Great video! For someone like me who didn't live in Knoxville at the time this is a great perspective or what the track looked like then. A couple of questions: 1. Was the pace car a speical deal that year? 2. Where was the score board located?

There was no scoreboard. They had a chalkboard. And that roadrunner was the regular Knoxville raceway pace car. It was badass. Wally Price told me that he took it out on the highway and at about 110 mph it felt like the front end was starting to lift off the ground like he was getting ready to take flight. Man those were the good old days. The days when Sammy could get somebody else to have bad luck.

That sounds like Chris Economacki on the PA.

Guys,

This and the other videos for the early 80's Knoxville Nats came to me from David Smith Jr of oklahomatidbits.com. Just like Shane Carson, David has been responsible for getting the vids to me just as much, and he's been very quiet about it. There's been a lot of stuff I never thought I'd get to see, come through here. So, we got a ways to go before we shut this party down.

There is one, maybe 2 more I have to post on 1980's Knoxville for now, before it's time to move onto the next batch. !984 is coming and of course 1985. We don't have 1986, and I think Ritchie has posted 1987. David sent in a 1987 Nats tape, which I'll check and see if it has anything new to add to the version charlesintestine added last year. If it has anything new from there, I'll be sure to post it too.

Wait until you see the 1985 OkC USAC vs NCRA show! Great shots from the pits! Dean Martin and Pat Sullivan took the time to get some film that ....well....you'll want to see it. Especially if you're a Ricky Hood fan.

Does anybody else think that the track looked a lot wider back then?? It looks like the "push off lane" in 1 & 2 now was the bottom groove back then! Same for 3 & 4 .. seems the bottom groove was a lot lower on the track than it is now. If I'm correct (and not seeing things!), does anybody know when the push-off lane was added in turns 1 & 2? I've been going there since the mid-80s and always remember it being there. Cool videos... thanks to everybody that a hand in getting them posted!!
