It has been awhile since I’ve last written a blog so here’s a recap of what has been going on in the last month.

After a few rainouts, the USAC National Sprint Car Series opened its season on April 21 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Not having a ride for the event, my uncle Josh and I went to the race with Charlie Brown from racefanradio.com. We walked around the pits and said hi to familiar faces that we had not seen over the off-season. I talked to several car owners to let them know I was looking for a sprint car ride.

The next weekend I headed back to California one last time before my season in the Midwest gets busy. I drove for Brian Sperry at Silver Dollar Speedway in Northern California in both a non wing and wing sprint car. After the race, we drove seven hours south to make the next showdown in the Central Valley at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California. I finished up the weekend with a pair of top-10 finishes in the wing sprint car with a seventh on Friday and a sixth on Saturday.

When I got back from California, I had to get the asphalt midget ready for Iowa Speedway. I worked on the car each night after work before leaving for Newton, Iowa on Thursday afternoon. The facilities at Iowa Speedway were impressive. It was pretty cool to unload in the same garages that NASCAR and IRL teams use. Saturday’s morning practice was a wash for Team Gurney Racing. We missed hot laps with fuel problems so we had to cross our fingers for qualifying. I ended up 17th quick for the first time on the track and would finish 16th in the feature.

This past weekend, we were able to get the dirt midget back on the track at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana for a race co-sanctioned by USAC and POWRi, and then Kokomo Speedway for an open show on Sunday. We had nothing but problems at Haubstadt. We lost a battery in the heat race running third, and were unable to fire for the semi. The car was fast all night at Kokomo, but we broke something in the front end early in the main event running in the top 10.

This coming week… we are going to test at O’Reilly Raceway Park on Sunday along with Biro Racing, Nine Racing and a few other teams. My father flies into town Sunday afternoon and will be visiting all week. Brian Sperry comes into town Tuesday evening with good friend Mark Lundburg. We will be heading to Anderson to watch the USAC National Sprint car race Wednesday. I will be racing a midget at Kokomo Speedway on Thursday in the Jack Hewitt Classic. On Friday, we’re going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Carb Day before heading out to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the Hoosier Hundred. I will make my official debut at O’Reilly Raceway Park in the 62nd running of the Night Before the 500 on Saturday. I’ll cap off the greatest week in open-wheel racing by going to the 91st Indianapolis 500 with family and friends.

Log on to www.chuckgurney.com for photos and more information. And be sure to stop by the #51 Team Gurney Racing trailer to say hello.

See you at the races,

Chuck Gurney Jr.

Heres a guy that whenever I go by their shop and the doors are open,he is working away on his midget. Or he is delivering messages to USAC Ford Focus driver Chett Gehrke for me. On top of all that he takes the time to write his own blog rather than have some paid PR person do it for him.

Keep up the good work Chuck!
