I am pretty sure that was Enid, I keep looking at that picture and the guy with both hands in his pockets looks familiar and it my ex brother-in-law he rode to Enid with me that day. bill Humphrey the guy in the white pants had a auto repair shop in Tulsa by the Pepsi plant and he let us come there on Saturdays and work on the cars. He also let Fred Parkhill keep his McClaren sports car there. At the time Fred was the best road racer in the area he won the Ponca City Grand Prix around the lake every year and went all over the nation to race. The difference between the 2 kinds of cars was crazy. They were working on McClaren one day with 1/4 inch torque wrenches and being real delicate with everything and here I got the big pry bar and sledge hammer and was beating on the 117 to straighten something out. We all had a laugh out of that. I just wish that I had got see that sports car race with its big block injected Chevy, man was it loud.

Definitely Enid. That guard rail is on the outside of the horse track that was between the race track.

I have looked at this picture several times and think with my wifes help i know who everybody is. Bill Humphrey in the whit pants, my ex brother-in-law, Joe with his hands in his pockets the man in the brown shirt is Ron hunt ,a mechanic that worked at Bill's shop and the guy with all the hair bent over looked familiar and with my wifes help. it was me. I don't understand why it takes me so long to see things sometime. When Carol and i got married my hair was longer than hers, my hippie stage. i got on as a Tulsa Fireman 4 years later and had to cut it, then I quit the fire department when the Ford co. offered a job at two times the pay and better benefits.

That is David at Hutch in the 17, this is 1973 or 74, the tail does not have the spoiler on it that was put on later. I don't know if Norman had bought the car yet or was helping with the sponsorship. This was before they started coming to Tulsa every week. .When i started helping i could just look at the drivers hands and tell which one it was by the way they held on the wheel.

The way it was explained to me that they were built at Jelly's shop by him and David and other employees. The 117 was built at Jelly's but by some other guy who worked there. it won best looking race car at show and Norman put the builder down as the other guy and jelly was upset. Almost all the cars in that area were off the Edmonds design then changed to what the owners wanted. None of Norman's 3 cars were alike, the 17 was the oldest and lightest, it was 2 inches narrower than the other 2 and had a longer cage. The 117 was Norman's favourite I guess because it was the first that he had built, the 71 was offset 2inches in the front and 1 inch in the back and it had some other changes on it that were different then the 117. It was built at jelly's shop with David helping.

The Yellow #18 Sedan was an ole Bob Peck car that Glenn Puett of Junction City, Ks. owned. They dropped in a Chev. V8 and went to Hutch. Hauled it in an old city transit bus with a Chev. V8 cloned in place of a Detroit. I helped them that day and shot an 8mm video of their lame endeavor. One of Glenn's mechanics from the taxi service drove it but I don't recall his name. Afterwards it sat out in back of the cab stand for several years and I think Glenn sold it to someone in Texas.

He just sold that 18 in the last couple of years didn't he. The 18 that is. Leon Spain may have drove it to.

I believe it is John Kalb and Ray Riner with Davey Moore. I wonder if Ray wasn't the car owner. I'm thinking that car may have become the Rick Riner ride in 78 or 79 #4. Heck Know I just don't remember that version of the #17. Did it run in that color very long.

I have my NCRA yearbook out and it says this race ws on 10-19-1975. There 92 supers that signed in and the late model races made it a very long day. The results and money won:

Ray, What is interesting about your statement is the winnnings paid out, 1975 purse and in 2011 , some 36 yrs. later we run for less on Weekly purses and just $300 more to win for Series races. Somewhere along the way inflation has not caught on in the payouts for racing, sorry did not mean to change subject or hijack the thread, just seen that as interesting.
