Other eating places in the area:
Hong Kong Buffett if you like Chinese on the square in Knoxville
Big John's BBQ and The Rib Shack both in Knoxville
Monarch's in Pella if you like a nice sit down place
Checkerboard in Pleasantville (don't think it has anything to do with racing)
If you're into pizza...there's Pizza Hut in Knoxville and Pizza Ranch in both Pella and Newton.
Rick's Sports Diner in Knoxville (new this year)
For breakfast there's the Coffee Connection on the square in Knoxville.

Too bad though, I think the State Fair doesn't start until Thursday into Nationals. Not a good over lap year.
Tasty Taco in Des Moines
Action Jack's Paintball near Newton
Lion's Den Adult Book store between Newton and Des Moines
Prarie Meadows race track casino

Lake Red Rock beaches are a great way to spend the day, or rent a boat at the marina.
FYI for all staying in Newton or coming in on Hwy 14 from the north, there will be some bridge work going on between Monroe and Knoxville. Sounds like maybe a couple pilot cars and one lane so plan to leave a little early.

depending on what bridge it is look up routes to maybe go around. Maybe getting to Monroe then on 63 then Pella then to Knoxville. I'll look it up to see if there is a 'scenic' route as to not have to wait for a pilot car. that crap sucks

It is the mile long. Says construction is expected until Aug 10th wed. of Nationals. only other way is to hit Pella and go over the damn.

If you're looking for something different, you might consider the Botanical Center in Des Moines and Trainland in Colfax. They are both cheap entertainment, especially if you're bringing the wife or younger kids.

If kids are involved the Boone railway. I remember suggesting that to a guy a few years ago and his kids went nuts over it.

Best lunch food in Knoxville by far is Swamp Fox downtown, just off of the square. Coffee Connection is good for breakfast.

Udders Steak House, only like 5 miles south of Knoxville. Get yourself a big fat steak, baked potato and enjoy the old memorbillia inside.

I always get a porkburger from the Pork producers next to Dingus in the metal building. That and HyVee breakfast buffet = yummy.

If you feel like making a drive there is Williamson Tavern 20 miles south of Knoxville. Home of the Papa Burger (16 oz of some of the best hamburger you will taste).

I recommend Peacetree Brewery in Knoxville. They have a taproom to hang out in and try all their beers or purchase a pint, the people there are really friendly, and they give tours too!
Swampfox in knoxville is a great little place with good prices.
We always hit up Godfather's Pizza one afternoon for the lunch buffet.
Pella is a fun town to wander around with some great meat markets and bakeries.
There are also some wineries within a half hour drive of Knoxville if you like to do wine tasting and tours there. (I recommend Tassel Ridge in Leighton)
El bait shop in Des Moines has over 100 beers on tap...and if there's a beer available, bottle or tap, they will have it!
Personally, I think the Dingus is gross....

Also, grab a couple beers and hit the camp grounds for a late night walkabout. There are always a lot of friendly people up and out having a good time, always willing to chat and share a beer or two with ya. We have met a lot of our knoxville camping friends that way.
