NWWT preps for an Oregon double

VANCOUVER, Wash. - After losing its last two events to the weather in Washington, the NorthWest Wingless Tour sprint car series, the premier non-wing sprint car tour in the Pacific Northwest, now looks to get back to racing with a pair of events in Oregon this Friday and Saturday.

The non-wing 360 sprint cars will make their the only scheduled appearance of 2011 at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore. on Friday night. Then on Saturday, the NWWT will make its second attempt at running its inaugural event at Coos Bay Speedway, located just minutes from the Oregon coast. The NWWT's first scheduled event at Coos Bay Speedway was rained out on May 22nd last year.

With weather claiming both of the NWWT's events in May, it is ironic that the NWWT's last event at Willamette Speedway in 2010 was also rained out. Mark Nichols of Eagle Creek, Ore. won the lone event completed at the 3/10-mile clay oval last season on July 30th. It was also Nichols' only career NWWT win. Shane Forte' won the other NWWT event run at Willamette Speedway on October 3, 2009.

Assuming the weather does not interfere this time around, the 1/4-mile long Coos Bay Speedway on Saturday will become the sixth different track to run a NorthWest Wingless Tour sprint car event in the tour's short history. Originally a pavement track, the asphalt was covered in dirt in 2007 and has since hosted a variety of dirt track events, including a handful of winged and non-winged sprint car events.

Defending series champion Theo McCarty, who finished second in the season opener at Cottage Grove Speedway on April 30th, leads the series heading into the weekend. The Hillsboro, Ore. driver holds a slim four-point lead over Gaston, Ore.'s Corey Esteban, who finished sixth in the Cottage Grove race. 2009 series champion Kyle Miller, who won at Cottage Grove, currently plans to race in Friday's event at Willamette Speedway.

NWWT to make first Coos Bay Speedway visit on Saturday

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The NorthWest Wingless Tour sprint car series will be running two events in Oregon this weekend. After running at Willamette Speedway on Friday night, the non-wing 360 sprint car tour will make its first appearance at Coos Bay Speedway.

Saturday's show will actually be Coos Bay Speedway's second attempt at hosting the Pacific Northwest's premier non-wing sprint car tour. A show scheduled in May of last year was rained out. Despite being unable to get that 2010 show in, Coos Bay Speedway still wanted to have the NorthWest Wingless Tour sprint car series in 2011 and scheduled two events for this year.

The track, excited to be hosting the NWWT, has been heavily advertising Saturday's show locally in the Coos Bay and North Bend areas, including a radio ad that can currently be heard on the track's website. After Saturday's event, the series is again scheduled to visit on Saturday, August 6th.

Coos Bay Speedway, owned by Chuck Prather and managed by Drake Nelson, is a 1/4-mile, semi-banked dirt oval, located just minutes south from town and a very short drive from the Pacific Ocean. There is also a short drag strip on the same grounds, sitting between the front stretch of the dirt track and the main grandstands.

Coos Bay Speedway was originally a pavement track, but the asphalt was covered with dirt in 2007 and has since hosted a variety of dirt track classes, including on occasion winged and non-winged sprint cars. For those unfamiliar with the track, the pit area is located outside of Turns 1 and 2 and the parking lot for spectators is behind Turns 3 and 4. The entry to the pit area for race teams is behind the back stretch. The spectator grandstands and buildings are situated on the side of a hill that overlooks the track.

Theo McCarty, the defending NWWT champion out of Hillsboro, Ore. holds a four-point lead over Gaston, Ore.'s Corey Esteban going into the weekend's events. At Willamette Speedway on Friday, pit gates open at 4:00 with spectator gates opening at 5:00 with qualifying scheduled for 6:00. Gates at Coos Bay Speedway open at 4:00 on Saturday.
