Hi Steve,
There is a "Non-Wing Sprint Car Subculture" in Indiana that most West Coast Racers and Fans don't know about.
A couple of Kevin Eckert quotes from his 07/06/11 Gas 'Em Up City on the Road to the Hewitt Blog.
1. "Gas City was wonderful I was reminded that the measure of any region or specific speedway is not
its quality of World of Outlaws visit or USAC appearance but rather, the value of what is considered
"Regular" fare. Now many regions claim the finest weekly programs but I've seen 'em all and Indiana
is Number One for combining unlimited un-winged sprint cars on short, generally wet clay. Purses
are low but so are expenses, making Indiana almost immune to car shortages."
2. " Want another reason why Indiana is superior? There are no rules. Sprint cars can use big blocks,
nitromethane, nitrous oxide, traction control, titanium or whatever."
Steve, would you consider going to Indiana's version of "Open Competition" sprint car racing at VRP?
Thanks,
Don Flanders

Hi Don,

I follow what goes on in the Midwest and back East, and I certainly Agree with you that Indiana is the Hot Bed of Sprint Car Racing, so something is working!! Just today I had a nice talk with Larry Kemp at Eldora, a Promoter I truly respect. Of course Eldora is certainly in a different league than we are, and their ancillary Income streams are much higher with what Tony Stewart brings to the Sponsorship table. I am absolutely open to run what ever it takes to have a good Car Count, the Race Teams Happy, and of course a Good Show for the fans......The way I see it (New to Sprint Car Promoting, but 30 years of Promoting Events.) We are in a unique situation here in So. Calif, as ASCOT set the bar so high with such great 410 Sprint Car Racing, the real Hard Core Sprint Car Fans that support Sprint Cars here are 410 Fans......Ventura Raceway a great Track with a Great Promoter Jim Naylor went the 360 route, and they have a steady Car Count, and good Shows, but lack Big Attendance.....Perris Raceway the Gem of the West Coast is a hard core USAC 410 Track, that has a great grand fathered in USAC Package.....Don't get me wrong! Perris earned that right as Donnie has always supported USAC and 410 Racing, and has paid the price over the years, and deserves to be the Premium 410 Track.......I would love to get 30 cars a race, but we are limited on Purse being on a Fairgrounds with No Food or Beer Income.......I feel very fortunate to get 15-20 Sprint Cars for our Shows.......So to directly answer your question!!!!!! I really don't know if your format (Which I think is Great...Run what you Brung) would work here in So. Calif. But I would certainly like to hear what the Racers and Fans think on this Subject!!!!! If the Teams wanted it, I sure would try doing one!!!!! I just think this is die Hard 410 Country, that is so costly already tht if you add Nitro (Which I love) into the mix, the cost would just be greater. (But it sure would be cool seeing 6 foot Flames coming out the headers!!!!!!!!!

Steve,
Thanks for the well thought out respectful reply.
I think Kevin was making the point that its actually cheaper to run a no rules deal and I agree with him.
Having talked to car owners, drivers and professional engine builders over the last few years I firmly
believe that a winning Victorville "Run What You Brung" engine could be built for about one half of what a
first class professional 410 cost.
I would also like to hear what the Racers and Fans think about the subject.
I would be willing to finance a test engine if there is any demand for it.
Don

Don, If you have an engine, I know a fine young man who could use a few more HP at the Victorville shows.

Hi Brett,
What a coincidence, just the other day I read the fine Norm Bogan article about Brody in FLAT OUT Magazine.
If there is a demand to see an engine that really does address the economics of sprint car racing, your team certainly would be high on the list to run it.

Thanks for the plug Don.

Everyone should get a copy of Flat Out Magazine and read the article on Brody. Thanks to Norm Bogan for writing such a nice piece.

If I can play the proud parent for a minute, Brody does an excellent job maintaining and running his team within the budget he has to operate. He really hopes he can find a way to get a 410 by Fall, so he can run the Oval Nationals.

We plan to support Steve as much as possible. VRP is a great place and they will get the track figured out. We are really looking forward to the 360 Open Show on August 13.

