Bergman to return to site of first victory

Andrew Kunas, NSCS Publicist

SNOHOMISH, Wash. – This Sunday, Seth Bergman will return to Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon, where he won his first sprint car main event last September and put the Northwest sprint car scene on notice.

Then just a month ago, Seth Bergman’s name was everywhere. The 19-year-old from Snohomish, Wash. was just announced as the first entrant into August’s Brodix Tournament of Champions at the legendary Knoxville Raceway in Iowa.

Twenty-five different 360 sprint car series from the United States and around the world, including the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series, will be represented in the Sunday, August 5 invitational event and it was Bergman of all people who was announced first.

“It’s cool, having a lot of people seeing that,” Bergman said following the announcement. “It helps when you’re trying to get your name out there. (Knoxville) is the Daytona of dirt tracks. It’ll be stout competition.”

Bergman, however, has admittedly struggled so far this season aboard his father Steve Bergman’s No. 23a Eagle with a Whitman motor. Just days after Knoxville’s press release, Bergman finished a disappointing 16th in the inaugural NSCS event at Grays Harbor Raceway. Bergman had also struggled when racing at Skagit Speedway in weekly competition.

When the NSCS visited Skagit for two nights of racing earlier this month, Bergman finished 14th in the Friday main event. He then bounced back and scored a solid eighth place finish on Saturday, which bumped him up to ninth in the points. Taylor Malsam, three spots up the standings in sixth, is only 16 points ahead of Bergman.

One thing Bergman has going for him are his efforts in heat races. He has transferred his Powder Coating Inc. and Corridor Electric-sponsored machine to the A-Main in all NSCS events so far. None of the top four drivers in the standings – Roger Crockett, Travis Rutz, Evan Funk, and Mitch Olson – can say they have done it.

Bergman’s last race in Oregon was a happy one as he won the Northern Sprint Tour event at Cottage Grove on September 16. The same could be said for his last visit to Southern Oregon Speedway near Medford in July, where he surprised everyone with a strong third place finish in last year’s Speed Week event. Bergman will also get to return to that track when the NSCS visits on Saturday, May 26.

The NSCS kicks off its Memorial weekend swing through Oregon on Friday with a show at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore. before heading to Medford and then Cottage Grove.

Bergman expects to race in the Tournament of Champions in August still, but says he is looking for sponsor help to make it to the event, which has drawn around a hundred cars in the past.
