(June 28, 2011) – Independence Day is a long tradition of warm weather,
picnics at the lake and colorful fireworks that light up space. For a large chunk of the 235-year-old
holiday, auto racing has been a mainstay fixture for summer holiday entertainment
also. Lightning shooting into the sky and thunder on the track, what could be
better? This Saturday night, the Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville will
light the fuse on the thunderous machines of the Tulsa based “Oil Capital
Racing Series.” Saturday night will mark the first time the series has competed
on the 3/8 mile semi-banked oval this season. “We have had some good runs
(races) at Mid-America over the years” said OCRS president Barry Grabel. “Kenny Gariss (promoter) is as big a sprint car fan as they come and running a
show at his track is always fun for the both of us.” Grabel added: “We fell
victim to rain last year on Independence Day weekend but based on the forecast
for this weekend, it looks like the only water we will get this time is from
the concession stands and the water trucks. We would like to see everyone pack
the stands and enjoy what should be an entertaining show.
A new
point leader has emerged after last Saturday’s event at Lawton Speedway.
Tulsa’s Sean McClelland capitalized on misfortunes by last weeks point leader
Whit “Gasman” Gastineau and Owasso’s Matt Sherrill (second in points going into
the Lawton event. Sherrell was caught up in an accident in the B Feature trying
to qualify for the main event and the Gasman was involved in an opening lap
tangle in the A Feature that would send the 2011 four time feature winner off on
a hook.McClelland did what he had
to do and garnered a flock of points with his second place finish behind winner
Kyle Cobb. Cobb’s win was his
second consecutive at Lawton. The lead is a slim one at best with McClelland’s
total of 655 just 21 markers more than the Gasman’s 634. Sherrell hangs tough
at 588 points. Stillwell’s Rafe Essary lurks behind Sherrell by a mere 17
points.
This
Saturday night’s OCRS sprint car program is the only event scheduled at the
Mid-America Speedway facility in 2011. Located just two miles south of the
Kansas/Oklahoma state line and just a half-mile west off Highway 169,
Mid-America Speedway is just short of an hours drive from Tulsa. Both OCRS and
Mid-America Speedway invite race fans from all areas to come spend a night of
listening to thunder on the racetrack and to witness lightening speeds created
by the men and women who dare to risk themselves for a shot of glory. After the
races, Mid-America Speedway will conduct a 4th of July Fireworks
display that will entertain everyone in attendance.
