RODRIGUEZ LEADS WESTERN MIDGETS TO USA RACE PARK SATURDAY; LAST-LAP HANSEN PASS NEGATES FLOCK’S 53RD WIN AT VENTURA
Johnny Rodriguez of Elk Grove, Calif. holds a slim four-point lead over Matt Mitchell and Scott Pierovich as the USAC Western Midget Car Series heads for USA Race Park in Tucson, Ariz. Saturday night.
Rodriguez finished fourth in last Saturday night’s 30-lapper at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway, a race which featured a last-lap pass for the win.
Garrett Hansen of Manhattan Beach, Calif. got by Robby Flock to win at Ventura, thwarting Flock’s bid for his 53rd career series victory. Hansen drove the Hansen Welding/Fontana Beast and was trailed by Flock, Cory Kruseman, Rodriguez and Greg Bragg. Kruseman led the first 26 laps and Flock led 27-29.
Hansen has won USAC Western Midget races at the 3/8-mile dirt Tucson oval the past two years. Other USAC Midget winners there since the track debuted have been Chris Rahe, Nathan High and Brad Kuhn. Rahe currently ranks seventh in the 2007 series standings.