There is no question that in the early day's of CRA there was a big influence by the hot rod mentality that we grew up in at that time in southern California. Part of that hot rod influence and excitement died with the 410, and was hit another blow with the off the shelf parts, chassis, etc. I've lived back and forth between AZ and Cali and it was very much the same over here, but I know more than a few who's eyes light up at the mere mention of the words "open comp" these day's.. A true open comp where inovation and engine building skill's can be put to the test.

There is no way we can get it all back, but we sure can put the word "hot" back into the equation again, and with less $$. Though most of us appreciate what Kevin and Benji have done over here to keep sprint car racing alive, there are a lot of people in the sprint car community that would like to see it open up somehow.

Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

Don..I have a few questions ..but first a comment about VV..it's about as close to outlaw run what you brung as it gets..not alot of pesky rules..and to my knowledge no one has every been DQ'd and never has a racer protested after the event..raced there starting in '96 and never saw a car pumped.afuel sample taken and with an open tire rule no problem there..never saw a car scaled 'cause there is no weight rule so easily as good as indy tracks ......now what motor do you suggest...the schatz- shaver deal.....ask steve maybe he'll give you a waiver-let Roa ring it out..heck maybe usac will give you a waiver to test it with usac/cra.For years you bring up this subject then you put a picture of some behemouth cast iron .wet sump boat anchor that will never work in a sprint car and get anywhere near 1200 to 1300 lbs weight you'd need to compete..please enlighten me,,thank you...Dan

Hi Dan,

I've never ever said to use a Big Block in all these past years. Why would you want to run one if you can get around 500 cid out of a small block? Not necessarily saying big inches
is the way to go but like Fish says, if you allow the real hot rodders back into the game and "Ingenuity in Action" is the new paradigm, you might see some really interesting
engine concepts develop.
What would I run? Won't say right now, but if there is enough interest and it can be worked out by all parties involved to run Victorville legally with the engine you might be
surprised by what you see.
Thanks,
Don

Our next 410/360 Open Show is Sat. Aug. 6th!!!!!! I am very open to making it "Run what you Brung" No Rules other than safety of course....Hell, you want to run Nitro mix in a 360, I don't care (Bring your own Grease sweep) I think the common goal of Racers and Promoters is to keep Cost Down so they can Race for the Purse this economy has served up....My roots is Drag Racing, started going to the Drags in 64....It always blew me away how creative Tuners were with the 392's.....Then the Elephant Motor took over, and look at them now....The key is being cost effective!!! But we all know Horsepower means $$$$. Our Track (When Track is right) is the perfect place for "Outlaw" Run what you brung. Some 360's right now are pretty impressive running with some of the best 410's......"VRP" is certainly game, with the Drivers support!!

Sorry Dan there's no way to build a completely new engine by Aug 6th, but the October 1st "Sprints(Open)" date would be realistic
Don't know what car to run it in yet but as I said the Roa's car, if they were interested would be high on the list.

Brody will not be at the August 6, VRP race due to a previous committment.

We were really bummed that Steve pulled the plug on the 360 Open Show on August 13, but it is his sandbox. The 360 Open was a great race last year and Brody was looking forward to running it again this year.

We'll try it again on October 1.

Steve,
I don't see any real interest at this time by the racers or fans in seeing a different type of engine run here on the West Coast.
But, To make things interesting for the Aug 6th show, I'll donate an extra $1,000 to the winner of the race and another $500 to the
highest finishing 360.

Victorville has never in the past 5 seasons had ANY rules for Sprints. It has always been an open show. With the exception of a few 360 only venues and even those were only restricted to cast iron 360 cubic inch. Oh wait, for those who might remember i did implement a no adjustable shock rule for a few races.

Steve did that to help me. Even if it only brings 1 more car and 2 fans (I am sure it will bring more), I appreciate his effort to work with other tracks.

Just a "by the way"...Don Flanders is serious about his $$ donation... he promised $500.00 to the winner of the Walt James Last Man Standing Trophy Dash and has already sent me the $$ in crisp new $100.00 bills.
