Tulsa
Oklahoma (August 22, 2011)- After a three-week off period, the wild,
untamed and thunderous sprint cars of the Oil Capital Racing Series are
set to embark on the state’s only remaining half-mile dirt monster for
the last time in 2011. The venue is the historic Thunderbird Speedway in
Muskogee Oklahoma. What was once a normal sized track in which to
compete on, Thunderbird’s racing surface today provides race teams a
unique challenge with it’s extremely long straight-a-ways and perfectly
shaped paper clip design. Race teams and race fans alike circle dates
that Thunderbird offers sprint car racing. The teams for the ultimate
challenge in speed and skill and the fans for the opportunity to witness
the type of action that only Thunderbird can produce in the region.
“All tracks have their own personality,” said OCRS president Barry
Grable. “While they do so, there are some similarities that you can
typically find between this track or that track. As for Thunderbird,
that is one racing venue left in the state that isn’t like anything
else. When Stanley and Dennis Slader reopened the track last year, they
just didn’t provide teams and fans with another track, they brought back
an old friend to life and the racing community has embraced it well.
There is a lot of history here. If she (track) could talk, you would
hear some awesome stories. To either race here or to relax in the
grandstands and take in the show, we all become an extension of this
historic facility. This is not a venue to be taken for granted. If you
look around, Thunderbird stands alone as a one of a kind racing facility
and we look forward to producing a great show this Saturday night.”
The OCRS warriors last challenged “The Bird” last Memorial Day
weekend. On that occasion, it was the inaugural running of the “Callie
Slader Memorial” race. Current OCRS points leader, Tulsa’s Sean
McClelland, skipped town with the lion’s share of the loot that night.
McClelland brings a scant seven-point advantage (1058-1051) to “The
Bird” in the chase for the 2011 Harold Leep Championship Trophy over
Moore Oklahoma’s Whit “The Gasman” Gastineau. The Gasman leads all OCRS
competitors in the number of visits to the ‘Goodyear Victory Lane’ with
six. Gastineau also took the first trip to Thunderbird’s victory lane in
2011 when OCRS came thundering through in April.
The
Slader’s will be offering free snow cones for the kids along with
multiple prize give-a-ways. There will also be a bicycle race for the
youngsters as well. This will be a BYOB event (Bring Your Own Bike). Hot
laps begin at 7:30pm with racing action starting at 8pm.
