Big J Report Presented By DeBerg
Concrete
All Star Circuit of Champions (29
Cars)
Welcome Mat
The All Stars bring their six regulars, King Tyler Walker is back for a second
year, Scott Winters is back in 410 action, Austen Wheatley back from his WoO
trip to the east, mix in both McCarl’s and you have a smorgasbord of potential
winners.
MIA
The Dud lost his road map out at Lernerville (sorry Super Chuck), while Kerry
Madsen stayed in Knoxville unfortunately.
VIP
Savage is back in town, Bosma24 carries a big jinx over his head back to the
track, DeBerg comes over for a few visits along with The Champ, JJ breaks his
cherry, the Big Game Crew, and a few other stragglers set up for big section on
a hot and humid Sunday night. There was even a Lusk Racing sighting on the
midway along with BB The Puker!
Time Trials
Terry McCarl, driving Lynton Jeffrey’s backup car with a #24 wing, sets the
quick time around the 3/10 mile track with a lap of 11.361 seconds. It was the
first time he stepped in the car and didn’t even have enough time to throw in
his own seat as they put the car together during the day. The rest of the top
18 hitting the heat race inversion: Jeffrey, Mark Dobmeier, Cap Henry, Tim
Shaffer, Travis Whitney, Gregg Bakker, Austin McCarl, Dale Blaney, Walker,
Bryan Dobesh, David Gravel, Greg Wilson, Wheatley, Winters, Robby Wolfgang,
Pete Miller III, and Jody Rosenboom.
McCarl would also pick up a $1,000
bonus from 212 The Boiling Point as they sponsored the quick time award for the
evening.
Heat Races
I apologize for not having any notes, but I decided it was a fun thing to not
save what I had going on my new Droid 3 phone before sending out a few text
messages after the second heat race. My bad, it won’t happen again, but it will
save me a few minutes in writing this guy.
Anyways, the heat race action was
actually pretty good as the track was very racy for the three 8-lap heat races.
Especially when you compare it to the usually single-file trains we see when
the big series come to town. Lots of action throughout the top six transfer
spots. The top six qualifiers all qualified for the ‘A’ and would draw for the
dash during intermission.
Here are the heat results stolen
from the All Star’s site:

Finish: 13, 04, 24, 12, 83, 16
Notes: Jeffrey stopped on the warmup lap allowing McCarl to move up a row on
the start after a young fan drew the 6 spot for him. Dobmeier barely squeezed
by Henry to snag the lead coming off the top of turn two at the start. Henry
hung with him throughout the 6-lapper, but would settle for the outside pole.
Shaffer threatened Jeffrey as well, but could not execute a pass as the top was
the fastest way around.
Lusk Racing B Feature (Not the Last
Chance Showdown):

Notes: Henry beat Dobmeier to the backstretch using the cushion
with Dobmeier settling in for second. Shaffer quickly asserted himself as a
threat moving up to fourth on lap two off the bottom of turn two and a lap
laterr into third past McCarl. Henry had stretched out to a pretty big lead for
Huset’s standards by drilling the cushion all the way around the track and
would hit traffic on lap five. That is when Blaney had moved up from his
row five starting position flirting with the top five. There was traffic everywhere
for the leader on lap seven with Dobmeier closing on him in a hurry as
well. Henry was able to clear a few lappers and put some space on Dobs
until lap eleven when Dobmeier came a-coming again. The top five was all
up on the cushion looking for mistakes in traffic to gain spots. That first
mistake came when Dobmeier drilled the backstretch wall coming out of turn two
on lap twelve to cause a caution. Dobs was done for the night.
The lap twelve restart had Henry
pacing Shaffer, McCarl and Blaney back to the green with a ton of lappers
thrown between the top five as they held their spots. Shaffer cleared the one
lapper between himself and the leader in the first corner and set his sights on
the young gun in the lead. But Henry opened up another huge lead until he hit
traffic a couple laps later around the bullring.
Shaffer would gain his ground in
traffic, only to see Henry split a couple of lappers at the halfway point.
Shaffer, the reigning Knoxville Nationals Champion, would not be fazed and would
temporarily take the lead with 12 to go off the bottom of turn two. Henry
wasn’t having any of that as he took it right back coming off of turn four to
officially lead the lap. Meanwhile, McCarl – the all-time feature winner at the
track – caught the front duo as the track began to lay rubber off the top of
turn four with about 10 to go. Rubber was laid all the way around the track
with seven to go up on the high side and looked like it would end as a snoozer,
but that was not the case!
The top three were nose to tail in
traffic with five to go. Shaffer threw a textbook slidejob on Henry with
four to go, only to have Henry get back by and lead the lap at the flagstand
while McCarl closed even more as they crossed the stripe. Then, with two to go,
the bottom finally came in for McCarl off of turn two, who had the wing back the entire time since the Dobs caution . He would slide past the
two leaders down the backstretch, and gave Henry a slider in three and
four as the white flag was displayed to the top guys. T-Mac would hang on
to lead that important lap, for a popular victory at the track he has been
booed at vehemently over the past two decades!
The win was McCarl’s second of the
year at Huset’s, 86th career 410 win at the track, second All Star
win here, and 14th career with the All Star series. The win
also paid $5,000 to win and came in his best friend Jeffrey’s car with DeBerg
Concrete and 212 Boiling Point on the wing. Henry was a couple car lengths
behind at the checkers, Shaffer in third in the CH Motorsports #83, Blaney was
fourth in the TI22 Performance #2, and Walker closing out the top-five in Keen
Motorsports #17. Rosenboom was the hard charger coming from 18th
to 10th.

