Zomer Scores Another Electrifying Win in Last Corner at Knoxville!

by Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, July 30, 2011 – Dusty Zomer brought a packed crowd to its feet on Saturday night with a last corner pass of Tyler Walker to record his fourth win of the season, and ninth in his career at the Knoxville Raceway on Candi's Flowers Night. Defending 360 champion, Clint Garner, took his third win of the season and the tenth in his career in that division.

After a spin by AJ Moeller and a run-in with the wall sidelined Austin Johnson, Zomer put Derek Ingalls' #91 out front early from his starting spot on the pole. Another spin by Moeller with a lap in the books sidelined the rookie, and Zomer found himself leading Dustin Selvage, Walker, Robby Wolfgang and Lynton Jeffrey back to green flag racing.

Walker quickly moved into second and began stalking the leader in the Jesse Keen #17K. The California native would ride the cushion to the lead completing lap seven. Mark Dobmeier, who had won the B after extensive repairs were done to his sprinter after a hard crash in his heat with quick-timer, Bronson Maeschen, had moved up to sixth by the halfway point. The Grand Forks, North Dakota driver moved into fifth by lap 13, overtaking Selvage, who would retire two laps later.

Walker built a half straightaway lead with five to go, but Zomer began to reel him in, using the low side of the raceway. He was within three car lengths taking the white flag and continued to pursue Walker into turn four, where he pulled in front on the low side and made himself wide to take the checkers.

"I think traffic helped me a little, but it was experience too," said Zomer from Victory Lane. "I run here weekly, and if Tyler had the last lap to run again, he'd do it differently. My hat is off to him for coming in here and running strong. I think we put on a good show for the fans! I hope everyone enjoyed it. We were strong and never gave up. I hope it continues in the Nationals."

Following the Brandon, South Dakota native were Walker, Brian Brown, Jeffrey and Kevin Swindell. Hard-charger, Dobmeier, Kerry Madsen, Danny Lasoski, Austin McCarl and Don Droud Jr. rounded out the top ten.

Ricky Logan, Kerry Madsen, Ian Madsen and Brown won the four entertaining heats. In addition to the Dobmeier/Maeschen crash, Ben Gregg got upside down on the backstretch when something broke after finishing third in his heat. He would not return. JD Johnson suffered the same fate during the B main. No one was injured.

In the 360 feature, it was a battle of Sioux Falls natives. Gregg Bakker shot out from his pole position following a spin by quick-timer, Tasker Phillips. Bakker's maintained his lead through a caution with three laps in the books. Ryan Anderson stopped in turn four with a folded front end.

Bakker led Dennis Moore Jr., Jonathan Cornell, Garner and Casey Friedrichsen back to green. Two laps later, Garner had moved into third, and by lap 13, had worked his way past Moore into second.

Bakker appeared to have things in control on the white flag lap, but while he was in turn three, eighth running, Jack Dover, slowed in turn two bringing caution. That brought a green, white, checker finish with Bakker leading Garner, Moore, Billy Alley and Cornell.

Garner used a good restart to circle his fellow Sioux Falls driver for the win in the Fluth #40 powered by Parker Engines. Following the lead pair were Moore, Alley and Chad Humston. Cornell, Friedrichsen, Oregon visitor Roger Crockett, Nate Van Haaften and David Hall rounded out the top ten.

Garner was complimentary of Bakker in Victory Lane. "It was good to race with Gregg Bakker. I know how he works. I knew exactly what his plan was. He had a good thing going, and usually he doesn't change it. This is the third time we've won on Candi's Flowers night. We did it, and we're up here again."

Ryan Roberts, Larry Ball Jr., Josh Higday and Dover took the heats, while Tony Shilling grabbed the B main. For the second week in a row, young Jordan Boston was the hard-charger in the A main, passing nine cars.

The 21st Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals kick off Southern Iowa Sprintweek this Thursday night, August 4 at the Knoxville Raceway! Tickets still remain!

Time trials aren't even fair when you allow Bronson to go out that early...

Great night of racing, the first two heat races were awesome. Good features, can't wait to head out.

While that was a great night of racing, the stands were no where even remotely close to being packed.

That would explain the ridiculous price to watch the Nationals on the internet for 20 bucks a night...

Congrats to DZ on the win! Literally came out of nowhere with a few to go after getting passed by Walker early on. Just wish Zomer was closer in points but Twin Feature night killed him (as it has to many others).

Race fans, give it up for the Midwest's best local talent, Dusty Zomer!

How do they determine A-main lineup? I see Zomer timed 15th and started on the pole.

Super Chuck thinks you're on to something there. Nothing against Zomer, I like the kid and he has been bad fast, but he's been getting kissed on the d!ck with the inverts. He is catching the same breaks as Lasoski was earlier in the year, but yet nobody is calling foul and accusing Knoxville of favortism. Instead he is heralded as...and I quote, "the Midwest's best local talent". The last four weeks the kid has started 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 3rd in the features. Just sayin...

Wrecked cars don't run in the main

Invert 12

Easier to keep track of if you are there

Easy fix don't buy it

If you don't want to pay 20 bucks probably no chance of you being there right

Big J thinks what goes around, comes around when it comes to the invert. Simply the law of averages. As Burgandy likes to say, "its science." Not a bad night for having the backup motor in, either.

Quick question Chuck, did you buy Lasoski a road map for tonight or is he staying home like usual?

A great night of racing! You would have thought the heats were for the Nationals instead of a weekly show. As far as Doug Clark not flagging fairly, I know there were 3,4 races called back for jumping but I honestly did not notice if he sent anybody back on any of those, When Terry jumped I noticed! Was it because it was Terry McCarl? Maybe, but what I did notice was it was not anymor blatant of a jump than any of the others. And Bill as usual a very good report but as I expected would happen, the 3rd responder to your blog commented on your definition of "packed"! I know there was a ton of people there, the lines at the vendors were long, the cheers from the crowd were exeptionally loud from the very few that were in attendance! What were you thinking Bill! (sarc.-int.) Last but not least Awesome Job Zoom Zoom & Clint Garner on the W's & Mark Dobmeir for the charge from the back.

I wasn't there and did not see the crowd, but you have to remember the grandstand capacity is designed for 1 week a year. If it was 1/4 full that's still 5,000 people. That's not a bad crowd really.

Greg Bakker got one of the most royal ram jobs I've ever seen at Knoxville. Lucky break for Clint Hessmer though. The 410 class may have been down a few years ago, but the races these guys are putting on this year are incredible. That was a very good crowd and it was exciting when thousands of people all stood up at once to watch that final pass in turn four.

Last night was an absolutely superb night of racin, of course so has the rest of the year. When you find yourself saying "That was the best race of the year!" Every week on the ride home, you know you are attending the greatest dirt track in the world. Thank you Knoxville!

BJ--Nah, he don't need Super Chuck to buy him a map...he knows the way. But ask yourself, if you're running your own deal...would you drive 860 miles (round trip) for the Husets payout? Dude's runnin' an '05 Mopar with 23 nights on it and saving his fresh bullet for the Nats. Not making excuses for the guy, just being realistic about it. By the looks of your car counts, most won't make a 500 mile trip let alone 800+. But keep hammering him every week on your report, it's cool. Super Chuck enjoys reading it every week.

It's an All-Star show at Husets tonight, hence why big j asked if he was coming...
