DAY WINS HIS SECOND JOHNNY KEY
CLASSIC WITH VICTORY AT WATSONVILLE
WATSONVILLE,
CALIFORNIA (August 28, 2011) – Salinas’ Ronnie Day stormed past Prunedale’s Justin
Sanders with six laps to go in the 51st Johnny Key Classic to take
the $5,000 victory before a huge crowd at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on
Saturday night. The win marks Day’s
second of the 2011 season and his second Key win to go along with his 1998
victory at San Jose.
With the
victory, Day also takes over the points lead in the Ocean Sprints presented by
Taco Bravo with just three races left in the championship.
Two-time
Johnny Key Classic winner Chuck Miller paced the field to green in a vintage
race car and more than a dozen former winners were in attendance including six
who competed in the event.
2009 Johnny
Key Classic winner Tommy Tarlton won the $751 to win Dash for Cash to grab the
pole position for the 50 lap feature.
But Tarlton stumbled on the start allowing outside polesitter Kyle
Larson to take the lead. A four car
pile-up on the initial green ended the night for Tommy Laliberte.
When the
race restarted, Tarlton continued to backpedal as he fell back to fifth
place. A serious fire for Orval Zane
Burke brought out the red flag on lap eight.
As the #OB1 car came to a stop in turn two, Burke emerged from the car
engulfed in flames. Fire crews quickly
put the fire out and Burke walked away with reported second degree burns.
Tarlton got
past Sanders on the restart for fourth and Day began to apply pressure on
Golobic for fifth. The race stayed green
through lapped traffic up to lap 23 when Rico Abreu tangled with the lapped car
of Kurt Nelson in turn three. Abreu, who
was running second, and Nelson were both able to continue on but the stoppage ended
up marking the “halfway” break for the race.
After a 15 minute break for crews to work on their cars, the
race resumed with 27 laps remaining. On
the restart, Golobic and ScottsValley’s Evan Suggs engaged in a
back-and-forth battle for sixth while Larson drove away from second place Tim
Kaeding.
Art McCarthy spun to a stop to draw the next caution and on
the restart Kaeding began to challenge Larson for the lead. The top-three cars of Larson, Kaeding, and
Tarlton closed up in lapped traffic by lap 36.
The exciting battle for the lead continued until lap 41 when
all three were eliminated in a surprising crash in turn three. Larson slowed in lapped traffic while Kaeding
drove in deep, resulting in a hard collision that collected Tarlton. Nick Ringo, Jr. ended up on his lid in the
ensuing accident.
Larson, Kaeding, and Tarlton all restarted the race at the
rear with young Justin Sanders now leading over Day and Suggs. 1999 Johnny Key winner Eric Rossi flipped on
lap 42 but was uninjured. Day and
Sanders raced side-by-side with Day taking the lead by a nose down the
backstretch before the caution flew again on lap 44.
Day finally seized the lead on the restart, sweeping by
Sanders on the outside to officially lead lap 46. Day continued to lead all the way to the
double checkered flags with Sanders finishing second. Golobic passed Suggs to take third and Bud
Kaeding fifth.
2010 USAC National Drivers Champion Bryan Clauson won the
$200 DDNi Hard Charger award, driving from 18th to sixth in his
first career winged start. Abreu drove
back to seventh while Eric Humphries, Jason Statler, and Tim Kaeding rounded
out the top-ten. Incoming points leader
Tarlton finished 11th.
A pair of 12 lap b-main events set the 22 car field for the
feature, with the b-mains won by Suggs and Laliberte. Qualfying for the 24 cars that had to race
their way into the feature was led by Eric Humphries at 11.699 for the Ray
Scheidt’s Electric Fast Time Award.
Two-time Johnny Key Classic winner Brent Kaeding had a
serious accident in qualifying, hitting the wall in turn one at nearly full
throttle. Kaeding eventually walked into
the ambulance after a few tense moments but was transported to the hospital for
observation with undisclosed injuries.
Day leads the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo
standings by eight points over Tarlton with three events to go. The series continues September 23 against the
California Sprint Car Civil War Series.

Why is TK 10th when he drove by the 00, 15, & 89 in the final 9 laps? Was he consider a
lap down after the wreck?

according to the "my laps" chart tk, larson and tarlton were all on the lead lap.
what is posted on my laps and what is posted on ocean speedway have 7th through 12th in a different order.
the posted results at the track were the same as what the my laps show.
i know the posted results at the track are "unofficial" until they are reviewed, and sometimes corrections are made.
i noticed the discrepancy as well. that is why i am waiting before i update the ocean sprints web site.
i usually wait a day or two before i update the ocean sprints site just in case something changes, so i don't have to redo everything.
i have asked for clarification and i am sure it will be forthcoming.
to indy and beyond!!

I understand it is being discussed and that the original reason had to do with drivers who got out of their cars during the incident. We should have an update tonight.

I thought if you got out of your car you were disqualified.

But they all continued. Can't go back and add that penalty now. That's a "time of infraction" type call.
I'm confused.

when abreu and lapped car nelson brought out a red, abreu restarted infront of the lapped cars - the right call. larson, tk & tarlton should have got their spots infront of the lapped cars they had passed to but were penalized to the back when they all restarted because they got out of their cars. if they were going to penalize the drivers twice -restarting at the back and their finish-why did the officials allow them to coming back on to finish the race if they were going to take away their finish? also they have tarlton infront of larson on the finish? why tarlton infront of larson when larson finished in front of tarlton?
tk and larson are not running points at ocean, tarlton is running points - 1 point can cost him the championship.
since they were allowed to continue to race, the call should be they get their finishing position when taking the checkered. the penalty for all 3 was to start at the back. dont double penalized them twice. it not the drivers fault the officials let them back out.

The lapped cars were restarted at the back after the break and that is why Bud Kaeding and Rico Abreu restarted ahead of them. But the lap 41 restart was not within five laps of the finish so lapped cars were mixed in.
Word from John Prentice is they are going to reverse this finish and put the 21, 83, and 89 where they belong. I will make sure to get the official order before posting it.

Do you get DQ'd if you get out of your car or not? What is the point in having the rule if you can't consistently apply it?

"The lapped cars were restarted at the back after the break and that is why Bud Kaeding and Rico Abreu restarted ahead of them"
lap 24 brought a red out for abreu and nelson. taking it back to lap 23. the officials made the call to take the break at lap 23. the wreck is what brought out the red flag, explain that is why bud kaeding and rico abreu restarted ahead of them? i'm confused on the ruling.
"But the lap 41 restart was not within five laps of the finish so lapped cars were mixed in."
what? this does not make any sense can you please explain this one too? i've never heard this rule before.
"Word from John Prentice is they are going to reverse this finish and put the 21, 83, and 89 where they belong"
what about larson's finishing position? he didnt finish 12th.
i hope ocean makes the right decision, i would hate to see anyone lose a championship because of a call that was questionable.

I understand why Rico was placed in front of the lapped cars, but Bud left the track and worked
on his car in the pit area. He should have started behind the lapped cars.

I don't make the rules just trying to help explain them from what I saw. The rule in place on Saturday night was lapped cars to the back in the final five laps. I BELIEVE we have had that rule all season long.
Yes I am pretty sure Kyle Larson is part of this as well; it should be amended tonight and then we will have the official rundown.

This is what I was wondering as well, I know our car got DQ'd last year for it, and I'm pretty sure Bud did earlier this year at a KWS show, but then whoever was involved this weekend didnt?
You have to apply it every single time, no exceptions, and that is exactly what they told us they were doing when they DQ'd us....

Good luck enforcing that rule in the future...
