Race of Champions Replaces Scrambles on Friday Night of Nationals!
(Bill W) July 16, 2011 – An exciting announcement surrounding the Friday night format of the 51st Annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals finds a program change. A $60,000 Race of Champions will be run as a substitute for the Scramble format used for several years on Friday night.
2010 410 track and series champions are eligible for the 20-lap event that will pay a $60,000 purse, with $10,000 paid to the winner and $1,000 to start. In addition, all former Knoxville Raceway 410 track champions and all former Knoxville Nationals champions are eligible. Sixteen champions are already pre-entered for the Nationals and will be eligible to compete in this race. A "reverse draw" involving all competitors will line up the event.
Track and series champions not yet entered in the Nationals will also be eligible with their pre-entry and participation in the 51st Annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals held August 10-13. Eighty pre-entries have been received thus far, with more coming in daily.
Those champions eligible for the event who have already entered the Nationals include:
1, Sammy Swindell, Germantown, TN – 1983 Nationals champ
D4, Danny Holtgraver, Pittsburgh, PA – Lernerville Speedway champ
6, Kraig Kinser, Bloomington, IN – 2005 Nationals champ
11, Steve Kinser, Bloomington, IN – 12-time Nationals champ
12, Lynton Jeffrey, Prairie City, IA – Huset's Speedway champ
15, Donny Schatz, Fargo, ND – 4-time Nationals champ
17B, Billy Balog, Eau Claire, WI – IRA champ
21, Brian Brown, Grain Valley, MO – 2-time Knoxville Raceway champ
21M, Brian Montieth, Phoenixville, PA – Lincoln Speedway champ
33, Danny Lasoski, Dover, MO – 8-time Knoxville track champ, 4-time Nationals champ
39, Greg Hodnett, Thomasville, PA – Williams Grove Speedway champ
45x, Johnny Herrera, Albuquerque, NM – 2-time Knoxville track champ
55, Terry McCarl, Altoona, IA – 6-time Knoxville track champ
57, Shane Stewart, Bixby, OK – Skagit Dirt Cup champ
83x, Tim Shaffer, Aliquippa, PA – Defending Nationals champ and All Stars champ

I love the concept for the race. I'm not a fan of getting rid of the scrambles though because the lineups for the top 50 cars are already set by Thursday night. Kind of takes away from the fun of the lineup being a mystery until after Fridays races. But the idea for a race of champions is fantastic. The true best of the best!

WHAT?!?
Race of champions? Why? Do it in addition of the scrambles. Don't get rid of them. Knoxville will soon regret this decision as it won't be popular with the fans. Just my 2 cents.

Skagit Dirt Cup Champion? That's not a track or series championship.

Sorry Shane Stewart and his fans, laudarevsonhunt got you knocked out of this race on a technicality. I can only hope that if Knoxville figures out ways to get other greats into this race (Kaeding for example), laud can figure out a way to get them out of the race.

I like the idea of the race but agree with others of keeping the scrambles. I like the mix up of the points but oh well give it a try I suppose.

One of the guys that works at the track put it in a different light for me this evening. Doing it this way will just make the drivers race that much harder for position on the qualifying nights, sure the surprise is gone, but this way the guy who is the best on his qualifying night and earned the most points will definitely get rewarded with the pole position, which wouldn't necessarily happen with Scrambles.
Plus this makes the format virtually the same as the 360 Nationals, which always delivers a fantastic show.
Bill, can we get a list of the races that can also qualify you for this race (Dirt Cup, King's Royal, etc?)

Sounds like the poor guys in the c and b and a scrambles are losing out on money. Typical Knoxville cater to the rich.

If we lived in a socialist republic I'd say to spread out the purse more to the C & B folks... but bonuses on my sales floor are for exceptional performance... not just showing up. Why should the biggest test of the year be any different?
Perform well... get paid. Simple.
I personally think too many people in life have the "I showed up... didn't do a thing... so pay me" mentality. Results are what you should be paid for.
Just an opinion.

I will check, but would guess Gold Cup (Meyers) and WG Open (Swindell) would be the only others. They are both already in...

Well, if you are going to make some kind of bizarre Knoxville Nationals = a sales job.analogy, do sales people on your floor have a $1,000 or $1,500 fuel bill, not to mention all the other expenses of racing for the week, to show up for four days? Seems really obvious IMO that less money going to teams beyond the A-main makes it more difficult for those teams to justify the expense of attending the Nationals each year. Why not really pay for performance and make the week $1 million to win on Saturday night and nothing for second? LOL. No one in the B or C-main is getting rich over the course of the week.
I would think most people would agree that one of the biggest thinga that makes the Nationals so great is how many cars are there. After all, fans have dozen of chances each year to see your average, run of the mill Outlaw show. I would hate to see the Nationals get to the point where it becomes just the Outlaws and the locals competing there each year because most others teams think the week is no longer worth the expense.

That was different due to the rainout on Friday night. They were running on Saturday afternoon.
As for another comment about guys running harder on their qualifying night because they know there won't be any scrambles. That argument holds no weight in my book. The qualifying night has always been important and guys never hold back. Everytime a guy in on the track at the nationals it is important. As fans, we just lost out on 3 races.
Why does Knoxville wait until 1 month prior to the nationals to make this announcement? Seems like there is something going on that only we can speculate about. I'd be really curious why they didn't think the scrambles were worth keeping!????????????
Are they keeping the "world challenge" race? My guess is that got cancelled too?

I am totally against getting rid of the scrambles. It is the only race where the qualifiers from two different nights go against each other. I have been to the nationals for 18 years. Get rid of the kele challange, not the scrambles. These are some of my favorite races of the week. We come to see the nationals, not the side shows. I agree spread the money out to the guys that don't make the A main. Why mess up the best program in all of sprint car racing. If you add this race I have no problem. We come to see racing but please don't cut the scrambles. It is so much fun to see the paper on saturday morning to see what the starting order for the A B and C mains are. I would rather watch the scrambles than the whole program that goes along with it. This is what makes friday. How many people care how the cars line up saturday night for the last half of the C D and E main. This is a bad mistake.

friday night has always been the worse of the four, the scrambles I think were started to try to bring more excitment, which it did a bit but have the scrambls actually changed the line up very much, i think this will not help friday nights show, but sure have no good idea what really would

So we only get to watch 16-18 cars run 1 race instead of watching 80-100 cars running several heats and or races? That's no bang for your buck. Thumbs down for not having the scrambles
