with a crew made up of a 17 year old playing varsity football and a barely 10 year old that's a fifth grader playing flag football. I have a lot of work to do.

I'm not making any excuses. The fact is that we can barely find the time and personnel to race one night a week. And when I run the numbers, logistically and financially, Belleville Kansas makes more sense than Knoxville Iowa. It's certainly closer, it pays $750 more to win, and probably most important, I won't have to try to compete against the fastest 360 in the Midwest.....at least until I can do some more work.

Peace Out!

Mark,

You guys have been a class act this year both on the track and on this board. You may be feeling beat-up for the year, and you may have work to do. That being said you guys have been a threat everytime you come in the gate. Wrong place, wrong time has cost you a lot of equiptment and countless hours of work. I am sure none of us on here would blame you if you jotted down the handful of weekends, that if you could change you guys would be leading in the points. Hoping to see you in Knoxville again next year. You are losing the 360 crown to a guy that was a huge factor in the 410 championship in 2007. He has so many laps on the Knoxville 1/2 mile.

My wife and I have loved watching Clint for years and usually sat within 50' of his parents. His speed is one reason for the championship, but knowing the track and when to push an issue and when not to have been a big reason too.

Chad is doing great and after 9 years behind the wheel he can hold his head high. A few different cards this year and you guys would be getting the big trophy.

Mark, I just want to thank you for putting a post like this on this board. I didn't interpret any of that as "Making excuses" one bit... I see it as a great car owner who appreciates his driver and team members enough to give them the credit they deserve and appreciates his fans and fans in general enough to explain the reasons decisions are made regarding the team and to educate them on some of the ins and outs of owning a competitive team. You didn't owe anybody any explanation about why that particular Saturday night turned out how it did nor any explanation as to why you would be in Belleville next Saturday instead of Iowa....it's your car, your money and your sacrifice ( and your teams) to put it on the track each time you do... Next time I catch you guys at a racetrack please have an XL T-Shirt ready for me to buy, you just earned a new fan. Best of luck in the rest of the season.... Dustin Arnall
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
