OCRS Sprint Cars Set Dead Aim On Lawton Speedway Saturday Night!

John Lemon

OCRS Public Relations

Tulsa Oklahoma (June 21, 2011)- As Glen Frey once sang: “The heat is on”. The temps have risen, air conditioning units are stressed, and the southwestern section of Oklahoma is hot as the Mojave dessert. With all the heat that is transcending the Sooner landscape, one specific entity is running hotter than ever: The sprint cars of the “Oil Capital Racing Series.” This Saturday night, the OCRS sprinters bring their heat seeking missiles to Lanny and Beverly Edwards’ Lawton Speedway for their fourth ever appearance at the quarter mile bullring. OCRS began the 2011 season at Lawton on April 16th where Kyle Cobb reigned supreme as he took down 39 other challengers to earn his first career OCRS victory. In another first, Cobb wore Goodyear rubber that night which made the Akron, Ohio tire manufacture’s series debut a successful one right out of the box. In all the events where teams were allowed to compete with other tire brands to deplete previous inventory, Goodyear went to victory lane every time.

Packing some serious heat coming into the Lawton event are Whit Gastineau and Sean McClelland as a fierce rivalry between the two talented drivers has developed since the 2011 season began. Other than Cobb’s season opener surprise, Gastineau has triumphed on four occasions while McClelland has toped the field twice. The ongoing war between these two competitors have left race fans on their edge of their seats at each tour stop as they have blitzed around the tracks with remarkable precision. Just seven races into the season, it remains to be seen as to who will step up and add their name to this battle of feature winners. Mike Goodman has been close on occasions. At Outlaw Motor Speedway, Goodman had a radiator hose let loose on the last lap allowing McClelland to steal the win and last Saturday, he was in position to get his first win of 2011 when a bleeder valve failed taking him out of contention.

Matt Sherrell has quietly stuck his nose in between the Gastineau and McClelland battles by sitting second in championship points. Having spent five of the seven events contested working his way into A feature starts via B Feature runs, Sherrell has been making a habit of producing results the hard way. After three runs in a row buried deep in A feature fields, Sherrell broke that string last weekend by qualifying for the main event straight from heat race qualifying action. He earned his second runner-up finish (and fourth top three finish) of 2011. Sherrell is the only driver to have finished in the top ten in all seven main events. Based on his consistency, Sherrell is expected to roll into victory lane very soon as he set his sights set on “Lanny’s House”

Some of Lawton Speedway’s top pilots are expected to defend their home turf against the OCRS invaders including T.J. Herrell of Wichita Falls, Tx; Joe Bob Lee of Cache Okla. and Gary Owens of Pauls Valley, Okla. This event will be the last OCRS tour stop in Lawton for the 2011 racing season. Spectator gates open at 6:00pm with racing getting under way at 8:00pm. Track phone is: (580) 355-6417. The website is: www.lawtonspeedway.com

Track directions:

Take Interstate 44 to Lee Blvd. Go west on Lee to Sheridan Road. Then turn south and go 1 1/2 miles to the track.

From the south, exit Highway 36, Faxon exit. Go North on Sheridan Road approx 5 miles to the track.

Additional information on the OCRS series can be viewed at: www.ocrsracing.com

Will be a great show !

Its my understanding that all OCRS races schedule at lawton Speedway is still an open tire rule ( Lawton Speedway tire rules apply as well as Goodyear) as per Lanny.

Not goning to make his local guys have to buy tires for special events. I admire his decicion, these guys are here weekly supporting the track and shouldnt have to spend $800. + for a couple of races. jmo

Good luck to all, see ya there.

I'm sorry to say that the Day 'n' Night Racing Team #4am of Mike Goodman will not be racing this weekend as his youngest son , Avery will be playing in the Little leauge World Series in Nebraska... so we will be back for next weeks action at South Coffeyville. Good luck to all teams

Yes, it should be a great event as the best champ sprints in the region will be on hand to tackle the red clay bullring.

There is an interesting tidbit that I have learned myself this year. Here are a couple of facts about the Goodyear tire plant in Lawton that caught my attention.

***************************

History
Goodyear-Lawton broke ground in June 1977, and the plant cured its first tire in February 1979. Since then, it has produced more than 500 million tires for world markets. Major expansions took place in 1983, 1987, 1988, 1995 and 2002. This last expansion has enablethe plant to produce large-size, high-value-added tires and increased its capacity for radial light truck tire
production. The plant’s total floor space area is 2.5 million square feet, or 56 acres under roof.

Community Involvement
The plant and its team members are extensively involved in community activities. Goodyear associates in 2009 contributed a record $692,000 to the Lawton-Ft. Sill United Way, an amount that represents 40 percent of the community’s goal. Goodyear associates represent one of the largest volunteer blood donor groups each year with the Oklahoma Blood Institute. The plant supports many other civic and charitable organizations throughout the year.

*******************

With this kind of community investment and company achievements, its a wonder as to how Goodyear isnt the track tire of Lawton Speedway.

1i , Spare you the visual displeasure, got'em back at the dry cleaners gettin all the added starch taken out, told them extra starch on my jeans the other day and dammit if the Ol Speedo don't stand up alone like cardboard now and with 105 degree weather, wind out of the south at 25mph in the forecast, extra starch on the Speedo is a recipe for chaffin, disasterous consequences and any other negative noun you can think of to add to it. So your prayers have been answered just remember to leave some loot in the offering plate on Sunday for the answered prayer , I am sure the preacher will appreciate that a bunch.