Savage Joke of the Night Presented
by Car Wash Mike
"Tip of the Cap Henry tonight.
The kid was fast, but in the end, you just gotta tip your cap to the all-time
feature winner in T-Mac."
This ‘N That
*Holy cow, what was thought would be
a snoozer due to the track conditions turned out to be the best feature
witnessed thus far on the year for yours truly (unfortunately missed
Knoxville’s great features the night before). T-Mac shows that he still has it,
and it comes aboard a car he had never sat in before until the day of the show
– and didn’t even have one of his seats in it. Not a bad night collecting 6
grand for the win and getting quick time. And all of it comes nearly a year to
the date of him shattering his leg due to a mud clump with the All Stars up
here at Huset’s. Great victory for him heading into the Nationals.
*How about that Justin Boese guy
coming out of retirement? He is now 2 for 2 in the win column since dusting off
the crew shirt with the McCarl’s on the year. And the Bosma Jinx is put to an
emphatic end as well! Terry even started the night off saying he doesn’t
believe in jinxes after setting quick time in his interview. First time all
year that Terry looked like the old Terry up here and it couldn’t have come at
a better time!
*Gotta give props to Bakker and Dave
Lunstra for providing, yet, another phenomenal race track – and the track even
took rubber with about 10 to go! The best race of the year was given to the
good sized crowd, and will leave them wanting more with a WoO show and another
All Star show the Sunday after the Nationals. The best thing the Rubins did was
give these guys the ‘go’ to come in and do the track prep.
*But not everything was peachy at
the “Home of the Professionals” on the night. The scoreboard timer didn’t work
for another week leaving damn near everyone clueless during time trials. Then
the lights went out for a good 20 minutes after intermission. And the
microphone was acting shady at best for driver interviews due to the high
humidity. Not their best showing with such a big show and crowd on hand.
*Thank you to 212 for putting up the
extra bonus money for time trials, the right rears for a few drivers if they
won the ‘A’, and also the free beer afterwards if one of those drivers would
win – and they did with T-Mac taking the victory. Mark and Katie continue
to support the racing community in any way they can. They deserve a much
deserved 10-day break down in Southern Iowa.
*Cap Henry was damn impressive in
his first ever visit to the bullring. He wasn't scared to put the car up on the
wall near the enclosed concrete wall. The kid has a future, especially on the
bullrings like Huset's while he continues to gain some laps around the country
looking for his first All Star victory.
*Whose ready for Knoxville which has
come out of nowhere? The few days at work will be torturous but we will
definitely be coming in hot on Thursday and Friday (for me). Big thanks to
DeBerg for the accommodations down there, and it will be one for the ages!
*All-in-all it was a great night on
the track even if it ended rather late. The Report will be going into
hibernation for a few weeks as we will leave the writing to Bill W down at his
home track. But we will hopefully be back the Sunday after the Nationals with
the next All Star show at Huset’s that pays 5 grand to win again. Until then,
stop on by and introduce yourself, and hopefully raise a glass and/or shot
glass in the air in the name of the best 10 days in racing.
