Just a heads up for anyone that is staying in Newton (north of I-80) or coming from the north down highway 14 thru Newton.
Also westbound I-80 people will feel this too if they get off at the 164 exit.
Look for ALL off ramps at exit 164 I-80 to be delayed I would guess too.
The southbound highway 14 bridge across I-80 is going to be closed from Aug 8 until like December ... might want to allow some extra time for congestion and the detour.
Those affected will use the other lane of highway 14 (northbound) but with all the traffic at this time of year it might be wise to give yourself some extra time.
Why in the world would the IA DOT not have waited just one more week is beyond me ... like it would matter one way or the other.
Westbound I-80 drivers could use the 168 exit and go the back way to highway 14 (either past the Riverview Prison or the old Fenner Lunch road) but if you aren't that familiar with that route it can be confusing.

Coming from the east (Quad Cities) where do you recommend I exit?

Get off at exit 168 and take (cough ...cough) Rusty Wallace Dr. to your left or south and follow the signs to Clement's Folly ... er .... The Iowa Speedway.
Keep going past the race track (now and any other time ....heh ...heh ...)
R.W. Dr. then turns into South 20th Ave East around the Newton Airport (you will be running right next to I-80 on the south side or meeting the eastbound I-80 traffic) and it 'T's maybe 3/4 of a mile past the Newton Airport into county road S74.
Take a left or south on S74 and go about 3 1/2 miles to So. 60th Ave East it is the SECOND paved road to your right (should be a sign that says 'Prison' or Iowa 14 or some such thing with an arrow pointing right) turn right (west) on So. 60th Ave and you will go maybe 3 miles and it will 'T' into hwy 14 and take a left or south on 14 and you are about 3 miles south of Newton on your way to Knoxville.
These directions are ALL paved and good roads.
You might want to use your gps (if available) it or mapquest and print it as an alternative.
Hope this helps .... got a feeling it is gonna be a mess at times ....

Iowa DOT road work map. Zoom in and out and click on the icons of construction to see what is going on

This is rather silly timing with the Nationals and the Iowa State Fair going on.

1 week ... just 1 week ... and it would have been a no big deal ... but ..common sense and goverment are 2 words that don't go together ... in Iowa or a lot of places.

The mile long bridge (between Knoxville and Monroe) on IA 14 will be one lane that week as well (scheduled to start construction August 4th), so allow yourself some time for that detour as well.

So, what you all are saying is prepare myself for an agonizing drive no matter what route I choose?

If you leave for the track a little early you probably won't have much delay. 5-10 minutes waiting for the pilot car. Heading back after the races when everyone leaves at the same time could get ugly. Still it could be worse...you could have went to a Nascar race and been bored to death for 3 hours then stuck in traffic 10 times as long. If it were me I'd hang out in the pits after the races and take in some of the fun for an hour or more, band every night under the grandstands, then head up 14. I think an alternate route is going to take you 20-30 minutes out of your way. You'll know more after Wednesday night to see how bad it is. My 2 cents...

Coming from the east on I-80 get off at 173 (Kellogg) and take county road T22 south to Pella (follow the signs or gps/mapquest) and go to Knoxville from Pella across the dam.
DO NOT exceed the speed limit by 1 mph in Pella .... they love to nail non dutch out of towner's ... that is not a warning..that is a PROMISE !!!
Be very cautious going out of Pella any route to the dam ...it feels like it should be 45 or even 55 mph zone ..it is 35 mph and the Pella city limits go way past where you think.
This is Pella's Christmas time for the city coffers ... many of the 'Pellaites' hate (not all ...but many) Knoxville and race fans.

The DOT has been informed by the Sheriff's office about the Nationals. I don't think they'll be working on it that week.

"Pellaites"? I always thought it was "Pellacans". LOL. He's right though, watch your speed. If your staying in Oskaloosa or going to the race there is always a State Trooper patroling Hwy 92 also.

I used to have some customers in Pella, I'd rather go to a dentist that only had rusty tools than drive through there and cough up any money. I'll take my chances with the construction along with my Scott county plates.

You can take Hwy 92 from Muscatine all the way to Knoxville BUT it looks like about 15 miles of 1 lane road with a Pilot car between Sigourney to Oskaloosa.
Looks like your screwed either way!
I-80 has a lot of construction around Iowa City & Cedar Rapids also, A lot of lane changes and Very Narrow double lanes due to the concrete barriers! Sucks even in a car when you get an 18 wheeler next to you let alone a Camper.

So my Ace in the hole isn't really an ace, I'll just leave 25 minutes earlier every day. I am very familiar with the 80 fiasco around Iowa City, been dealing with it all summer going to baseball tourneys.
