Outstanding Event!
Perris Auto Speedway pulled out all the stops last night and truly turned a night of racing into an EVENT! I was reminded last night how I got hooked going to the 1/2 mile clay oval in 1996 and have sweat out many nights like last night.
First of all, the program had something for everyone...not just hardcore fans like me. My kids go because they enjoy the races and because we all enjoy spending time together. However, they're never excited to leave the comfort of our pool and have me drag them into the car and drive them to a miserably hot & dusty playground where grown men strap themselves into 900 horsepower beasts and try to prove who is tougher, sharper, and most brave. However, yesterday there was plenty of activities before and after the races that kept their minds off of the heat.
My boy had a blast collecting driver autographs, sliding on slides, riding a Nascar-themed train ride, changing a wheel on a kid-size race car mock-up with a real impact gun, and playing with his toy cars with friends in the stands. My daughter just enjoyed the refreshments, complimentary carnival games, the dance contest, the crazy hats and flags, and helping her little brother. They both were as excited as I was to see three skydivers land safely on the front stretch, followed by a fourth...a 70-year-old Veitnam Vet...flying our American Flag and nailing the bullseye perfectly, keeping 'Ol Glory from touching the clay. Both kids were tickled to be selected as imaginary "co-pilots"of a couple of fast sprint car drivers, which kept them awake during the main events (a first I think)!
With the kids occupied and happy, I was one content daddy, as I got to enjoy a dirt sprint car race with a full field, surrounded by long time friends. Although the dust did become an issue to some newbies sitting around me, I don't think it was out of hand. The race wasn't the best we've seen all year, but it had it's share of excitement...and heartbreak (i.e. Bluntach, Gutierrez, etc.). Spencer somehow seems to make a trip to Victory Circle look way too easy!
I realize that with the economy the way it is...and will continue to be for a while...it is ludicrous to expect this type of treatment every show. However, I think it was great for the sport to put 100% effort into last night's event and try to win over some fresh new faces. It was also a nice treat for us veteran fans that would have come regardless. There could have been nothing but a shade tree and I would have been there to see the races...maybe that's why I don't have nearly as many friends outside of the racing community...
Thanks guys for everything...your efforts were acknowledged by many and are appreciated!