By the way whatever happened to that Cadillac Golf Cart we were gonna build and ride around in, the one with A/C, Tinted Windows with graphics on it saying stay back 50Ft. , with onboard computer/TV and a HiFi Sound System , A Cooler for frosty beverages and Fridge for Snacks , one of those Limo type Carts.

I'm thinkin Sat. at Lawton be a good time to have that , be a bit warm from what I hear. Guess no loot to purchase one , guess I'll just have to settle for a Wayne's Drive Inn Cheeseburger and some Rings and a Jumbo Ice Tea.

Right on,... interesting tidbit......

But, would be way cool if they would contribute or invest into the Lawton Speedway Racing Association point fund.

$692,000 in community involvement ? thats great man, $25,000 involvement with the local race track would be great as well !!......... Might just get Lanny's attention !... maybe u can set it up ?

BTW..... we are happy to run any brand of tire that has a lil tread left on it. . (oh yeah, gotta say thanks to our tire sponsors... the big money teams that leave us a few in the pits after a national race) lol

22bark,

Just another little tidbit, I have talked to Lanny about the RR OCRS SPEC tire, I was not trying to get an exclusive RR tire rule, just be able to run it at Lawton with the existing AR RR or HR RR. I'm not going to repeat his exact words on here but basically it was a very firm NO!!! Now I haven't been to Lawton this season except for OCRS but I know CM sells a few tires down that way so I'm pretty sure there are some guys (guessing 40%) running GDYR on the FRT and LR so it wouldn't take $800+ to change over for everybody. In 2010 GDYR PD out over $5800 in contengency in OCRS on a 3 tire deal, I would have been interested in doing something along those lines at Lawton for 2011 but after the reception I got I don't think so. Now I know this for a fact GDYR Corp has contacted Lanny directly in the last 45/60 days and invited he and Marcie to tour the plant at Lawton to try and arrange some type of deal to help support the SPDY. I don't know if Lanny excepted the invitation or not. To support a local track with $25,000 in point fund for a single class is a very steep hill to climb, not saying it can't be done but in todays economy it's tough, I feel VERY sure Tom Lorence or Dan Hamilton would agree with me on this much!!!! Now maybe you or other racer's at Lawton could talk to Lanny and make some head way. I know as well as anybody how tough times are I see it in Drag Racing, Sports Car, Off-Road & Yes Nascar. I feel quite sure also that my competitors at AR and HR also see alot of the same things, I believe Dan and Tom just like myself support alot of racers in all classes, we do it because we are RACERS just like you guys are and want the sport to keep going and survive !!!

I don't really know all the facts, just stated my opinions, thoughts and what i have heard.

Hey thats great that you support a lot of racers, i'm sure its appreciated.

Don't get me wrong now, OCRS is a great series and the deal with Goodyear for the point fund is aw-some. but you have to be running the series to benefit from their relationship

Sure some guys are running GY's don't know about 40% if so what about the other 60% ?

And then what about the rt, rear ? useless after that, as you was informed by Lanny that its not legal for weekly races.

BTW,.... you will spend more than $800. to change to GY, that is if you want any kind of roll out options.

22bark,

On the OCRS RR if it was a legal tire to run at Lawton along with the AR and HR RR then you could race at OCRS without alot of addional expense. I think your going to have to buy tires no matter what brand to get R/O opinions, so unless your on some kind of deal with AR or HR your buying tires regardless. Last time I bought tires at Smiley's (today) I don't see much difference in price between GDYR or HR ASCS tire, and the AR RR's that I get for some of the racers are in the same price range. Bob Lee runs at Lawton weekly and afew OCRS races he runs GDYR LR and FRTS so he has to buy an AR RR or HR RR for Lawton but that doesn't mean he had to buy $800 worth of GDYR's for stagger options, if he bought tires it was to get new rubber, which he would have to do no matter what brand of tire he runs. Now I know that alot of the OCRS guys have spent over $800 changing over this year but they probably would have spent close to the same amount to replace AR or HR to start the season at least for the front running teams. My point is I don't think Tom or Dan would step up and give Lanny $25,000 in point fund money for a single class (sprints) at Lawton under todays economic conditions, they sell parts also which would make it more feasible for them, I just sell tires so I know I can't do it.

Dude !!! you are missing my point. I am referring to the local / weekly sprints that run at Lawton ! Not trying to get into a pissing match with you !

If.. the GY was a legal RR tire... But it 's NOT ! & most Lawton guys are not running with OCRS !

And if you are a tire dealer and would like to sell 4 GY's for way less than $ 800. as you keep referring to, i might just take you up on that.

Once again most guys running Lawton are not on new tires and buy ONE when needed, NOT 4 for a couple of races !

As i agree with some of your points, your till missing mine.

also, don't know what Tom or Dan or You would or can do, as i never mentioned them, I will leave that up to you to figure.

The $25,000 comment i made was referring to OCRS & GY deal, did'nt expect you or anyone you mentioned to step up. Altho would be cool !

BTW.... not trying to dis anyone, & admire Grable / OCRS, its a good series for OK. racers & fans !
