BUDWEISER OVAL NATIONALS RADICAL SATURDAY FORMAT CHANGE!
(Perris, CA, August 10, 2011) Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian has announced a radical change to the Saturday night portion of the 16th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals. Instead of C, B, and A main events, this year's final night will include qualifying, four heat races, two B mains and the championship A main event.
"Over the years fans have raved that the Thursday and Friday night portions of the Budweiser Oval Nationals have provided the best racing they have seen all season long," Kazarian said. "They have asked that we go to the same style format for Saturday night and we are going to do what they are asking for. The new Saturday format along the addition of the "Legends of Ascot Match Race" on Friday night should make this year's edition of the Oval Nationals the best one ever."
As in past years, the Thursday and Friday night portion of the Oval Nationals will include qualifying, five heat races and C, B and A main events. "The top eight drivers in points after the first two nights will be seeded directly into Saturday's 40-lap Oval Nationals championship feature," Kazarian stated. "Everybody else will have to qualify, runs heats and possibly the B main events on Saturday to get into the A main."
On Saturday, the top 32 qualifiers will contest four, ten-lap, eight car heat races. The top two finishers from each heat will go into the A main and the others will go into one of the two B main events. Cars qualifying 33rd and back will automatically go into one of the B mains. Each B main will be 12-laps and the top four finishers from each B will also make the main event.
"Fans have clamored for us to do this for quite some time," Kazarian stated. "The clawing and the scratching for the Saturday transfer spots is going to be incredible. Just like it has been on Thursday and Friday over the years. We are very excited and cannot wait for November to get here."
The entire format for this years Budweiser Oval Nationals is available at the end of this release.
The Budweiser Oval Nationals, America's most prestigious traditional Sprint Car race, will take place on November 3rd, 4th and 5th and will be a full points paying event for the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car and the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series'. In addition, it attracts other top stars from around the nation.
In addition to the 410 Sprint Cars, the popular California Lightning Sprint Cars will also be in action on Friday and Saturday.
Media, attached to this release is a photo of one of the favorites in this year's Oval Nationals. Three-time Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car champion Mike Spencer of Temecula, California. Please feel free to use the photo and please give photo credit to Doug Allen.

I love this format. Love it.
The only problem is the fact someone can show up on Saturday and make the show. If each Semi only has 12-14 cars, it won't be that difficult for a driver to make the show. Yes, passing 10-12 cars isn't easy but it's a hell of a lot easier than coming through the C and starting at the back of a 24 car Semi. Points should be locked in after Friday, no Saturday only entries.

I don't see how this is any different from last year. If you didn't show on Thurs/Fri you didn't have many points going into Saturday. Low/no points people started in the back of the first lettered main. What's different now?

Scott,
The only problem I see with your new format is that on saturday there is no points to be earned it just directly effects the Big A main with heat races being FULLY inverted from the qualifying on saturday, you might see some guys sandbagging so they can start up front in there heat since the top 2 in heats go straight to the saturday "A". Its basically penalizing someone who qualifies fast on saturday night. A 4 invert would be more effective and fair i believe. Good luck with the show.

It probably depends on the car count. If there are 70 entries like the good-old-days then sandbagging shouldn't be an issue because drivers will be going as fast as possible to ensure being one of the 32 that make the heats.

Doug, sandbagging is usually an issue. Even for a regular program some drivers will sandbag. Drivers will be earning points on Saturday for the heats and the B mains. Also, there will be qualifying points available (if you sandbag, you take your chance away of getting any). The transfering drivers from the heats on Saturday will be lined up behind the seeded drivers according to their accumalated points from the three nights. Same with the B mains.
Say we get 60 entries. We are going to lose a handful by Saturday and eight will get seeded through. So say we have 45 drivers who qualify on Saturday. That means 13 drivers are going straight to the B main. Kind of a slim margin for error to sandbag and take the risk of not getting into a heat race. Especially in an evenly matched field. Race results from last years Oval Nationals are not on the reults page, but two years ago, on the first night, the difference from fast time to 32nd was 0.932. On the second night it was only 0.748. Some may sand bag, but it will be very risky.

I don't see how this is any different from last year. If you didn't show on Thurs/Fri you didn't have many points going into Saturday. Low/no points people started in the back of the first lettered main. What's different now?
|
Rich, the difference is last year you had to come from the back of the C (Roughly starting tenth or better, depending on car count) and then the back of the Semi (Starting 21st or worst) to make the feature. This year chances are the worst anyone will start is 12th in a Semi on Saturday night. So instead of passing 6-8 cars in the C to transfer and then 12+ to transfer in the Semi, you only have to pass 10-12 cars in one race this year.
Based on last years car count of 50 cars, the Semis would only be 17 cars deep and that's if everyone showed on Saturday.
